This is either going to be the greatest or worst Christmas ever. I think I'm gonna have a media fast for the week before and after...If I have to listen to fans fighting over invisible bragging rights for two weeks it's going to take away from my enjoyment of the actual football game. |

Am I the only Eli defender here then? No. Eli Manning suffers from the "I am not sexy" disease. Maybe he needs to wear Wranglers! Otherwise, he's smart, tough, productive and dependent on a good Defense and a healthy O-Line to succeed. Just like every other above average QB in the NFL. |

Plax...He's old and the Giants had a better passing game after he left.
Let's all stick to remembering him for the NFC Championship Win against Green Bay which was his true shining moment as a Giant. (As well as one of Eli's) And lets move on and let some other younger guys take over in the hero dept. I'm personally rooting for Steve Smith to make a comeback before I root for the guy who shit all over the 2008 season with his hold out, suspension and then self inflicted gunshot wound accompanied by inflicting the captain of the defense with a public criminal event in the middle of the season. That kind of shit doesn't deserve a second chance. |

Of all the areas that the Giants need addressing its at linebacker. Nicks is a stud, Smith (assuming he is back) is a stud. Manningham is a great change of pace guy. And on and on.
I am just so happy that we are turning the page and football is back. |

Giants signed undrafted LB Mark Herzlich
He was consider a top 10 draft pick and then he came down with and fought off the Big C. Fully healthy now, maybe he'll make that jump back to a top prospect. Giants need LBs!!! Also...OLine revamp is beginning. Rich Seubert and Shaun O'Hara have been released. Seubert won't be ready to return from injury at the start of the season and O'Hara is recovering also, but probably shot. I could see them calling in Seubert mid year if he rehabs well. |

Am I the only Eli defender here then? No, I'm a big Eli defender. At this stage in his career, his stats are as good as his brother's were at the same stage of his career. Of course, I was really hoping that last season would be the one where Eli went from a quarterback of the verge of greatness to one of the elites and he actually seemed to regress a bit. Some of that was injuries and dropsies in the wide-receiver core but he also made some poor decisions. Apparently Mara said on the radio today they'd talk about bringing Plax back. If he could pick up where he left off, absolutely. Eli to Plax in the back corner of the end zone was money in the bank every time. Once we lost that we began to struggle in the red-zone. I was hoping Ramses Barden would become that guy. -------------------- |

At this stage in his career, his stats are as good as his brother's were at the same stage of his career. Ahem. They aren't really. There's a difference of about 500 more completions and 40 more touchdowns, and that's without the fact that Peyton started on a doormat team and made them Superbowl contenders while Eli had a decent core around him at the outset. I don't cite this comparison as a knock on Eli -- some will argue that Peyton is the greatest QB ever, so even being in the same ballpark is a complement to Eli. I'm not all that down on Eli. But he was awful last season. Sure, the injuries hurt. But he was still awful. That said, there's probably like only five other QBs in the league that I'd rather have (Brees, Brady, Peyton, Rodgers, Rape Ape). -------------------- Batman uses women for sex and tactical advantages.

I'm not all that down on Eli. But he was awful last season. They dropped A LOT of passes on him last season, especially early on in the season. A LOT. A few a game at least. EDIT: And deflected a lot that resulted in interceptions. EDIT: And deflected a lot that resulted in interceptions. Yes, holy shit, I'd almost forgotten that. Eventually Eli started making bad decisions and throwing his own interceptions but there was a period early in the season where almost every one of his interceptions was a deflected ball that should have been caught. And, yeah, I guess the comparison between Eli and Peyton's early careers doesn't hold anymore -------------------- |

All the tipped balls aside, somebody made the solid point of him just making bad decisions with the ball. He gets flustered way too easily for a professional quarterback. It almost seems that every step he takes forward, he ends up taking two back with fumbles or interceptions by throwing the ball where he shouldn't have. THAT'S what pisses me off the most about him. A guy of his pedigree and experience should know when and when not to try and make plays.
I still think a lot of this failure stems from the coaching staff too though. I've had just about all I can take from Kevin "I-got-knocked-the-fuck-out-by-Buddy-Ryan-and-all-I-got-was-this-stupid-mustache" Gilbride. I really wish they would have made more of a push for Charlie Weis. -------------------- They say 'eh' instead of 'what' or 'duh'. That's the mighty power of Canada.

I just saw Eli's slide last year as trying to do too much while the WR's and OL and Defense crashed down around him. He lost Smith, Nicks, Hixon, Boss and they were carting in guys left and right from off the street. The OL was riddled with injuries and the defense collapsed several different games throughout.
All the opponents jammed the run and Eli just buckled under the deluge and started forcing passes etc. As long as he learned from it...it's ok with me. But they need to adjust their personnel so they are younger and more durable. Especially on the OL. |

I wondered if his bad decisions were because of those dropped balls and tipped balls turned into interceptions.

If THAT'S the reason for his bad decisions, he really shouldn't be playing professional football.

QUOTE That said, there's probably like only five other QBs in the league that I'd rather have (Brees, Brady, Peyton, Rodgers, Rape Ape). Exactly. For all of Eli's frustrations, when you start to compare him to other QBs around the league, you realize its kinda nice to have an arguably Top 7 and definite Top 10 quarterback. Everyone who drafts a rookie QB for their future would consider it a success if they turned out like Eli Manning. In a related note, until Philip Rivers wins a Super Bowl for San Diego, I declare the Giants the true longterm winners of that trade. |

Manning, Brees, Brady, Rivers, Rogers are the top 5 in the league, IMO. A full season of what Vick did last year puts him that company too. Eli leads the second tier with guys like Romo etc. -------------------- "I think Greatone is one more JKman talent evaluation or 101 trade proposal away from going on a killing spree."

Let's not forget Eli had more TD passes than anyone not named Brees, Brady, or Peyton Manning.
And he was 5th in total yards. With a patchwork WR corp for a lot of the year. This post has been edited by TheAnaconda: Jul 26 2011, 04:44 PM |

If THAT'S the reason for his bad decisions, he really shouldn't be playing professional football. Well, think about it. He starts lacking confidence in his receivers to do the right thing and he starts rushing his decisions or reaches for a different one to avoid the previous outcomes. In turn he makes bad decisions. -------------------- Behind the Press

You know what else spells bad news? The Giants are currently over the cap and still have to sign UFA's like Kiwanuka, Bradshaw and Steve Smith. That's not good.

Steve Smith might start the season on the PUP list, so he shouldn't be too hard to resign, even if its a short-term deal.
Bradshaw worries me the most because if he leaves we gotta replace him with another free agent back and the pickings are slim. Kiwanuka's worth is determined by what Osi does, and all signs point to him holding out for an extension (which he won't get) or a trade. Edit: Are the Giants still over the cap with the release of O'Hara and Seubert? This post has been edited by TheAnaconda: Jul 26 2011, 04:59 PM |

This is where they squeeze players for restructuring. Normally they would have had the whole summer to fix this. |

Reportedly, Plaxico will decide between the Giants and Steelers....
Rumored offer from Giants is two years, 10.5 million, with 60% being salary and bonuses and the rest in incentives. |

God I really don't want Plax back. Well that means he'll sign with the Giants. -------------------- "I think Greatone is one more JKman talent evaluation or 101 trade proposal away from going on a killing spree."

If they sign him and then is like his old self hauling in catches and racking up the yards and touchdowns, I think I can get over his baggage.
I've been slightly on the yes side of this from the beginning because, while I like the receivers, they are wildly inconsistent. Someone like Plax would add some consistency back there. -------------------- Behind the Press

I want Plax to be ok and find his game again. But I would hate it if he just went back to sleeping late and skipping meetings and getting fined etc.
If he is truly grown up and can be a productive player and teammate then sure...I'd take him back. But doubting that will happen is excusable. I also think meeting with him will provide some closure for the Giants and Plax too. And that is a good thing no matter what happens next. |

You know, though, Coughlin gave him a very, very long leash the super bowl season. The guy barely practiced because he was always "hurt" during the week. And then he'd come in for the game and just dominate. If Coughlin is still of that mindset, it could be OK.
