I just want to point out that this is exact reason why Derek Jeter has no children and is therefore the consummate professional athlete.

/Leeds

(Seriously, though, unless you're like a crazy Jesus-freak like Tim Tebow or only a borderline professional ahtlete involved with a celebrity franchise (Kris Humphries, that dude that knocked up Kendra from Playboy), if you're a professional athlete making good money, why would you possibly want to get married and have chidlren during the prime of your career? It's just stupid. Either way, thanks a lot, Joba, for ruining my endless supply of Kenny Powers jokes. I look forward to watching you in the Mexican League in ten years under the nickname El Flamo Gordo.)

Edit: "Knickname" would be something like Yellow Thunder.

Daily news was reporting that he had lost a "life-threatening" amount of blood because of the injury. Geez.

Yanks signed Jack Cust to a minor league deal. Decent insurance if Ibanez continues to blow monkey cock.

Because Cust does not blow monkey cock?

In the role the Yankees are looking for? Not really. .379 OBP and a .441 SLG% against righties the last 3 seasons.

I just snorted. Jack Cust provides about as much depth to the Yankees outfield as I do.

Pineda on the 15-Day DL with shoulder tendinitis so Sweaty Freddy gets the 5th spot in the rotation for now. Also, Cesar Cabral has an elbow fracture which gives Clay Rapada the 2nd lefty in the bullpen spot.

Maybe signing Pettite wasn't such a bad idea?

Pettitte has no direct effect on this. Besides, he is a low-risk/high reward depth signing anyway.

Depth was my point. Do you think this is the only pitcher that could go down w/an injury? What happens if they lose 2 pitchers during the same stretch this season?

Obviously Paul. I thought you were trying to make a specific point with the Pineda injury and not a general "depth is good, injuries bad" post.

Man, reading some of the articles today on the Pineda injury and a lot of these idiots are calling the trade a bust already because of this. BEFORE OPENING DAY.

This is why I don't read them.

I agree, not fair yet. But Montero might be the top hitting prospect in the sport, or close to it. Not totally unreasonable for people to be concerned with a hard throwing pitch who came in overweight, who can barely break 90mph, and who is now injured (though slightly).

EDIT: This isn't like hockey, where you give him time to adapt to his new team, system, whatever. The guy was throwing 97, and now can't reach 91. Troublesome.

Either way, it's a concern.

Let's just agree that it sucks and thank the good lord for DEPTH.

Has Hughes pitched well this spring?

Also, so it's Sabathia, Kuroda, Nova, Hughes, Freddy?

Hughes has pitched very well this spring. Showed up in shape, instead of 15 pounds overweight like last year, and his fastball has reached 93-94 consistently.

13.1 IP 11 H 2 BB 8 K 2.03 ERA 0.98 WHIP

And yeah, thats the rotation for now.

I think I read yesterday that he had shoulder soreness since the first few workouts of camp but never told anyone because he felt pressure to not let the Yankees down.

But yeah, either way its a concern. Lets see how the 10 days of rest does.

There are several other middle infielders in camp and it seems everytime I tune into a Yankee game I see one of the other middle infielders thowing away a pivot throw. I realize it's a small sample size since I've only watched parts of 4 or 5 games and it's likely just a coincidence but the other middle infielders are not impressive.

Yankees traded relief prospect George Kontos to the Giants for backup catcher Chris Stewart. They also sent Cervelli down to AAA. I liked Kontos. sad.gif

Plenty more where he came from!
Making room for Pineda's rehab?

Looks like Stewart has a good % at throwing guys out in his very limited time on the field.

CC goes out and gives up a 4 spot in the first to open the season . huh.gif He's looking better in the 2nd though.
Good thing Sabbathia is fat because that line drive come backer that he knocked down and threw the runner out , could've possibly injured him. Stay hungry CC!

CC really looking like dogshit today. Not his usual command but hey, it's first start of the season.
He's at 92 + pitches. Probably his last inning. Shields is over 100 so he's probably done too. Hope Yanks can get to Rays pen.Don't think that's one of the Rays strengths.

Sweet Lou! My all time favorite Yankee player.

Yanks leave bases loaded in 2nd , 4th and now the 7th. BAD!

When did Wolverine sign w/Rays?

Probably all the Tampa games in FLA and a small group of home games if I had to guess.

Michael Kay just explained that a fouled bunt with two strikes is an out.

Fuck you, Kay. Just ... fuck you.

His intro to the game was torturous...I immediately remembered how long the season is going to be.
