If you read the Latest News box correctly, you would see we have a game against the Senators tonight. I know you think it says you are going to die, but really, there is a game.

We're going to lose this game clearly. And then every other one in the rest of the season, Miss the NHL playoffs, but still get bounced in the first round somehow.
This team sucks. -------------------- |

Biron in net. Doesn't have the flu. I am not sure about the logic here in putting Biron in the net tonight. The Senators are very much in the playoff hunt and are a difficult team to play against. A chance at a 4-point knock would be preferable than starting Lundqvist vs. Chicago. A 2-points that means less in the scheme of things. It is possible that the extra day is being to Lundqvist because he is a little fatigued and could use the extra day? |

Per Andrew Gross:
QUOTE John Scott is in the lineup tonight as is John Mitchell, the question being with Brandon Dubinsky (nose/hand) out, who the other forward will be. Ryan Callahan, who left practice early yesterday to receive treatment on the right foot that kept him out of three games before he returned for Tuesday’s 4-1 loss to the Devils, did not skate this morning - though he rarely participates in optional skates - and he was seen leaving the arena again wearing a walking boot on his right foot. Callahan is still expected to play but if he can’t Stu Bickel might be moved up to forward as well. A line of Mitchell, Scott and Bickell. So awkward. I don't think one of these guys would make the Oilers or Blue Jackets roster, but here are all three of them at once, playing for a team that's trying to hang onto first in the division/conference/league. Yep, don't call any Hartford players up who might be better than these pylons. Can't have that. Is Tortorella worried Avery tainted everyone in Hartford and they need proper quarantine and decontamination? -------------------- RIP Ass Dan, 1981-2010.

Right now they can field a team and haven't designated anyone on the IR, so the exception is moot. |

Perhaps, but it sounds like Callahan shouldn't be (and might not be) playing. And if that's the case, they really could burn one of those call ups now, especially since this player would not have to be sent back unless they wanted to since the Rangers aren't carrying a maximum roster. Isn't there a certain date after which there's no call up penalties? April 1? Start of the playoffs? I remember in past seasons, there'd be one day where teams would call up like 4-6 players at once. Maybe something about eligibility. -------------------- RIP Ass Dan, 1981-2010.

I mean, there's also the fact that the Whale is attempting to go on a playoff run themselves, so the organization as a whole isn't trying to completely cherry pick the organization.
Oh I know, maybe we can bring up Andreas Thuresson and his whopping 18 minor league points. There's always Andre Deveaux too, he worked out well up here. |

JAM should play 3rd line minutes to be effective. Newbury could slot in on the 4th line. Zucc shouldn't be playing 5 minutes a night he won't be effective.

He's also -5 and has 111 penalty minutes, so that might have something to do with it... |

Newbury leads the Whale in scoring right now, we're going to take him out of there during a playoff run so he can sit on the bench and play 5 minutes a night? You have to think about these players beyond the bubble of "I don't like Scott because he ruined my trade deadline day" |

You have to think about these players beyond the bubble of "I don't like Scott because he ruined my trade deadline day" Kris Newbury has played in the NHL before. He's a tweener. He can slot in on the 4th line and be a checking forward. There's a reason he's played 18 games with the Rangers the past 2 years had only 1 assist but 59 penalty minutes. JAM I think deserves a chance with this team if there's an injury on the 3rd line. He's a 20 year old center with more upside than a 29 year old Newbury who is a "fighter" -------------------- |

Newbury, from a business perspective, putting up 50 plus points in the AHL during a playoff push staying put makes more sense than sitting on the bench for 55 minutes a night up here. Not to mention the fact that he's somehow put up those number while racking up 111 penalty minutes, which means he's fighting, which is exactly what we're trying to get away from. That leads us to this kid JAM. Which is fine, THAT'S ONE OPTION. People are talking like there's this little treasure trove of players waiting to be scooped up by the Rangers to magically plug holes. There's one viable option, and he's not guaranteed to be any better than what's up here. |

I mean, there's also the fact that the Whale is attempting to go on a playoff run themselves Who cares? It's a developmental team in a developmental league funded by their parent organizations. It's the NHL's bullpen. It's a business, The whale has coaches owners and a fanbase as well. Pete - you don't remember all of the fucking crying that used to go on over this in years past? -------------------- |

SATS, you're disregarding the entire premise of the minor leagues. They're there to serve the major leagues. Sure, local fans get involved, get to see some live sports on a cheap ticket, I'm not saying the parent orgs. should have no regard at all for their particular situations, but if the Rangers need players, the Rangers need players. That is ultimately what Hartford is there for.
Besides, the Calder Cup, while a nice treat for fans of the team, is almost always a byproduct of a team loaded with career minor leaguers. Look through the rosters of all the championship teams. Career minor leaguers. The 2010-2011 champion Hershey Bears were carried by Keith Aucoin, never drafted, 33 years old, played a grand total of 88 NHL games over a dozen seasons. Their next leading scorer was a name Ranger fans might remember, Alexandre Giroux. 29 years old. Played all of 48 NHL games since being drafted in 1999. You're pissing into the wind here. If the Rangers need players, they take players. -------------------- RIP Ass Dan, 1981-2010.

Yep, and it was silly then and it's silly now. To reiterate, one should not have the same expectations when being a fan of a minor league team. Your team may be totally thrown off the rails if your parent teams needs players. That's why your team is there in the first place. It's not independently operated, as it surely couldn't stay in business for a month with sub-5K attendances on 10 dollar tickets. -------------------- RIP Ass Dan, 1981-2010.

They have to close off the upper bowl so it doesn't look embarrassing. I mean, sure, it's nice to have a team in the system go on a run, but I really, really hope that the Rangers are not making personnel decisions for their major-league club based on pumping up the Whale's bottom line. No I get the minor leagues, but my argument is also the fact that you hear coaches, talking heads, GMs talk all the time about rushing players, it making more sense for players to spend time ON THE ICE in the minors than on the bench up here. You're also kind of not thinking of the business end if you don't think there's kind of an agreement not to completely leave the club in a lurch or just bastardize the team completely. There's one viable option to replace Dubinsky or Cally. ONE. and the kid is 20 years old so maybe the club thinks he's better suited to actually get ice time down there than play 5 minutes a night up here. So what, they call up JAM. Then they still have at least 2 players on the ice that you continually beat up, so what exactly got solved? Oh yeah, and then that kid is not only playing 5 minutes a night, he's playing next to 2 "pylons" so a lot of good that does. |

When I say business, I mean big picture of the organization as a whole. Some guys might not be ready, some guys might not fit into the system, some guys might be Sean Avery. Some guys might be better suited to get actual ice time instead of eating up a few minutes a night.
There's a lot more at stake than just 'I don't like player A, let's take player D from the minors and use him instead" It's really easy for us to just consider plucking any old thing out of the minors, have you ever stopped to think that maybe there's a reason they are still down there? I trust Torts when it comes to moves like this, and I trust Sather when it comes to anything other than Free Agency. I think Scott was brought in for a very specific reason, and you're seeing that reason now with players having tiny stupid ailments, and when Dubi and Cally come back, you'll have him plugging in holes so guys like Prust and Boyle can have nights off. And then you won't see him again. |

Oh yeah, and then that kid is not only playing 5 minutes a night, he's playing next to 2 "pylons" so a lot of good that does. So there's no possibility for the call up to look decent and create offensive chances, something Mitchell, Scott and Bickel rarely do, and get more ice time or even replace one of them? Hell, I'd give that a 50/50 shot of happening. People also make the argument, "but they only play 5-10 minutes so it's not like they're important either way," but that's also a problem! They only play 5-10 minutes because they stink. Which on a team that's looking more tired and banged up by the day, is creating a drain on your better players. Yes, I do think Zuccarello and Newbury would prove to be FAR more useful than John Scott and Stu Bickel at forward. edit: Also, let's not pretend Scott was vetted by Tortorella and fits neatly in his complex equation for a winning team. He said to the press yesterday that he's out of shape and in fact it's hard for him to fit in right now. -------------------- RIP Ass Dan, 1981-2010.

I guarantee you he's a gametime and Cally is skating during warmups. How do you call up a guy that quickly?? |

I can already see the comments now "Well Cally shouldn't be playing and is being rushed back!" He has a bruised ankle. Nothing's broken and he's not doing any damage by playing on it. He's the captain of this team.
We're not talking about him having a concussion or a broken bone in his foot. |

If the organization thinks that Bickel and Scott are better options than Newbury and French guy, in terms of the competitiveness of the team that they put on the ice, as weird as that may seem to the fans, OK. You initially were arguing that the business advantages of Newbury helping the Whale on their postseason run should be a factor in the decision to call him up. -------------------- Y'all laying up, doing shit. I shouldn't have lead with it admittedly HOWEVER I also think it's naive to think the organization as a whole doesn't say things like "Hey, Newbury is leading that team in points right now, but hasn't done much up here in the past, so for the sake of their little playoff run, he probably makes more sense to keep down there than up here." It does nothing but help the franchise if that team can kind of somewhat self sustain a bit. Everything is a business decision. Players like Newbury helping the baby club succeed also helps give some of those youngins more experience...There's a lot to think about outside of "ARGH I HATE THIS GUY, NEWBURY'S LIGHTING IT UP DOWN THERE BRING HIM UP!!!' He's the captain of this team. We're not talking about him having a concussion or a broken bone in his foot. He got injured and missed a few games, and while missing those games barely skated and wore a boot off the ice. All of a sudden he comes back for the Devils game, looks like a shadow of himself and gets bounced around, and hey, he's back to not practicing, wearing the boot, and might be out of the lineup again. This doesn't sound like a player who's either being rushed or rushing himself? And the Rangers better not call up anyone from their minor league affiliate to help deal with their injuries, tiredness and lack of roster depth. They might be having a Bake Sale in Hartford this week and calling up a player or two would be like pissing all over their cupcakes! But seriously, the Rangers are banged up, look tired, and are playing defensemen as forwards and crappy forwards as forwards. Call some people up! That's what teams do in these situations. -------------------- RIP Ass Dan, 1981-2010.

This is supposed to be a solid team with the possibility of making a deep playoff run and yet it is uing borderline NHL tlent to get through the final games? Seriously, why not give Zooka a chance on at least the pathetic PP?
