I believe that he's Jewish, but he's not like the owner of the company who has a kosher fridge, has a Rabbi come in and conduct prayer in one of the conference rooms, doesn't wear a yarmulke, etc. So basically, he doesn't practice his religion like the rest do.

Kind of like how my husband is Catholic but ate meat during Lent.

As more and more details come to light, the Kafkaesque absurdity of this situation just increases.

We just received another email, too. One of my co-workers (we share a space here) turns around and says, 'They're not even going to be here. Fuck that, I'm bringing in bread.'

Even when my in-laws still kept a Kosher kitchen, they had relatives who wouldn't eat at their house because it wasn't Kosher enough.

Oddly enough, this also touches on why I have a problem with the workplace restriction -- at some point, it becomes less about faith/tradition and more about control. And I don't say that singling out a particular faith, just using the situation in the thread to make my point.

To wit, when I first met these same relatives, I was introduced by my middle name so as not to blow my cover. Again, I'm probably the only Jew named Christopher that you'll ever meet.

My family ate tons of Matzah and we're as Jewish as Charles Barkley.

In other news, I enjoy comparing myself to Charles Barkley. I imagine I'm as good at water skiing as Charles Barkley, I speak Hindi as fluently as Charles Barkley and I believe I could kick Charles Barkley's ass in a game of Jordan v. Bird or Arch Rivals.

Hmm. Considering that my family growing up was pretty much non-religious, I'd have to say more - but it's kind of relative. I think that it was a bigger issue when we first started dating. Her father (who is about as religious as I am) decided to get all serious about it when I started dating Maya. Her mother was raised in an Orthodox family, which actually turned her OFF of organized religion. It's funny, because like what I think that you are seeing, my father-in-law's side of their family (the Israelis) are pretty darned secular; my mother-in-law's family, however, is more religious that the average I'd say.

Which is partially why I assume he may be able to beat me in it. On one hand it would be fun to play him as him, on the other hand I get the impression beating Charles Barkley at NBA Jam as Charles Barkley is a good way to be punched by Charles Barkley.

I'm always fascinated by topics like this. Mostly because I'm not Catholic, my husband is - and it presented a huge issue while we were planning our wedding. I've always wondered how couples of the same faith celebrate holidays if one side of the family is a little more strict than the others.

You should consider an exodus to another job.

The more I think about this rule, the angrier I get. The matzo is symbolic of the plight of the Jews and their escape from the confines of slavery. "To honor this, all our employees must abide by the conditions we set. Failure to abide will result in discipline."

Fenway Park, in Boston, is a lyric little bandbox of a ballpark. Everything is painted green and seems in curiously sharp focus, like the inside of an old-fashioned peeping-type Easter egg. It was built in 1912 and rebuilt in 1934, and offers, as do most Boston artifacts, a compromise between Man's Euclidean determinations and Nature's beguiling irregularities. - John Updike

"Lo, and there were some among them that pled with Moses. "The Pharoah, though cruel, does provide for us many amenities, such as health insurance and an ample 401k retirement plan. Not to mention three weeks of paid vacation from our labors." And Moses did smite them and pronounce them to be as dumb as an ass. "Yahweh provides! Look upon his bounty! And by the way, I'm addicted to matzoh with butter now. I used to eat it as a kid, and I haven't had it since. The production department has had matzohs out, and various spreads - butter, cream cheese, jelly, peanut butter. And every day I've gone up to get some with butter. Damnit.
