No word on who is in goal tonight or if Stepan will play.

Gaborik can tie his career high in goals with 1 tonight
Lundqvist can reach 40 wins
Callahan can reach 30 goals

With a Washington win and a Florida loss the Capitals clinch the Southeast and we would play Florida in the first round
If both win the Panthers win the division and Ottawa wins we play Washington
If both win and Ottawa loses we play Ottawa
If everyone involved wins or loses we play Washington

I think. I'm hungover.

Go Rangers!

Happy hockey day! All 30 teams in action from 1pm and going to about 1am. Gotta few bottles of wine (yeah, beer would fit better but beer makes me fat as fuck), burgers, snacks, etc. Most of the games only mean minor things for positioning, but still.

And the highlight of the day will hopefully be the Rangers winning the Presidents' Trophy.

The games I have an eye on:

1:00 - CHI @ DET
3:00 - OTT @ NJD
4:00 - PHI @ PIT
6:30 - WSH @ NYR
7:30 - CAR @ FLA*
10:00 - EDM @ VAN*
10:30 - LAK @ SAN

*only matter if Rangers lose

My son's 6th birthday party is from 4:15 to 5:15 at a local YMCA. Planning to throw him, the wife, and the gifts in the car at 5:16 so we can race home and get me settled on the couch by 6:30.

Of course, even the best laid plans fall apart sooner or later. So, I'll probably be watching on DVR about an hour behind live action.

No such thing as a favorable draw in these playoffs.

They all have strengths and weaknesses. You could argue that Ottawa is the worst matchup because they are so quick strike and while they also give up some you never know what can happen if a goalie gets hot. The NYR have issues when it comes to playing from behind.

Florida is a fairly balanced team but if I was to declare a pretender I might be inclined to call Florida it. You neutralize Weiss and I think Versteeg and I remember them not having much. But they do have a goalie who can get hot.

Washington is a wildcard. I have no idea who they are at this point. OV seems to have found his game again. Who knows what Semin will do. Their goaltenders are dropping like flies. I know nothing about the kid behind Nevirth. I guess we will probably see him tonight.

So if you are asking to pick poisons, probably I would like to pass on Ottawa and the other two look to be a rung below on paper but even then. I think you gotta treat them all with respect and I am not going to get ahead of myself on any of these match ups.

Whoever it is, I would like to dispatch them quickly though. A feat easier said then done.

Florida's weakness: Goaltending. We all know Theodore, but Clemmensen can be tough to beat sometimes. Also, no OT and shootouts to beat the Panthers. They keep coming at you and keep the games tight. Defense is skilled. The Panthers have two lines to worry about:

Weiss line: They remind me of the Hlavac-Nedved-Dvorak line. It is magical. The passes are sick and they are slippery. Versteeg has not been as good since coming back from injury, but obviously you can't give him a scoring chance. Weiss and Fleischmann are dangerous, but they tend to make the extra pass that the Rangers will easily turn into counter attacks.

Goc line: Samuelsson can still score and still has a wicked shot. Goc is a pain in the ass smart player that is good on the forecheck and good on the backcheck. Bergenheim is one of the fastest skaters in the league and he has non-stop energy. Rangers D can't be fooled.

PP: Very dangerous. They have an issue with converting on the PP, but for some reason this team finds it easy to get the puck in the zone and keep it there for long stretches, thus tiring out the opposition's PK. Garrison is dangerous. Campbell is dangerous.

Panthers play with a lot of grit and passion. If the Rangers underestimate them it will only bring trouble. The Caps are a morally unstable team with a weak defense.

You really are insufferable when it comes to this whiners shit. And this is coming from probably the most annoying person on the board most of the time. Good god there isn't a league fucking conspiracy forget about the penguins and just get pumped for the mother fucking new york rangers

I'm not the guy who keeps posting what others say hours, sometimes days before, just to try to have some meaningless argument.

Fuckin' aye right! I can understand not going balls to the wall in Pittsburgh the other night, but look at what happened anyway - spanked 5-2 and several players banged up. Playing hard would have been somehow worse??

I am also sick of losing to the Caps in the playoffs going back 25 years, so put those fuckers on notice starting tonight.

Uh, Rangers beat the Caps in 5 games in the 2nd round series in 1994.

Also, it's evident (to me, at least) that the game against the Pitts the other night was a letdown game for the Rangers. The effort just wasn't there. Not after the high of winning the game before. And honestly, I can't blame them. I didn't really care that they lost and I forgot about that game immediately afterwards. Something I don't usually do after a loss to the Pitts. That game was like a filler comic that falls in the middle of an epic story arc. It just didn't matter; and the Pitts needed it more than the Rangers. Tonight's game matters for both teams.

Crowd sounds pumped. Unless that was generic crowd noise inserted by NBC in their intros, and it might've been. Still, I hope it's a party atmosphere there tonight. The Presidents' Trophy isn't what you dream of, but it's a great accomplishment to achieve on the way there.
