And while I would like him to sign with the Rangers, I never said he absolutely should. But if he doesn't, the team would be right to be unhappy with him. This all has to do with NHL hockey and NHL hockey only. Kreider is not a bad kid if he doesn't want to sign with the Rangers this year, and I would appreciate if you didn't put words in my mouth. But this does make him a difficult prospect. And for the record, I also never said he should have signed over the weekend, either. Or today, or whatever. I am arguing against a perspective out there that seems to say if Kreider doesn't sign with the Rangers this season, then hey, good for him, the Rangers shouldn't be upset with this. That seems too easy going. I'm misunderstanding you, then, sorry about that. The whole "owes them in a hockey sense" thing is just something I couldn't wrap my head around. They had Gary Bettman call his name. That's it. I don't mean to say that I think the Rangers as an organization shouldn't be put out. I guess I get the attitude fans could have too; but I'm just not that worried about it. It was just a vibe I felt I was getting from you, Leeds and HDH in particular. -------------------- |

Kreider should drop everything to sign with the Rangers right now. I'm not sure how to defend him otherwise. Um, ok. Look, I don't think there's any agreement to be had here. Pete, my bad for wrapping you in with other people, but this is basically how I ended up arguing about this. Apparently if Kreider doesn't hop on a plane to sign whatever the Rangers give him, he's indefensible. -------------------- |

One other aspect...
The whole world knew Kreider was a non-starter for trade talks. His non inclusion was a possible reason Sather wasn't able to come close to finding a middle ground with Columbus. This also would say something to me as a prospect that the organization has not only draft rights on me, but a true loyalty to me as a player. I might have a touch of an obligation to jump in and help when they wanted me to. (and yes we can say that CBJ had no intention of truly negotiating, but if you say yes to kreider it might have made a trade more palatable to the fan base.) -------------------- Maybe I get what you're saying, not that your argument is coherent in the least. - Brian Leeds

So does all of this stop if he signs tomorrow? Considering he is a 4 hour drive or a 45 minute flight from NY right now I don't see the absolute must sign by today urgency that some people do.

Apparently if Kreider doesn't hop on a plane to sign whatever the Rangers give him, he's indefensible. Please, then. Defend him. Explain to me how he helps his professional career by not becoming a professional. Does he make more money? Does he extend his longevity in his career? The only rational explanation is that he might not want to be a Ranger. In which case, guess what, I'm a Rangers fan. Saturday he won the title, yesterday was Easter, Muno said he had some BC shit to do today, but by the end of the day tomorrow he should either have signed the contract or told the Rangers he's not playing for them this season. Hell, the Rangers are doing him a big favor by burning one of his years of entry level contract lockdown on what could be as little as 4 games. Do them a favor and let them know how they're setting their post-season roster ASAP. Sure. The bit I highlighted in your post is the main reason I'm a little stunned he hasn't signed, because this is certainly a gift opportunity to burn off a year for almost nothing, so either they're offering crummy terms, he's fucking bushed, or he's a little slow. And the "do them a favor" bit certainly makes more sense in relation to the whole job metaphor - always better to be on good terms that way than bad. That's also why I'm not terribly concerned, because either he's doing some stuff he wants to get done first and building up some energy, or he's rock stupid. Either way, I'm not in a rush to force him down. Edit: The other thing that bothered me, Pete, which I probably conflated with other stuff and why I wasn't on base with where you were coming from, was the whole "he's going to make millions to do something we would do for free" angle, which never sits well with me. He doesn't want to jump into the most physical tournament he could possibly play in on the heels of another tourney? He wants to be a professional hockey player. Are you trying to suggest that a college hockey season is more grueling than an NHL season? He's not that far removed in age from Michael del Zotto or Derek Stepan. You don't see those guys opting out of the postseason because it's too physical for them. QUOTE He doesn't like the terms being offered by Sather and the Rangers? Entry level contracts are fixed under the CBA. They can't pay him more, even if they wanted to. He would be arguing about peanuts against a career that might pay him millions. If this were his reasoning, it's selfish and stupid and hurts him in the long run, financially. QUOTE He's finishing out his career by attending a parade tomorrow like he always wanted to? Parades? College parades? Really? This isn't that far from the "blowing off the NHL for beer pong" line of argument. QUOTE He wants to sleep off his celebration of winning the NCAA tourney? Aside from everything mentioned above, you're talking college hockey versus professional hockey. I love college hockey. But no one cares. QUOTE He's trying to line up favorable insurance in case he blows out an ACL in the playoffs and is never the same again? Are you say that he'll be more insurable several months from now against this week? QUOTE Unless he comes out and says he doesn't want to be a Ranger, I don't particularly give a shit. This is what kills me. How do you root for the team and not give a shit? You want them to win, right? Well, all signs and reports suggest that this kid could help the team during the postseason. So if the Rangers have a chance, EVEN SLIGHTLY, to improve themselves this week, you don't really give a shit if it happens? "Meh. I don't want them to put out the best possible team they can this week. It's just the playoffs. Kreider's got the right to go to parades. There's always next year." QUOTE I didn't expect to see him this year The President of the New York Rangers expected to see him. Why didn't you? Why not? Why wouldn't you criticize someone that turns down a rare opportunity for reasons that don't seem justifiable? Jesus christ. The "don't panic!" brigade has gotten worse around here than the doom squad. Thats only because the doom squad was wrong and had to shut up. How would you guys use Kreider to start out? I'm thinking 4th line at ES and some PP time on the 2nd unit. Maybe some PK time, where his speed would be an advantage, depending on the game situation. Hopefully he works himself up from there. -------------------- "I think Greatone is one more JKman talent evaluation or 101 trade proposal away from going on a killing spree."

Saying the doom squad was wrong seems presumptuous, unless it was only about getting the 1 seed. If they lose in 6 to Ottawa, scoring like 12 goals total, wouldn't that confirm their fears? I don't think that will happen, but that would embody everything people worried about.
Anyway, I think Kreider should get time with the 3rd line, putting him on the 4th line helps neither him nor the Rangers. He needs to play with some guys who can, at the very least, draw attention from defenders and move the puck a bit. Have him play with Stepan or Anisimov or Dubinsky. Mitchell/Rupp/Prust won't help him nor could they keep up with him. |

Nothing close to official. Just a BC blog reporting "sources" saying he'll forego senior year. Jerry York has been saying the same thing for over a day now. -------------------- I can come to terms with the senseless violence, I understand that bad things happen to good people and that God doesn't intercede in mortal affairs in the way we might want him to, but what I don't understand is why he dyed his hair red. Doesn't the Joker have green hair? What, was Sally's Beauty Supply out of Electric Lizard Manic Panic or something?

Jesus christ. The "don't panic!" brigade has gotten worse around here than the doom squad. Thats only because the doom squad was wrong and had to shut up. I don't think that's happened, but regardless, if the Rangers got bounced in 5 games and scored 10 goals do you think myself, JK, KoD, ultimatesteve and a couple others who are worried about the team's depth and scoring will be all like "LOLZ WE TOLD YOU!!"? Meanwhile, in the one good game against a playoff opponent the Rangers have played in a while, a thread that should have been celebratory since we're all rooting for the same team was half full of "HAHA! Dur, I guess they don't have a problem against playoff teams!!" and "LOLOL POPGUN OFFENSE?!" Based on 1 period of hockey. Great. Just everyone stop trolling and insulting. Keep debating, keep getting your point across, stop trying to irritate people. I don't enjoy banning anyone, but I'm quite committed to doing it until things change. -------------------- RIP Ass Dan, 1981-2010.

Show me where this happened because I must be having short term memory loss from that thread. And I'm not being sarcastic. Even after they clinched the worst that happened was me posting two(TWO!) quotes from those who said the #1 seed was gone. And if you dont think ultimate steve, jk, KOD and yourself wouldnt be pounding your chests if the Team Negative portion of this debate(separate from the doomsday shit) turned out to be right in the playoffs you are high. Am I the only legitimately concerned this place has jumped the shark? This thread jumped the eagle a few pages back. I remember it being discussed once before but I cant remember if the 4 callup minimum still applies in the playoffs until the Whales season is over. I'd sure like to see Erixon in over Bickel. -------------------- "I think Greatone is one more JKman talent evaluation or 101 trade proposal away from going on a killing spree."

He wants to be a professional hockey player. Are you trying to suggest that a college hockey season is more grueling than an NHL season? He's not that far removed in age from Michael del Zotto or Derek Stepan. You don't see those guys opting out of the postseason because it's too physical for them. Dont mis-represent what he said. Del Zotto and Stepan didnt play a full college hockey season and then a full Hockey East and NCAA tourney, win the title and then 5 days later turn pro in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Unfortunately because it would take a perfect storm of having a player both winning the Frozen Four and being a top prospect and having a postseason team with a roster that could use him, there is no recent history that I can find for a player that accomplished this. But Abdelkader completed a full season of college hockey, lost in the regional finals and then, five days later, went pro. And Abdelkader didn't even make the postseason roster and spent all of the following season in the AHL, foregoing his senior year in the process. -------------------- Batman uses women for sex and tactical advantages.

Aside from some trolling, that was a heated but informative discussion about an interesting topic on a day when we had absolutely nothing else to talk about. -------------------- Y'all laying up, doing shit. So in essence what you are saying is that Chris Kreider is a big baby if he is a little hesitant, if he even is because no one knows, to do something physically that no college player has likely ever done before? -------------------- "I think Greatone is one more JKman talent evaluation or 101 trade proposal away from going on a killing spree."

He wasnt standing out but he is obviously quicker on his skates and has a little offense to his game. I fear Bickel will get exposed in a series against Ottawa. But hey, if one of our biggest worries is our 6th defenseman and who gets the nod on the 4th line we are in a good spot to start the postseason. -------------------- "I think Greatone is one more JKman talent evaluation or 101 trade proposal away from going on a killing spree."

It would be two more games more than Justin Abdelkader did. Of course, I didn't factor in how much fatigue is caused by hugging and throwing your gloves into the air. -------------------- Batman uses women for sex and tactical advantages.

The major difference Leeds is that Abdelkader wasnt guaranteed a spot in the lineup, and in the end never played a game for Detroit in the playoffs. Whereas Kreider knows going in he is not on the bubble for the playoff roster after the season he just played. This is all speculation on your part on why a kid hasnt signed a pro deal less than 3 days after winning a college championship.
I feel like this is a debate if he ends up not signing. Not before we know and for what reasons. -------------------- "I think Greatone is one more JKman talent evaluation or 101 trade proposal away from going on a killing spree."

Did he sign yet? I'm still baffled by the fact that a 6-4 230-some-odd pound 21 year old kid called the best skater in the world not playing professional hockey wouldn't want to suit up for th New York Rangers tomorrow.
