It isn't any worse than the Pens/Flyers, tbh.

I actually think we'd have an easier time against the Devils, though. Philly's speed scares me-- they weren't nearly that fast during the regular season. They are as fast or faster than Ottawa, and just as rough. The difference lies in Bryzgalov, but even then it only helps if the Rangers can learn to stop this cycling bullshit and instead put pucks towards the net. Bryz is so shaky that anything you throw at him has a chance of going in-- so that's how you beat him and that team.

These days Fatso is spending an awful amount of time flopping like hungry seal at feeding time at zoo. He is getting by more on experience than actual talent. He is never seems to be square at the shooter. On just about every shot he goes horizontally down prematurely. You hold puck a split second and you will have him on his side giving you practically half of the upper net for you to score at will.

Rinne is in Bryzgalov meltdown mode right now. He was soooo good against Detroit, but everything sent his way is turning into a horrid rebound.

His defense is also evaporating.

5-3 in this game. Kind of nuts.

I don't know if Nashville is playing this poorly or if Phoenix is this good. But considering Nashville pounded Detroit, to see them down 2-0 possibly to Phoenix is kind of shocking.

That we could end up with Phoenix or LA in the Finals is mind-boggling.

LA not so much. I, and a fair amount of people actually had them beating Vancouver. They were one of the better teams in the West the last month of the season and had/has the talent to be a contender.

Phoenix? I mean if it were in a bigger market, they'd be an amazing story. People SHOULD feel great for them because it's a ready made Disney movie. A group of castoffs and hasbeen's coming together to be a contender.

Doan, a guy who has been there forever finally getting his shot.
Vrbata coming out of nowhere.
Mike Smith a guy no one heard of becoming arguably a top 5 goalie this year.
Yandle, the best d-man no one has heard of.
Boedker: Some dutch guy no one ever heard of all of a sudden turning into a clutch playoff performer.

Vrbata came out of nowhere in 2007 when he joined the Coyotes. After that breakout year he signed a big contract with the Lightning, his numbers declined heavily and they bought him out of his contract. He played only 18 games in 2008-09 and went to Europe for the rest of the year. HE signed with the Yotes the following season and promptly got his numbers back up. He really isn't a surprise.

Smith previously played for the Lightning. I'm fairly certain that Henrik Lundqvist on the Lightning would be considered a mediocre goalie too.

Phoenix is a good story regardless of the size of the market they play in. How great would a Rangers-Coyotes final be? Master versus apprentice.

Don't forget Ray Whitney, best NHLer no one has ever heard of ten years running. One of the few players that made the Hurricanes worth watching after the cup year. 75 years old, slow-footed, and barely over 5 feet tall, Ray Whitney somehow scored his 1000th point this season. I think he's the only original San Jose Shark still in the league.

Mike Smith is not a top-5 NHL goalie. Can you stop exaggerating and sensationalizing every event that happens in hockey?

Between Bryzgalov's fall after leaving Phoenix and Mike Smith suddenly looking like a very good goalie I'd love to know what's in the water there. There's a reason they got him on the cheap.

Typically when a guy gets Vezina consideration that means he is a top goalie in the league no?

Goals against of those who played 50 or more games? 4th (If you want to go put the Blues goalies here even though they didn't play 50 games? Fine 6th)
Wins: 4th
Save Percentage: 3rd

Could you maybe, I don't know, check some stats before you start trying to insult me? For a guy that is so quick to jump on people for not providing facts, you seem to have quite the inability to follow your own advice.

What is that you try to say to me and others?

Oh yeah.

Smith may not be a top-5 goalie, but he is playing like one right now and that is all that matters.

It's not the water, its the goaltending coach. Sean Burke.

Mike Smith nominated for the Vezina? News to me.

And no, simply being nominated for a Vezina is not evidence of being a top-5 goalie in the NHL. Especially since this is his first better than average season of his mediocre career.

I guess that means a guy like Manny Ramirez is still a top 5 baseball player in your eyes. Sure, he retired from the game for a year, is currently sitting out for 50 games for steroids, is almost 40 and can't hardly move, but hey, the guy used to crush the ball and has one of the better lifetime averages amongst current players.

Mike Smith had better stats than almost any goalie not named Jonathan Quick and Henrik Lundvist this year. He re-affirmed this by completely shutting down one of the better offenses in hockey in the Chicago Blackhawks. He got his team in the 2nd round when guys like Thomas, Fleury, Luongo/Schneider failed and he right now is looking better than Rinne.

I know this is hard because in your eyes this never happens, but you're on the end of a losing argument here my friend.

I think there's a huge gap between "Top 5 in stats this year" and "Top 5 in the NHL." Mike Smith played excellently this year, but it's his single superlative year in a mediocre career. I think I would take Lundqvist, Quick, Rinne, Howard, and someone from either the Thomas/Rask or the Luongo/Schneider pair for the "top 5" before I took Mike Smith.

Does that mean you would consider Jeff Francouer a solid starting outfielder, since he had one good season last year in a startlingly below-average career?

What does the Manny Ramirez example have anything to do with this argument?

Mike Smith is playing well this year. He's statistically a top five goalie this year. Adam Graves scored 52 goals in 93-94. It's the body of work as a whole that counts, not the statistical outlier.

Yes Mike Smith is playing well this season, but lets not get ahead of ourselves here. This is the first season of his career that he's cracked the .920 Save % barrier.

Right now? Based on his performance? Give me Smith over guys like Howard and Rinne. With the way he's played this year, he's a top 5 goalie.

Smith to me got jobbed out of a Vezina nomination. Virtually every stat was better than Rinne except for wins.

He and Claude Giroux are also the two best players thus far in the postseason.

He also said that Shane Doan "finally" got his postseason chance (47 playoffs games played, made playoffs last three seasons), Radim Vrbata "came out of nowhere" (670+ NHL games played), Keith Yandle (2011 all-star) is a guy that "no one has heard of" and Mikkel Boedker (#8 pick with three career playoff goals) is another unknown who is suddenly a clutch performer.

Every season features a well coached surprise team that advances to the second or third round. There is nothing that surprising here, other than the fact that the Western Conference sucks balls this season.
