The most storied franchise in hockey. The Montreal Canadiens. How on earth could they be interviewing a mediocre hockeymind in Pierre McGuire? Has anyone seen this guy's resume? This guy is barely eligible to become an NHL coach. He coached 67 NHL games. He then coached in the ECHL for one year. He was an assistant all his life.

This is the guy that called Toskala a world class goalie when he was traded to Toronto. Frankly, why is this guy even a popular hockey analyst? He was not even an amateur player. Yet, he was interviewed for a GM job position? And not just any GM job position but it's the Montreal Canadiens GM job positioning. How can this team be taken seriously? I can't take it seriously. What a joke! rolleyes.gif

He won two Stanley Cups as an assistant with Pittsburgh, working under Bob Johnson and Scotty Bowman. He's worked in almost every facet of hockey organization: management, coaching, scouting. He has significant ties to the Montreal area. And as arguably the most prominent media personality in the sport, he knows just about every player in the league, not just from an evaluation level but personally.

They pay him to draw attention to the game, which he does through a hyperbolic use of language to describe plays/players. But in thirty years of watching hockey, no one to me has more enthusiasm for the professional game than he does, particularly at the developmental level (almost to a creepy extent). Pierre's resume is probably better than John Davidson, who is showing success in St. Louis. I have no idea if he'd work out, but I think he's qualified enough to interview.

If the guy was that good, why didn't any team give him a chance to be a coach even at the AHL level? The guy is not qualified to be a GM. He knows every player? Congratulations. He is probably not the only one. Davidson is not a GM either.

I never said he was good, I said that he worked under two of the all-time best. And the second part isn't a logical conclusion. First off, how do you even know that he wasn't offered THOUSANDS of coaching jobs and turned each one down? Or that he even wanted to coach in the first place. Maybe after his last job in the NHL, or a bad experience at the minor level, he realized that broadcasting was his true calling. Besides, he wouldn't be hired to coach the Canadians anyway.

You're right. Broadcasters are usually underqualified to run hockey teams. Hey, where did Florida General Manager Dale Tallon get his start prior to managing. Can you distinguish what made him a qualified GM where Pierre McGwire is not?

QUOTE
Davidson is not a GM either.

Good point. He's the boss of the general manager.

Tallon was assistant GM before becoming a GM and played for over 10 years. The guy was an All-Star in the NHL too.

Davidson probably has the financial knowledge to become president of HO. That makes him qualified for that because that's what you need.

I can't hear the name without thinking about the time when me and my friends were 5 years old and whizzed off the roof onto the AC compressor fan. Pee Air.

Hah, I didn't have a problem with them interviewing McGuire in the first place. He seems like a more logical hire than the guy they got, actually.

Of all the things you can make fun of the Habs for, you chose their interview of Pierre McGuire. That's like choosing to make fun of A-Rod for dipping his french fries in mayonnaise instead of ketchup.

I would have gone for Risebrough, but Bergerin can give something really new to this team. Why not? Thumbs up.

I didn't either, and I like the Habs. I just never saw the point in this thread to begin with.
