Yes, the Rangers have 2 more call ups PLUS they can make emergency call ups if there are injuries. The rules are just there so you don't gut your AHL team. You still need to be able to bring up people just in case.

The Flyers and Devils both seem faster (except for maybe Semin and Ovi) and more potent on offense. If we don't trust them against a team that seemingly wants to only score 2 goals, then we're going to give him 14 minutes against a Flyers team averaging nearly 5 goals per game?

EDIT: Unless of injury to one of the starting 6 and even then I think they would have to play Eminger before they can use an emergency call up.

Brian Burke was the first on Monday to raise the annual argument for abolishing the post-deadline rule that limits NHL teams to just four American Hockey League call-ups.

The rule only applies while the AHL affiliate team is in play and lifts as soon as their season ends, but it remains an ongoing concern for the National Hockey League.

Burke and the majority of NHL teams would happily promote their prospects for short-term duty after the trade deadline if the rule was elminated, while contending teams would utilize the flexibility to keep their roster filled.

Instead, aside from emergency recalls which are strictly policed but happen frequently, teams burn a call-up for every AHL-NHL transaction made from this point on.

This rule was collectively bargained, however sources say the NHL has repeatedly asked the NHLPA to eliminate it, and further, the league has a letter of agreement from 2005, obliging the PA to negotiate in good faith, the removal of the 4-call up rule.

Sources say the Players' Association has been willing to negotiate an amendment, but only if the league agrees to a quid pro quo.

It's believed the NHLPA is concerned with its veteran players, perhaps losing ice time to call-ups late in the year, along with the optics for the fans who pay to watch NHL players. Plus, there's an adverse financial effect players who are in the NHL at the deadline would feel if they were openly shuttled back and forth over the remainder of the season.

It's possible the issue will be revisited with newly appointed NHLPA executive director Don Fehr in the near future. If not, the matter will become one of many items tackled in negotiations of the next CBA.

As for the AHL call ups, it seems to me it punishes the strong organizations that are in the playoffs on both levels. I understand why they don't want teams to strip mine affiliates in the playoffs, but isn't the goal to win Stanley and not the Calder Cup?

Mike Sauer if he overcomes concussion symptoms is not untradeable. We just wouldnt get a very big return.

If he overcomes his concussion symptoms he's probably worht keeping. Won't be able to command a high salary and would allow us to trade a more lucrative defensive asset. Assuming he's healthy enough to play and plays well.

That's the good thing about him.

I think he won't be traded, because if he can remain healthy, he will be a solid second pair defenseman who will never be paid much. McDonagh, Del Z, and even Erixon could command high salaries in the near future. Since he has no offense, Sauer never will. That's nice to know that we will never have to pay him much more than a third pair guy.

Could this be a harbinger of rolling the top three with a more equal distribution of TOI or a strategy to provide Boyle and Cally som respite in order to save them from wearing out.

I don't know how much a few minutes in TOI really makes but I never thought of that as a reason, although it makes sense.

At Puck Daddy, Sean Leahy writes of what will happen if the Rangers game tomorrow, at 12:30PM, goes late and runs into the pre-race coverage of the Kentucky Derby which starts at 4PM.

“Viewers will be able to catch the entire first overtime on NBC. A second overtime will air on NBC “depending upon timing and circumstances,” according to the network. Once NBC switches to pre-race coverage, NBC Sports Network will carry the remainder of the game.”
