Coyotes up 2-0, they've actually been the better team today.

Kings aren't immortal, after all.

To "save the league" they need to adopt rules such as forcing players to stay on their feat (apparently bob gainey and dennis potvin suggested it), telling forwards they can't block shots, making pads smaller, or even creating a "key' like you see in basketball.

They may well be full of it, but this at least is the topic of conversation going on in NHL media circles on there

Is this really what they talk about on NHL radio? It's this simple.. Goaltending is better than it ever was in the history of the league. End of story.

The position has evolved so, so, so much in the past 15 years. Blame the Allaire brothers who have created a generation of absolutely ridiculous goaltenders.. Not the Rangers, not shotblocking.

Also.. Bob Gainey doesn't get a professional opinion anymore.

I agree they're more athletic and bigger too (just like every position). However, it doesn't hurt their pads are also a lot bigger than 20 years ago.

The two things that I notice immediately is just how much more beefy the chest and shoulders are protected and the glove is A LOT bigger.

It's all relative though. 20 years ago Tom Barasso wasnt seeing anywhere near the shot velocity Hank sees purely on composite stick use alone. Forget strength and athleticism. That chest protector seen on Lundqvist actually needs to be that thick.

A listener wrote in about the key, which was immediately dismissed by the hosts of the show. Bob Gainey suggested a rule against shot blocking a couple of years ago, tsn and nhl home ice have been running with it this postseason saying the "blockey" is ruining the game, slowing it down, destroying what the lockout was trying to acheive. Lots of blame on the rangers (and now Washington) followed by "but good on them" for making it this far. They went on to say that a rule against blocking shots is almost impossible to enforce, unless the rule states that you must stay on your feet, and then postulated forbidding forwards from going down to block shots. I think it was Modano who came on and mentioned that pads have gotten harder and stronger, but still isn't something that's easy to do. He also said that guys have always blocked shots, Washington and the Rangers just seem to have more guys who are good at the technique.

Kings are in scramble mode right now. They can't solve the Coyotes' defense and are making numerous mistakes in their own zone.

The Desert Dogs are definitely Rangers West Lite. How many time have they had it in front of the net, but nobody home to hammer the rebound, nor at the point to keep up the pressure...

I thought it was more leg on leg. I didn't see knee on knee, and he was definitely going in with his shoulder. I think knee on knee is only when the leg is extended to hit the other guys knee.

Man, i wish you could hear what those guys said to Brown. The guy will be a target next season.

You know, driving home I heard the Phoenix guys say these were the best refs they had all series. Boy, can they eat those words.

The officials absolutely ruined what was one of the better games in the entire postseason.

1) That was no penalty on Doughty
2) Doughty should have gotten either an extra minor or a 10 minute misconduct for his temper tantrum.
3) An LA King chipped the puck into the stands that did not get called
4) The refs didn't blow the play dead when Mike Smith covered the puck and LA knocked the puck AND his glove out of his hand.
5) Doughty was not offsides on a play where a Coyote was without a stick.
6) That play by Brown was absolutely a penalty. Forget the kneeing which to me was at least a minor. His shoulder looked to be aiming for his head as well.
7) It's quite possible there was a hand pass on the winning goal.

They turned what was a great game into a complete sham where both teams were routinely getting screwed. I normally don't condone fans throwing stuff on a playing surface but I'm pretty sure I would have joined in on it tonight. Absolute utter crap.

I give the Phoenix team a ton of credit to even shake their hands, particularly Brown's.

I cannot even begin to imagine what our forum and Ranger fans as a whole would be like if half of those things happened in an overtime.

1. Technically it was, they just did not call it right away.
2. Agreed
3. Agreed
4. There is no rule in the book that play has to be stopped. The refs were correct on this one.
5. He wasn't but those get missed all the time. No biggie
6. I thought it was a good clean hit, after the whistle but a good hit.
7. The King missed it, no hand pass.

Ha, was just watching that myself. Too awkward to finish it.

I don't think Brown's hit itself was bad in the sense that he didn't lead with his knee, but it was probably avoidable in the sense that it was after the whistle. Looked like he was trying to veer off though, so who knows. The Coyotes don't really have a right to bitch given Smith's slash earlier in the series. And Hanzal giving Brown shit in the handshake line is comical given that Hanzal got a game for boarding Brown himself, a hit that was clearly worse than anything Brown did. I do feel a little bad for Shane Doan, seems like he was on the wrong end of some bad calls this series.

EDIT: I've edited this post about 5 times now. Past noon, and I still sound like an idiot.

Justin Bourne with a great play by play on why the Brown hit doesn't warrant a suspension and the non-call wasn't egregious (while acknowledging that a call wouldn't have been absurd either): http://blogs.thescore.com/nhl/2012/05/23/b...ichal-roszival/

It's a disgrace that the Devils organization ever won a single Cup, much less three of them.

The Kings better not fucking lose to the Devils.

Are you talking about Bondy? He's the only one who comes across as pissy in that article.

Do you all think that we are biased in favor of the Ranger style of play? I am amazed every time I read an article about how the rest of the league and fans think the Rangers employ the latest "this will kill the NHL" style of play. That stuff about outlawing shot blocking was amazing, that respectable hockey minds like the XM crew were actually giving it favorable consideration.

The bad news is that the Rangers are gone, and with them considerable local interest in hockey. The good news is that the Rangers are gone, and now the playoffs should get considerably more telegenic - assuming that anyone was actually watching.

Yeah Bondy. It's weird because all year long everyone was praising the Rangers for their style of play and once the playoffs came it was all about how it was ruining the game.

It's a disgrace that the Devils organization ever won a single Cup, much less three of them.

You're right, it's a disgrace that one of the best-managed teams of the last 20 years won three championships. Yes, they clutched and grabbed to a title in 1995, and it was boring hockey. But did you watch the Rangers at all this postseason? More than a few of their games would have put me to sleep had I not been a Rangers fan. If they had won the Cup this year playing the "block every shot and eke out a 2-1 victory" game, would you have called it a disgrace?

Also, people have said it here before, but I'll reiterate: the Devils pretty much quit playing the boring trap game after 1995. Yeah, they still built their team around Brodeur and the defense, but do you know who led the NHL in goals in 2001 and finished second in goals scored in 2000? Why, the New Jersey Devils! What a stupid boring trap team they must have been with their best in the league offense!

I hate the Devils just as much as any good American should, but let's not pretend this is Team al-Qaeda that won three championships. The pre-lockout Devils were fantastically managed and deserved their titles.
