If a store wants to sell me a Coke the size of a small zoo, and I want to buy it and drink it I should be able to.

QUOTE
New York City officials are proposing banning the sale of large-size sodas and other sugary beverages at restaurants and food carts.

"More than half of NYC adults (58%) are overweight or obese," Mayor Michael Bloomberg tweeted Thursday. "We're doing something about it."

The ban would outlaw such drinks larger than 16 ounces at restaurants, food carts and any other establishments that receive letter grades for food service. It would not apply to grocery stores.

It's sickening. Does he think the city is populated by 5 yr olds? I'd like to put a ban on Mayor Mike banning sh#t. The f#ck?!

And just for spite, I'm drinking Coca Cola out of a 20 oz bottle as we speak. Diabetes be damned! punch.gif

I honest to god can't understand how someone can drink more than 12 ounces of soda at a time. I have trouble finishing a can, let alone a 20 oz bottle. Shit makes me feel shit to my stomach. So much sugar.

Problem is those large drinks are usually at least 75% ice. And fuck Bloomberg. He got all pissy when Giuliani suggested staying on an extra couple of months and now he's made sure we'll NEVER get rid of him. Hypocrite.

I think it sucks but mainly because if there are no refills I will just buy the largest one possible and share with my husband. It's cheaper that way.

It'll take me most of the day to drink it. By the time I get to the end, it will be warm--and probably a little flat. I can't drink that much all at once.

If I want to pay my waiter 50 dollars to get his little coke despenser thing and literally shoot it in my mouth for an hour, I should be able to do so.

We're not talking about drugs here, it's soda. I should be able to drink as much as I want and people who shouldn't be drinking it need to learn self control.

What are you complaining about? It's so much better to have people throwing their cigarette butts all over the sidewalk. I also love having to wade through clouds of smoke every time you walk into and out of a building.

Sometimes I think the best thing to come out of the smoking ban was the bitterness/complaints about the smoking ban from smokers.

And the notion that this is something that doesn't affect others is false. We all pay for it with higher insurance premiums due to the rising cost of treating the obese and the diabetic.

Hey, no one put a gun to your head and made you eat in a restaurant that permitted smoking. Don't scream about your freedom to drink a Mega Big Gulp while you're OK with dictating the behavior of private citizens in private establishments.

Again, my drinking soda has no ill health effects on anyone around me. Before he went after smokers and with the current economy, tell me what kinds of jobs we'd give waiters, waitresses, hostesses, chefs and anyone else in the industry who didn't want to be subjected to second hand smoke and then we can start comparing the two.

Point : Maybe no immediate effect, however to Taki's point, obesity costs everyone who pays an insurance premium.

Counterpoint: So we should ban all athletics and recreational exercise? Because those folks who get injured are causing me to pay more in premiums! I'm looking at you, Mr. ACL whose doctor is a doctor to the sorta-stars. emot-argh.gif

The workplace safety angle is pretty good, better counter-argument than a lot of people will muster up. They're both cramps on personal liberty, though. I don't give a shit about the smoking ban, and I don't really care about a large soda ban either, but I don't see why changing the size of a soda serving is a grievous blow to personal freedom.

If I wanted to go all out here, I'd observe that the overall gains from athletics and exercise outweighs the injury-based losses. I'm the weirdo exception with terrible joints, but most athletic types are in better shape than your average joes and bring premiums down overall.

Of course, I made that argument to Tex somewhere back in 2008, I think.

I dont agree with a ban. I think that is stupid.

What I do believe in is the calorie posting that exists at restaurants here in CA. Lets people know what they are ingesting. I would like this to expand with more detail. I want people to have a better understanding of what their food is. People should know where their meat is coming from, what is in it. They should know where their vegetables are coming from. I want it posted with the menu and I want fast food to also include information on their wrappers, cups, and napkins. As people become educated, the market will drive or it won't.

I think that when people are repulsed by some of the shit that they are consuming it will force some of these chains to up the quality of what they are using.

I don't think it is reasonable to regulate people's intake.

Yes, I think they are incredibly enlightening, but I do believe there are studies that show it does not impact what people order in eating establishments.

This is kinda what sparked my major weight loss journey. I used to go through McDonalds for a 2 for $3 breakfast sandwich special. At the time it was McMuffin's, which are 300 calories each. So I rationalized and said "well, two of them are 600 calories, kinda 1/3 of what I should be eating during the day, and breakfast is 1/3 of the meals I'll be eating, so not so bad".

Then one day they changed the special to two Sausage McGriddles. HOLY FUCK. Two of them were 1300 calories or something like that. I literally drove past the window and have not eaten a single fast food item (save for coffee) since December 2009.

I went through a similar process. Did you find that, after the initial adjustment, you didn't need to eat as much to feel full? I look back on the way that I used to eat when I was younger and wonder sometimes how I wasn't even fatter than I was.

I'm all for the calorie postings and the label improvements, but stay the fuck out of my personal life. As I get older I've become more and more libertarian.

Less obesity may lower my insurance costs, but bigger doesn't bigger government cost more in taxes?

I recently lost 35 pounds and my convenience store still managed to sell 90oz sodas to those that wanted them. Its called PERSONAL CHOICE!

Fuck off, Bloomturd. God, what an arrogant ass. I'm convinced he believes he knows more than the masses.

"Hey! Let's regulate the ignorant!"

"Harumph, Harumph, Harumph!"

You know what, my wife pointed it out to me before I realized it on my own. I think we were at a birthday party at a restaurant with a buffet and I sat down with one plate and she asked if I was going back up and I said (truthfully) that I was full. And then she pointed it out again that Easter, as I cooked the meal and then didn't ever make myself a plate as I was full from the usual sampling that goes on while cooking.

I've been pretty strict recently again leading into summer, and I notice right away that I get that extremely intense, almost sick full feeling much quicker than I used too. Even from consuming a lot of liquids (like seltzer or coffee) and then eating something.

The obesity epidemic and the subsequent cost on health care is a major factor in the economy. Employee headcount reductions don't save the company in payroll expenses, but rather in benefit expenses. Jobs are moved overseas so that companies can get cheaper labor and not have to pay health care expenses for the employees. Health care packages are getting steadily worse at most companies if they're not cut outright. Medicaid is a huge drain on the nations resources. The people on Medicaid are for the most part poor or low-income. Poor and low-income people are less likely to eat more expensive but healthier food and are less likely to have gym memberships or be involved in athletic programs. As a result people from low-income/poor backgrounds are more likely to be obese and stay obese thus costing more money to keep healthy. Tell me again how the building blocks of obesity (sugar, saturated fats, etc.) aren't affecting everyone.

To me the studies are fine. But I don't think the calorie information go far enough. I want people know what they are consuming and if they are choosing to ingest it anyway, thats on them. But I do think that the food consumer should have every right to know what the hell they are putting in their bodies. Any of you know where McDonalds meat comes from and what percentage of the meat is ground up bone, or some other shit? In the spirit of full disclosure.

If people have the education, they are responsible at that point. And there is a good chance that if people begin to stop eating some of what they are pimping then they will have to adjust their menu.

In a special that they showed on HBO about weight loss it was interesting that they determined that calories whether by fat or otherwise count the same on a calorie count. So, if you go to a 1700 calorie diet you will lose weight. If you go down to a 1200, you will lose significant weight. This is something that should be much more aggressively taught to people. And when you count calories and realize that a big soda has 1500 calories in it, you will pause to at least recognize what it is and its effect on you. When you recognize that the pancake has 1200, the soda has 1500, and the fries have 700, you may go for it anyway. But you will be aware that you are ingesting an insane amount of shit in one sitting.

The idea of FORCING a company to sell less of the product that their customer wants is a little concerning to me.

But the idea that you are given a cup that states very clearly that this is 1500 calories and filled with this or that type of crap in it, you may find people opting for less. If they don't? Then stupidity kills and natural selection works.
