Lots of forums have these never-ending threads where people just jot a couple sentences and/or a rating on what they've recently watched, and maybe there are enough people here to make it a worthwhile venture. They're very entertaining and useful threads with good participation. If it flops I'll just unsticky it and let it die.

I'll start off with a few next post..

There Will Be Blood (5/5)
Deep movie. I understood a few religious allegories and I'm sure there were a bunch more that flew right over my head. Daniel Day Lewis makes the whole thing, of course. He's frightening and possessed, as he always is. If someone said he was the greatest actor of all time, I'd have a tough time arguing against it. Great soundtrack, too. Very chilling and suspenseful for a movie where really not much at all happens.

Unforgiven (4.5/5)
I saw parts of it when it first came out but finally watched the whole thing the other night. Very simple story, which was part of the charm. I didn't really feel for Eastwood or Freeman's characters, though. A mysterious past, kind of reluctant killers now, blah blah whatever. Not enough there. Gene Hackman was awesome. He always makes a mean bad guy.

Target Earth (1.5/5)
Creaky 1950's sci-fi that's neither entertaining nor campy-entertaining. Worst looking robots ever. The only fun thing about the movie is lots of 1950's "tough guy" talk, such as, "Will you button your lip you crazy dame?" Lots of that.

No Country for Old Men (5/5)
As if the Coens weren't already the greatest directors of the late 20th/early 21st century, this cements it. It's not a dazzling plot at all, but it's a great story. I love the lack of a soundtrack, it really lent to the wide open and isolated desert atmosphere. In a lot of ways it's "Fargo in the Desert," another crime story involving the quirks of isolated small town folks. Javier Bardem's scenes steal the show.

The Shield seasons 1-4
The first three seasons are brilliant, about as good as crime TV gets. It's not a question of if every character is smeared with shit thanks to their own egos and failings, but how much shit they smear themselves with. But having watched the first few episodes of season 4, it seems like it's all falling apart now and I hope that's not the case. As good an actress as she is, Glenn Close doesn't fit at all, Vic seems more wishy washy now than alpha male, but Dutch and Claudette are still probably the best two characters on the show.

Be Kind Rewind:

Jack Black is conspiracy theorist who lives in a mobile trailer at a junk yard and Mos Def is his best friend who works at a run down VHS video store in Passaic.

The guys somehow ruin the videotapes they are left in charge of and decide to tape their version of the movies and give them to the customers instead. (Business is really really slow)
Their versions are very clever and become a big hit in the neighborhood. The premise includes fighting to save the store from demolition and rallying the city of Passaic to support their cause.

Some of the ideas they use to mimic scenes of movies are funny as hell. And this movie turns out to be really likable in a rated PG kind of way. Jack Black does his usual nutty stuff, Mos Def is almost innocent in his role and Danny Glover plays the crusty old video store owner. The other plus is a soundtrack and story that leans on Fats Waller as a theme throughout.
I thought this would be much lamer than it was, but it came off as almost a fairy tale with modern stylings and language.

I'll use the Netflix rating and give it 3 of 5 stars. "Liked it"

The Banquet (aka Curse of the Black Scorpion) 5/5

A beautifully done adaptation of Hamlet done by Xiaogang Feng. The story doesn't stick too much to the original, but the similarities are there. A very profound, grandoise movie with excellent characters, the key to this being as fantastic as it is lies in the highly stylized way that it's shot. Instead of two people floating through the air in fight scenes (a la Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), they're filmed as more of a bloody dance, with Tan Dun ("Hero," "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon") setting the background with a soundtrack that is possibly his best work to date. Highly Recommended.

The Onion Movie, kind of a Kentucky Fried movie sort of thing but it was pretty funny, especially with Steven Seagal as Cockpuncher.

We've been watching Season 4 of Rescue Me on DVD. We rarely get the chance to catch it on air, so we've just decided to watch each season on DVD as it comes out -- no commercials, and we can do the total Leary Immersion Technique: get through the whole season in a short period of time.

What to say about the show? We just think it's one of the best things on TV.

Its always sunny in Philadelphia- Season 1&2.-(5/5)
Finally bought the DVD's. This show is amazing. I cant believe there isnt tons of talk about this show. Its gotta be the funniest thing out there today. Im gonna have to find more episodes from the next seasons. Its a very dark humor, yet also childish name calling stuff with a little bit of race humor splashed in there. Charlie Day may just be the funniest guy on TV these days. I highly recomend this show.

Glengarry GlenRoss- (4.5/5)
Finally saw it. It was alright. Great cast, and they mix it up a lot by not concentrating soley on one actors talents (I thought this was gonna be Pachino yelling like an ass through-out the movie, yet it wasnt at all). Alec Baldwin totally steals the movie IMO with his short role in the movie. Ed Harris also rules in this film. Never liked Kevin Spacey all that much, but he comes through at the end with some good chops. Of course Jack Lemmon was great also. But the overall lack of anything else besides crying about leads and bullshitting customers made the movie a little dry and boring. Not that I can think of a way to spice up a movie about selling real-estate, but it wasnt ALL that great. Good though.

The Limey- (3.5-4/5)
A movie from 1999 starring Terence Stamp (Yes, General Zod). Stamp plays an ex-con who is on the hunt for answers about his daughters death. He tangles with a few Hollywood gangsters to come up with his main target (with help from good ol Luis Guzman of course). His target winds up being his daughters ex played by Peter Fonda. Blah, blah, blah, it has some great dialog, especially a few remarks by a hitman played by Nicky Katt (Strange days, Way of the Gun, Boiler Room, Planet Terror, Clint from Dazed and Confused...), and DEA head played by Bill Duke (Mac from Predator). Some pretty cool death scenes (no, not gory), and action bits. I enjoyed it. Im sure you can see it on Stars or something, but I bought it.

Walk Hard- (2.5-3/5)
Meh... I love John C Reilly. Hes just always a lovable character. I didnt have any high hopes going into this one, and came away feeling exactly how I thought I would. Has some funny stuff in it. Reilly's role was clearly written to be played by Will Ferrall. The typical nonsensical idiot humor just doesnt totally fit Reilly here. Lots of dick jokes (Reilly plays a singer named Dewey Cox), and songs about sex.. Jokes get stale and then more stale IMO. This one signals the signs that Judd Apatow is clearly running out of steam. Though it has its moments (IMO Tim Meadows of SNL fame, steals the movie with his repetative "not wanting" Dewey to do drugs stuff), I think this one was a flop.

Funny, I got maybe 3 or 4 episodes into Season 4 before I lost interest. All the less interesting parts of the previous seasons seemed to jump to the front, the characters seemed less engaging, and it all felt been-there, done-that.
I loved it before, but I gave up shortly into that season and never went back.

Control:

The movie is based on the book "Touching from a Distance"written by the wife of Ian Curtis lead singer of Joy Division who committed suicide.
i was really looking forward to it. Joy Division, while not my favorite band, has written many of my favorite songs (if that makes any sense). Overall i would say the movie, shot entirely in black and white, gives insight into who Ian Curtis was and why he committed suicide. His battle with epilepsy which began to affect live performances, and his affair and inablility to choose between his wife and mistress. He also began to reject the limelight and killed himself right before Joy Division was going on their first U.S. tour. I only wish they gave more insight to the music and the band in general. Although maybe the distance that was portrayed between Curtis and his bandmates also contributed to his suicide.

It's definitely worth a look even if you don't know who Joy Division is, they have been listed as an influence for many bands like, Nirvana, NIN, Smashing Pumpkins etc.

Been meaning to see this again ever since I read Roger Ebert's article for The Great Movies series he has on his website.

I always had a bit of sympathy for the Eastwood character. It's as if he really wanted to escape the outlaw past, but (like they say in the Godfather) it dragged him back in.
When Gene Hackman says to him at the end, "I'll see you in hell, Munny," you almost expect Eastwood to say in return, "I know."
Session 9
(3.0/5)

A horror movie that's a bit slow moving (the kiss of death for many horror films, in fact). Then again, when David friggin' Caruso is the best actor in your film, being slow moving is the least of your problems.

But still, the flick works on some levels, hence the 3.0 rating. Caruso and co. play asbestos removal specialists in charge of cleaning up an old decrepit mental hospital that's been slated for renovation. As expected, strange things are afoot, paranoia grows, and people start turning on each other. You can see the twist coming at about 45 minutes in, but the scenery and premise are creepy enough to warrant a late night, nothing-else-on-the-other-400-channels viewing.

I felt the same way about Session 9. It really can be scary in parts, especially when the one dude listens to the therapy session tapes and when the other one comes back late at night for the coins in the wall, the acting is good enough, it's got a great set up (asbestos removal crew), but there's just not that much to the movie in the end.

Hello Dolly - WallE inspired me to finally see Hello Dolly, as it was one of the few old musicals I haven't seen. You saw the best numbers in WallE. The dance numbers are clearly the lovechild of Gene Kelly, the director. Which is a good thing for a hour and a half, but not for three hours.

Simply Ballroom - I made it all of a half hour in. Again, it has the director's name written all over it, but I just couldn't take it. Is there any compelling reason for me to turn the DVD back on?

My wife and I love Simply Ballroom - but then again, she's Australian. We just found it a fun and touching film, but you don't get the payoff until much further in than 30 minutes.

We watched another Ozzie film again the other night, The Dish. It's based on the true story of the large satellite dish in Parkes, Australia, that served as the relay for the signal of Armstrong stepping on the moon in 1969. It's a nice, heartwarming story based in fact with some really cute moments like
when the American Amabassador comes into the large town party to celebrate the upcoming landing on the moon -- the mayor had asked the teenagers whose band was the entertainment if they knew the American national anthem, and they said yes; when the Ambassador walked in and the mayor cued them, they started playing the theme to "Hawaii Five-O."
laugh2.gif It's a good flick -- stars Sam Neill and Patrick Warburton.

Until I saw Breach on a flight to Phoenix last summer, The Dish was probably the best in-flight movie that I've seen. Which reminds me...

Breach (4.5 - 5/5): Based on the treason investigation that led to the arrest of Robert Hanssen, I thought that Chris Cooper turned in a career performance as Hanssen. Ryan Phillipe was surprisingly good as the young computer support tech recruited by the FBI to gather evidence against Hanssen. This isn't a Bourne movie by any means - but it's just as tense.

Billy Bathgate, 1991 (3/5)
Bleh. Too quaint and sanitary for a gangster movie set in the 1920s, but it's really more of a romance movie than a gangster film. Nicole Kidman is gorgeous and often naked, Dustin Hoffman is awesome as usual (a far better actor than the overrated Pacino, imo), and Steve Buscemi is around in the background. But the kid who plays Billy Bathgate is awful and looking at his IMDB page, hasn't had a major role since. No surprise. This is a mob movie your mom would like.

A Barrel Full of Dollars, 1971 (2.5/5)
Run of the mill spaghetti western with Klaus Kinski that not only steals the "dollars" line from Sergio Leone's westerns, but also swipes the music box set piece, except this time it's a musical pocket watch. 'S alright, nothing major.

Ecstatic Stigmatic, 1980 (2.5/5)
Avant garde movie made by people in the late 70s/80s NYC art punk scene (who made quite a few movies, actually). 60 minutes of loosely connected religious and sexual imagery over the top of narration from the famous Psychopathia Sexualis, and/or howling coyotes, and/or random noise, and/or jazz. My copy looks like it was eaten by an elephant then shit out and burned to dvd-r, so I can't even tell what's going on half the time, but it's not like I can go down to Best Buy (or anywhere else) and pick up a better copy. Read more about it here if you're interested.

I might as well call this thread "What's on HBO While I Decompress From Life."

Bandidas, 2006
Stars Salma Hayek's breasts and Penelope Cruz's breasts as ... I don't know. They shoot stuff. Penelope Cruz's breasts really don't get enough work here in America.

Crocodile Dundee, 1986
Did you know that Linda Kozlowski eventually married Paul Hogan? I did not know that. Paul Hogan is also a tax cheat. Two thumbs up for the unintentional comedy of 1986, including the breakdancers in the background and the scene where Mick gets jumped by two "thugs" wearing thin leather ties and parachute pants.

Harry Potter and the High-Def TV of Awesomeness, 2008
Seriously, my new TV rules. The fireworks scene gives me an erection. I'm not ashamed to admit that.

Knocked Up, 2007
Yeah, this movie is still funny, even after the 2000th viewing. And despite the fact that the wheels completely fall off in the final 20 minutes. Here's what I find interesting. Everyone considers the movie tainted by the fact that there is no way in hell that hot babe Katherine Heigl goes for Seth Rogan. But if you watch it enough times, and swap in real-life bitch Katherine Heigl for the character she plays, you realize that she's nothing more than a hot psychotic that Seth/Ben is probably too good for. That's what I keep telling myself, anyway. And interesting trivia -- scene-stealer Leslie Mann, who plays Paul Rudd's wife and the preggo's sister, is married to writer/director/owner of Hollywood comedy Judd Apatow.

Laser Mission, 1990 - still easily the most entertaining $2 I've ever spent on a DVD:

Ernest Borgnine is an eastern European "scientist" who can build a "nuclear veppon" with a giant cubic zirc and a laser pointer. Brandon Lee and a woman whose ample breasts are not nearly enough to balance her shrill annoyingness run around Namibia in low-speed chases and gun battles with "Russians." A pair of bumbling Cuban soldiers are intended to provide comic relief, but the whole movie is pretty hilarious.

Hope you like the theme song - Mercenary Man, by David "In Dire Financial Straits" Knopfler - as it feels like it plays on a constant loop in every action scene.

The best part? The entire movie is available on Youtube! Though, if you watched that trailer, you've seen a pretty good summary.

Apparently, this is because it was released into the public domain - can't imagine why!

An interesting point to note is, little time is spend on the laser / nuclear weapon. Alissa and Michael become romantically involved(i.e. superficial love) and at one point have sexual intercourse.

Huh...that is interesting!

Stars Salma Hayek's breasts and Penelope Cruz's breasts as ... I don't know. They shoot stuff. Penelope Cruz's breasts really don't get enough work here in America.

Just read the plot summary...apparently, they spend a significant amount of time in this movie hurling themselves at Steve Zahn, who rebukes them every time.

This may be the most unbelievable movie you listed.

It's a complicated movie teeming with subtle undertones of racism and class structure. Unspoken is the fact that, as Mexican females, social boundaries prevented Zahn's character from forming any intimate bonds with these foreign ladies. Take, for example, the scene where they are dressed as French burlesque dancers and crawling across his naked body. It reads like a treatise on man's struggle in the colonial era torn from the pages of Locke or Hobbes.

This film is so critically important to our understanding of Cold War-era geopolitics and geode-politics that it was released into the public domain to ensure that even the most impoverished among us could learn its critical lessons and apply them to future laser missions.

The Amateurs (3.5-4 out of 5): It stars Jeff Bridges and has a semi-Lebowski feel to it. The lovable loser, Bridges, lives in a small nothing town called Butterface (ha!) and manages to lose his wife and his kid because he is always dreaming of the big plan to make his way in life, but he always fails. He gathers his town friends (and fellow bar flies) for one last ditch effort to live the American dream: make a porn flick. Some very funny moments and only one or two sappy ones thrown in. I was pleasantly surprised. And a good supporting cast, to boot! (Available for rental. I don't believe it is on cable yet).

Fenway Park, in Boston, is a lyric little bandbox of a ballpark. Everything is painted green and seems in curiously sharp focus, like the inside of an old-fashioned peeping-type Easter egg. It was built in 1912 and rebuilt in 1934, and offers, as do most Boston artifacts, a compromise between Man's Euclidean determinations and Nature's beguiling irregularities. - John Updike

"The Twilight Samurai," "Love and Honor," "The Hidden Blade"

The three comprise a very subtle, plodding project by Japanese Director Yoji Yamada to do three feudal-era samurai films, though none are related in plot or character. The first is about a lower-ranked samurai whose wife has died and struggles to take care of his children, the second is about a food-taster that goes blind from fish poison and the transformation in his relationships before and after, and the third is about a samurai that is, well, actually I can't give away much of the plot, but it's my favorite of the three. They are the exact antithesis of Michael Bay films in terms of production, subtlety, and intelligence, and all have interesting takes on the human situation.

Freedomland
(2.5/5)

Not quite as dreadful as Sed's better half would have you believe, but close. Julianne Moore plays a deranged white woman who's son is inadvertantly kidnapped in a carjacking. Samuel L. Muthafuckin' Jackson plays the cop who helps her, while simultaneously trying to prevent a race riot in the Jersey housing project that is his beat.

Moore does a weally nyze joisey ak scent, and Samuel L. is tired of the muthafuckin' carjackers in his muthafuckin town, but the denouemount is fairly predictable (
to paraphrase Walter Sobchak, the bitch did it herself
) and the more fascinating themes of racial double standards, Missing White woman syndrome, and maternal depression are brushed over. Meh, at best.

Bug
(4.0/5)

A nice little study in paranoia. Ashley Judd stars as Agnes, down-on-her-luck hayseed whose husband is coming out of the penn. Her friend introduces her to Peter, a Gulf-war veteran who's got "WEIRDO" stamped all over him. Agnes takes a fancy to the seemingly harmless Peter, and the two hook up (gotta love that suspension of disbelief).

Anyway, a few days into their fling, Peter starts going into these paranoid rants about bugs infesting their bodies. Agnes slowly starts to descend into his madness, with tragic consequences. The story is a little cheesy, but this is one of those acting tour-de-force type films that's worth seeing for the performances alone, and its themes of Folie a Deux and the absurdity of conspiracy theories.

Oh! And speaking of docs, did we discuss the Roman Polanski HBO documentary? Oof, it pissed me off. It discussed his foray into his ALLEGED sexual deviance, the murder of his wife by the Manson clan, etc., but it really seemed like another Hollywood blowjob about a director they refuse to find fault with in any way. Poor Roman, was the theme (at least, to me). Whether or not you agree with my take on it, check it out. Pretty fascinating stuff.

It's called Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired. Now playing at Netflix and on HBO.

Oh, yes, I saw it. Not bad, although I agree that this director really felt for poor old, persecuted Polanski. Yeah, I can see that he may have (arguably) been railroaded, and yes, statutory rape is overblown, and yes, the girl's mother whored her out willingly, but c'mon. He should have known better and kept it in his pants.

In Bruges starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson. I frequently find Colin Farrell annoying but I fucking loved this movie about two hitmen holing up in Bruges (a town in Belgium) following a difficult job. It's a great character piece, very funny, with excellent dialog. It puts me in mind of Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang which is also highly recommended for anyone who hasn't seen it. (4.0/5.0)

Californication. I watched disc I of this Showtime original series starring David Duchovney as a novelist struggling with writer's block, a change of coasts and his unresolved feelings for his ex, with whom he has a child. I really wanted to like this and David Duchovney and the rest of the cast almost pull it off but ultimately I find myself hating the writer of this show as the whole thing is just an excercise in middle aged male fantasy. Lots of nice tits in the first couple of episodes though.

Yankee Doodle Dandy 1942

James Cagney shows some serious singing, acting, and especially dancing chops in this (mostly) faithful biography of broadway legend George M Cohan. Essentially a vehicle for a musical revue of his most popular compositions (such as You're a Grand Old Flag, Over There, and the title track), it's a very entertaining story with a pretty light touch and some great comedic moments. I make a point to watch this one every Independence Day.

Interesting documentary examining the medical birthing industry in the US. Apparently we have a much worse infant mortality rate compared to Europe and Japan, and this film blames the pathologizing of the birth process by doctors in this country.

Chopper- (4/5)-
One of my favorites. From 2000, Eric Bana (Hulk, Munich, Black Hawk Down) plays "Mark Brandon 'Chopper' Read", a convict from Australia. Its based on the said to be true stories of the characters name, who has multiple books out about his wrong doings both in and out of jail. Bana does an excellent job portraying the lovable, yet insane criminal/scumbag. Some real funny and disturbing stuff in this one.

Its been on Stars in the past, so I'd imagine it will be on again soon.
