Listening to them scored you serious art school ass in college. Their collapse was almost blueprint 90s band: record company presses for a hit to capitalize of the novelty of their look, attention on lead singer fractures the band, and after a major tour their drummer kills himself. They have a greatest hits album, but don't get it. They stopped being good as soon as some industry exec told them to look up.

I really completely missed out on this whole genre, save for some interest in the Cocteau Twins passed on to me by my way cooler younger sister. (Apparently, the term "shoegazing" was coined for these groups - to describe the fact that they were too busy staring at their guitar pedals and pouting to look out at the audience.) I'm not sure what I was doing - if I remember correctly, it was catching up on all the Fishbone I missed when they were in their prime, listening to "Dirt" and "Sap" eight million times, and trying my best to be a Pearl Jam/Temple of the Dog poser.

I remember liking some of the stuff that Dean Wareham and Britta Philips put out a few years ago, though, so maybe I'll give that a try.

Speaking of Fishbone, I was cleaning out my CD collection last time I moved and I found a couple of CDs by fellow funk-metal enthusiasts Psychefunkapus. I remember loving them back in the day so I popped them in and, Jesus Krispies, that was some terrible shit. AllMusic gives both of their albums 4 stars which just goes to show that the early 90's were a fucked up bad time in America.

Hey guys, just wanted to let you know that I love this thread and have been looking up some of the music suggested here. I'm loving a lot of the stuff mentioned here (except for the metal, which I'm not into), but bands like The Black Keys and rappers like MF Doom have been really enjoyable for me.

So, thanks. whistle.gif

If you want to check out some shoegazing music, look into the band My Bloody Valentine. They have two main albums, Isn't Anything and Loveless. After the second album, they went on a bit of a hiatus because the songwriter could not handle the pressure of trying to write a follow-up. He is supposed to be working on some tracks now.

Listening to Garbage right now - perhaps one of the few bands (IMO) that did the whole Techno-meets-Rock thing right.

My favorite tracks weren't the hit singles ("stupid girl," "I Think I'm Paranoid"), but the album cuts and no-so-hit singles.

Here are a few:

"The Trick is to keep breathing" - from Garbage 2.0

"Bleed Like Me" - from Bleed Like Me (the harmony coda at the end is breathtaking)

"Cherry Lips - Go Baby Go!" - from Beautiful Garbage (perhaps the best song Madonna never recorded)

I had been listening to a lot of Garbage the past few months due to Rock Band renewing my interest in them. The fact a redhead is involved doesn't hurt either. wink.gif I think The Trick Is To Keep Breathing is my favorite track of theirs. Just a really good song.

I've caught bits of a Live Concert on the RAVE HD channel a bunch lately. I've been watching that channel a lot since I discovered it. It shows a good variety of Live Music Concerts and Festivals in HD 24/7. I've seen stuff from Willie Nelson, Pink Floyd, Tom Petty, Peter Gabriel, Garbage, Fleetwood Mac, Sting, the NY Dolls, Alice Cooper, Finger Eleven, and I've even seen who I think was Apocolyptica on this channel along with many other bands. The only problem I have with the channel is that it tends to show only a handful of concerts over and over again over the course of a month before it mixes things up again. It'd be nice if they had a bit more variety over the course of each month. Hopefully they'll build on that as time goes on.

The channel is 785 on iO Cable.

I just saw the Decemberists live on Tuesday at the Wellmont Theater in Montclair (incidentally the same place I saw Pulp Fiction when I was 16). It was my first time seeing the Decemberists and my first time at that particular venue. The band is phenomenal live. They use a bunch of different instruments like accordion, stand up bass, and I think even a hurdy gurdy. If you like folk infused indie rock, they are an awesome band.

The venue was really nice too. It was an old movie theater so it is ornate and spacious with good acoustics. The only show coming up that I am interested in is Vampire Weekend but it is nice to have a decent smaller place in NJ that some good bands come to.

That was me.

"Twilight of the Thunder God," "With Oden on Our Side," and "Fate of Norns" are all highly recommended if you're looking at Amon Amarth.

More stuff in that vein would be Moonsorrow, Ensiferum, Windir, Falkenbach, Tyr, and Turisas, in order of recommendation.

Thanks to seeing that silly Rhapsody song with the hot chick in the bubble about a million times, been listening to David Bowie's "Low". What a great album! I'm a Bowie fan and have most of his stuff from the 70s, but for some reason this album never made it in, probably because it didn't produce any of his considered hits. For anyone that likes synth-rock bands like The Killers, Interpol, or even Radiohead, or post-punk stuff like Joy Division, check this one out.

Indeed it is. I'm a bit of a Garbage fan. Saw them in concert when I was in college when Version 2.0 was out. Liked them before the concert. Loved them after. But I was not happy with Beautiful Garbage. Didn't seem like themselves. Then they came back with Bleed Like Me, and I was pleasantly surprised. It was much like what they were doing before Beautiful Garbage.

I actually picked up their "greatest hits" album. It's two discs and one of the discs is full of dance remixes of their songs. It's pretty good if you like that sort of thing.

So the real reason I came in this thread. . .And I didn't look back too far, but has anyone gotten the new AC/DC album? Is it as good as their new song leads me to believe?

I'm pissed that I couldn't afford to see them in concert sad.gif

Heard the new AC/DC record, and I like it - like one reviewer wrote, "it sounds like what the Stones would be like if Keith won every argument with Mick."

Yeah, yeah, it's the same old shit we all grew up listening to for nearly four decades, but the one note on the proverbial piano, so to speak, is a very good note.

Remember how every Thanksgiving, you'd look forward to Mom's stuffing? AC/DC is the equivalent of Mom's stuffing - even though it tastes the same every year and, to an outsider who doesn't get it, probably isn't THAT good, it's still feels like home, even though it's the same shit.

Long may they rock, even though angus looks like a tool in that outfit.

I'm stuck on one of my all-time fave one-hit wonders from the 80s:

Don't know why this song makes me so nostalgic. Probably the time in my life that it came out, the Motown/soulish sound, the noirish look to the video, the crappy movie that it came from, something. Poor Dan Hartman, he died a few years later of a brain tumor and AIDS-related complications. sad.gif

That's Robert Townsend (Hollywood Shuffle, sans cheesy 'stache) and Myletki Williamson (Bubba from Forrest Gump) as two of the back-up dancers, BTW. Also, Dan Hartman was white. It's such a travesty how in the 80s they took all this music from white performers, and used black musicians to cover them. White people have soul too, you know.

That movie was so cheesy/crappy that it was good. What a killer soundtrack, too -- the Blasters' "One Bad Stud" is still a fave of mine. And anything with Diane Lane in it......grrr, baby, very Grrr!

Uhhhh, tell me your joking, right? Cuz these guys did the movie version of the song, but the hit single version of the song was done by Dan Hartman. scratch.gif I missed the joke, didn't I? I sorry.

I still love the songs from this film. If the movie's cheesy, the music makes it worth the experience.

Btw, I love the dance moves.

Yes, I know. I was inverting the story of black artists form the 50s getting ripped off by white performers and producers, to ridiculous effect. See what I did there?

Actually, it's all kind of confusing - Hartman released a radio version, which is what I think is in that video. For the movie, though, they apparently used a version sung by Winston Ford, a well-known studio R&B singer.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088194/soundtrack

Also, those guys in the clip didn't do any of the singing, they were just brought in to do the lip synching and the performance for the movie.

The Police: Certifiable
Available only from Best Buy

Great collection documenting one of their last gigs (this particular set is from a show in Buenos Aires). The edition I got cost a mere $19.99 for two DVDs and two CDs.

The audio is superb - the band added a few new wrinkles to the old favorites, which to some degree makes me yearn for a new studio album; their musicianship is still amazingly sharp after a quarter century apart.

The documentary on DVD 2, appropriately entitled "Better than Therapy," documents the reunion from the first rehearsals on. It's pretty interesting to see Sting, Stewart, and Andy at work - at times, they seem to be carefully watching their words, mindful of the fact that their resurrected friendship can come apart at any moment if the old demons of ego, musical differences, and conflicting personalities arise.
One gets the feeling that, indeed, the reunion was a form of therapy for all three.

I caught the end of that on Sirius today. I didn't hear enough to pass judgement on it though. I also heard new Slayer today. Tom's vocals sounded like he had his nuts in a vice. I wasn't too impressed.

Soul music is about my forty-fifth favorite genre of music, roughly, but this is sweet.

oooh. Classic. "Misstra know it all" and "Golden Lady" are pure smooth Stevie. This album holds up very well and I never liked his following records as much as this one.
Pete, there's a ton of great "Soul" out there. Bill Withers has some classics, Curtis Mayfield- Superfly, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, David Ruffin are some of my favorites.

Lucinda Williams' new album "Little Honey". An acquired taste for many, but she kicks ass.
And while her voice and body are falling apart slowly...her band is tight as hell.
This is one of the rockers- "Honey Bee"

She also does a raw version of "It's a Long Way Back" from AC/DC and the amusing "Jailhouse Tears" with Elvis Costello.

Had it on cassette in high school - was a great album to run to. Still is, actually.

Fans of Cheese Rock (I'm looking at you Checky) might want to check out the new album by Shinedown, The Sound of Madness. It's completely by the numbers but I was enjoying it on my way into work this morning in a guilty pleasure sort of way. I'm embarassed to admit that I'm totally hooked on the single "Second Chance" which sounds like something you would hear on Smallville. It's the first track on their MySpace page:

Fenway Park, in Boston, is a lyric little bandbox of a ballpark. Everything is painted green and seems in curiously sharp focus, like the inside of an old-fashioned peeping-type Easter egg. It was built in 1912 and rebuilt in 1934, and offers, as do most Boston artifacts, a compromise between Man's Euclidean determinations and Nature's beguiling irregularities. - John Updike

I love that Guaraldi album! It's one of the few Christmas albums I can tolerate.

Anyone listening to the new Rise Against? I'm loving it!

Wow, I can't believe I'm going admit this but I just listened to this song "Tonite" by this young Swedish pop singer, Lykke Li and I like it. Yeah, it's a kinda gay.gif. She sounds a little like Feist. But she is 1-young, 2-cute, 3-gots a cool name, and 4-Swedish.

Swedish Pop is... and has always been infectious. Komeda is my choice. But the chick in the band looks like she's pushing 40. Not that there's anything wrong with that. naughty.gif
Unfortunately... this video is horrible!
