I know we've discussed early Depeche Mode before, but I'm always amazed to look back. As a kid I thought Dave Gahan was such a badass. In the mid-late 80s that was his persona.

In the early 80s, though:

I could kick the ass of all 3 of those guys at the same time.

I love Depeche Mode. I really like the record they put out with "Dream On" on it about 10 years ago. I dont think a lot of people what a HUGE band they were/are. They did the fucking Rose Bowl. It took Metallica/Guns to do that place.

Me too, but I think that their first album that really struck a chord with me was Black Celebration. It's still one of my favorites. The earlier stuff is a bit hit and miss in my book - Blasphemous Rumours, Master & Servant, Shake The Disease, Everything Counts? Love them. Just Can't Get Enough, People Are People? Not as much.

Lou Reed to Metallica (after performing Sweet Jane at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Anniversary show): Guys, that was great! We should record an album together. I'm Lou Reed.

Metallica: Yeah. Sure. Definitely.

Lou Reed: Seriously. We should do it. I'm Lou Reed.

Metallica: For sure. Call us.

Lou Reed: No. I mean, right now. Let's record an album.

Metallica: Um.

Lou Reed: I got all the gear right here. We can start laying down tracks tonight. I'm Lou Reed.

Metallica: Uh ... Kirk, don't you have that thing with ...

Lou Reed: Guys, I'm Lou Reed. Rock and roll legend. Venus in Furs? White Light, White Heat? Everything on Transformer?

Metallica: Well ...

Lou Reed: Great! Let's get started. James, I want you to play you guitar upside down for now. Lars, you drum as you usually do, except inside of sticks you'll be using celery stalks. Mexican guy -- I'm a bass player too, so I guess you can go home. Now everyone just play the same slow and plodding song for twenty minutes while I do some spoken word over the music.

Speaking of albums that hold up, I was listening to Mellencamp's Scarecrow last night and there's not a bad track on that album.

Meanwhile, the new Wilco album is all over the place but I kinda like it. Except for that song, I Love My Label. That one's fucking annoying.

Same. "All over the place" is a pretty good description. I think they went back to trying a weirder album after going fairly straight-laced with The Wilco Album. I appreciate the effort to do something off, but my favorite track is definitely "One Sunday Morning", the closer. I think "I Love My Label" is a Nick Lowe cover.

Also, props to Leeds. I was curious about that Metallica/Lou Reed collaboration, but there was no way I was going to subject myself to actually listening to it. I feel like I don't have to now.

Would have been nice if Taylor Hawkins hadn't spent the entire song wailing on his cymbals, but this was pretty cool.

It also turns out it's a bonus track. Deleting the bonus tracks from my iPod makes me love this album even more.

They covered this Monday night with Taylor singing.
I think my favorite part, though, is Dave's goofy grin the entire song.

The thing that cracks me up about Dave Grohl is that he's always talking about "I've made it" moments (he did this Monday night before playing Times Like These, in fact). Dude, your band is one of the top rock acts out there. You sell out arenas. You had 120,000 people in two days watch you in Wembley Stadium. I think you made it a loooong time ago.

Completely agree with you. I just find it funny how he's still saying "I made it" comments 16 years later.
I think that's something I just really love about this band. They don't really take themselves too seriously. They had their rough patches years ago, but they just go out and have some fun these days.

So, you know, my poor quality foo fighters video. And this is what I was referring to with Dave Grohl saying he made it.

Yeah, but I used to hang around the guys that opened for them in Wembley. They definitely did NOT make it, so i can see why it's hard to accept that.
Then again, Foo Fighters have been doing that for a decade, and those 120,000 fans were there for Foo Fighters, not the openers, so it isn't really the same, but I do get why it's constantly amazing to Dave that he's doing what he's doing when he's doing it.

Caught the Felice Bros. at Webster Hall last night. I cannot for the life of me figure out whether I like those guys. While I really love their folk rock standards like "Frankie's Gun" and "Take This Bread", I understand that if they stuck with that formula they'd be just like any one of a million folk rock bands out there these days. But some of the more experimental effects they toy with just seem so out of place and forced. They opened last night with some weirdo track that had an electronic drum beat and new-wave-style synthesizers. When they added deliberately laconic and atonal vocals over it, I just did not dig it at all.

The real treat, however, was getting to see Rangerland's own, Chris4 on the drum kit playing with Nicole Atkins to open. You guys sounded great up there, Chris, really looked like you were having fun. As I mentioned to you, Vultures and The Tower really stood out. I even liked Cry, Cry, Cry, and as I've told you before, that song is certainly not my fave on the album. Irina gets better and better each time I see her.

Have you been listening to the new album at all? It is definitely challenging but I've found it rewarding. They do seem to be very deliberately moving against expectations.

Chris4, I really like that Nicole Atkins album. Vulture and The Tower are definitely the stand out tracks.

'The fuck? One of my co-workers has a propensity to inappropriately bring his (very strange) children into the office for hours at a time. He and his daughter have been listening to some Yankee Doodle rap for the last 6 minutes and I'm getting ready to murder someone. Just as they cut it out, the Middle School band is firing up at the Farmer's Market out my window.

You know what I've never listened to until this very moment? The original, Nirvana version of Marigold.
http://open.spotify.com/track/09aF9vhHwC187dABixAOfV

I had only heard the Foo Fighters version (Dave wrote the song) on the Skin and Bones album.

Have you been listening to the new album at all? It is definitely challenging but I've found it rewarding. They do seem to be very deliberately moving against expectations.

I haven't been, no. I was put off by hearing some of the things I mentioned above in some of the tracks I heard. I will give it another go, though.

My initial review of the new album in this thread is relevant:

http://rangerland.net/forum/index.php?show...mp;#entry449406

I was still undecided on the album at that point and said that some of the songs were "Spastic dirges that are both dull and confusing, featuring random changes in tempo and melody." The more I listened to it, though, the more sense it made. The two tracks I linked to there, 'Fire at The Pagent' and 'Ponzi' are definitely the most accessible but also check out 'Cus's Catskill Gym' and 'Honda Civic' as possible hooks. Eventually the whole album grew on me. I don't like it as much as their self-titled album or Yonder is The Clock but I like that they're evolving as a band rather than coasting.

As my workload is approximately 1000% worse here than it was at school, and it all involves a different language, I've been listening to tons of relatively ambient, relaxing music. American Analog Set's "Know by Heart" has really gotten my attention.

My brother gave it to me about a year ago, but this is the first time I've really listened to it. Definitely give it my seal of approval.

Have you been listening to the new album at all? It is definitely challenging but I've found it rewarding. They do seem to be very deliberately moving against expectations.

Chris4, I really like that Nicole Atkins album. Vulture and The Tower are definitely the stand out tracks.

Cliff, whats quintessential Felice Brothers to listen to? I'm not quite sure I get it either.

Tell you what though, their crowd is a pleasure to play for. Respectful but loud, attentive, and generally into it. Was expecting a bit of an Avett's crowd, but was dead wrong. Avett's crowd being Birkenstock college kids with the slight tinge of disintrested hipsters scattered throughout.

The place to start with The Felice Brothers is their self titled album, without a doubt. (It's not their first but it's their best.) Frankie's Gun is their most popular song:

But the whole album is amazing and chock full of great songs like Radio Song:

When this album hit it big, people immediately pigeon-holed them as Dylanesque purveyors of Americana/indie folk but there was an underlying weirdness as well which came through on tracks like Helen Fry

Their next album, Yonder is The Clock, is also worth a listen. It's darker and a bit more subtle but it's sill got some hook laden songs like this:

That's generally the album the critics like the most.

Anyway, if you listen to nothing else, listen to their self-titled album all the way through. It's one of my favorite albums.

Okay, I really like the stuff off this self titled record. I'm gonna pick it up. As Mike said, they took the stage to some goofy wierd synth tunes the other night which I admittedly didnt hang around much longer for.

Frankie's Gun has a real The Band vibe to it, which rules. Thanks, Cliff!

This was just one of those bands I've heard about forever, and actually knew stuff about (ie. Simone plays drums on Avett Brothers and other records you wouldnt suspect) without actually hearing them.

It was probably Ponzi that I listened to when you first posted it, and just really didn't dig it. They wouldn't be the first band that I liked a lot more later on, though.

I just got back from a Panda Bear show at the Masonic Temple in Brooklyn. It really was a caricature of hipsterdom - artist named Panda Bear books a gig at a venue in Fort Greene that is only slightly more ornate than a high school gymnasium, sings into a mic and plays guitar while another guy turns a bunch of knobs on a control panel, neither one saying a word the whole time, completely random images flashing continuously on a screen in the background, all while a stoic crowd of people in various combinations of curled mustaches, beards, mullets, black-rimmed glasses, v-neck t-shirts and skinny jeans stands around nodding their heads slightly with folded arms.

That said, it was a pretty good show. On this tour, he's been playing Tomboy start to finish, which makes for a nice flow live. The sound was jarringly loud, but once you got used to it and sort of zoned out, it was tolerable. The effects drowned out the vocals at times, but others worked really well in that space. I don't know the second half of that album that well, but I think it was "Scheherazade" where the looped chanting vocals really sounded great.

I found someone who should be your new best friend. I had never heard of this, you may have, but here is NYC Taper.. This person records and archives indie rock shows across NYC. I just stumbled on this while narcissistically searching for a review of my gig the other night. Rather than a review.. I just found the whole gig recorded.

If you've never heard of this(maybe you have and I'm that out of it), I've just ruined your day because you may spend the rest of it downloading. Which is what I'm doing. Fuck.

Cliff, the whole Felice Bros set is in its own blog post, too.

That is very cool indeed. If he's pulling sound off the board, I assume he's operating with permission of the musicians or the venues (which is of course the first thing I thought of).

Folk fans, Blind Pilot. Their new album, We Are the Tide, is pretty damn good. I've been listening to it about 3 times a day for the past week. They're touring now and I can't wait to see them live.

I've seen Blind Pilot playing around, will keep an eye out.

A friend of mine recently introduced me to Bruce Peninsula, and these guys are pretty wild. From their Wikipedia page: "their style has been described as 'a near indescribable and rousing potpourri of prog, gospel, folk, rock, pop and country.'"

New album coming out any day.
