Mike, have you checked out Pepper Rabbit - Red Velvet Snowball? The whole album is fantastic and one of my favorites for the year.

To Spotify!

Blind Pilot was around NY the week before last, and unfortunately I was traveling. Too bad, because on two of the dates Gregory Allan Isakov opened for them, and he's great.

Bummer. Getting tix to see City and Colour who remind me a little of Bon Iver. They should be in your neck of the wood in a few weeks.

The uptake: incredible talent, but unfortunately too focused on belting out soaring melodies over melodramatic strings and booming timpanis, and it gets tiring. Would have been nice to have a few more low-fi songs like "Kiss With a Fist" from her first record.

I agree for now but I am reserving judgement as Lungs didn't grab me initially either. I came back to it six months after and was like, "Holy shit -- How did I not love this the first time around?"

The new Feist is leaving me mostly cold.

I think I mentioned Mara Carlye here, right? That's the female vocalist who is grabbing me at the moment.

To Spotify with me as well. Thanks.

Also: I was just looking over my list of favorite albums for the year and, holy shit, it's massive. I have a feeling that our year-end lists will share a couple of titles but mostly be completely different just because there's been so much good stuff this year.

Yep. The Decemberists may not even crack my Top 10, and I didn't put that album down for a month when it first came out.

Still Polly Jean Harvey in the lead for me, though. I can honestly say that that album has changed the way I think about the world.

I still say it'll be a fucking crime ("The Decemberists new album is criminally underrated") if you leave it off, and a total case of "discounting due to proximity."

I'll give my "best of" list a listen before the end of the year. As we were discussing offline, I just really like all the weird stuff that came out this year, like St. Vincent and tune-yards. The King is Dead is gorgeous, but it's also conventional.

I'm with Beardo on this one. 'Top three for me, even if it was the first album that came out this year.

I will not spoil my list but I'm sure everyone can guess my number one. Competition for the last five spots is fierce I was planning on listening to my top twenty soon to try sorting it all out.

You can append those as post-scripts wink.gif (There are really no hard and fast rules but usually we're posting our favorite albums that came out in a given year. I have two from last year that would have made my list so I'm going to append them as a post-script.)

I couldn't decide how I felt about those guys. I was intrigued enough that I may go see them next Wednesday, but I like the similarly-genred War on Drugs a lot better.

I think I have heard Givers before, especially "Up, Up, Up", but I thought they were Vampire Weekend because the lead vocals on that track sound so similar to Ezra Koenig's. Liking it so far! Cool that they're from Lafayette.

I was sure coming into September nothing would top the Decemberists and Fleet Foxes as 1-2. Now I'm not sure if the latter is really in the top 5. Or 7. Fuck this year is going to be hard. I still dont' know what my favorite is. Thanks for the Spotify suggestions also I need something new that isn't Noel Gallagher.

Part of me wants to think that reissues and remasters are just gimmicks, but some of them sound amazing, and it makes a huge difference. The Beatles two years ago and the Exile on Main Street remaster from last year (you could barely fucking hear the vocals on "Happy" in the original) are good examples. Add the Smiths re-issue from a few weeks ago to that list. Sounds great. Especially Hatful of Hollow, which is my all-time fave.

I was looking over albums I purchased this year to see my thoughts. Two were from this year. Two. So by default they are the top 2.

My Top 5 will have to be top 5 I bought this year.

edit: I lied, looked again, I bought 5 albums that came out this year. So by default those would be top five, but that's lame, I bought other albums that have come out earlier that I like way more.

This has been a fantastic year for music.

Tv on the Radio, Fleet Foxes, James Blake, etc. all coming out with great albums.

But, Bon Iver will, without a doubt, be my number one. That album is a fucking masterpiece.

Also, if I were to do my 2010 top 10 again High Violet by The National would easily be #1. What a gorgeous album.

That seems to be a near universal sentiment. It would have made an okay bonus disc accompanying a better album. As is, I think it instantly becomes everyone's least favorite Radiohead album.

Well thats kinda what I was hoping for. It was what, 3 fulls years since In Rainbows? I figured they'da turned right around around and released another record in total Radiohead fashion. In 3 years, all they could come up with was those 8 duds? 7 if you count the fact that Mr. Magpie has been around since the late 90's in some form or another.

Jonny Greenwood is one of my favorite guitar players of all time. There's no guitar playing on that album.

You know, I think it is an ok album. If any other band had released it, people would have given it a few listens, enjoyed some tracks, and maybe played it every few weeks after that. But, because our expectations are so insanely high, it's being portrayed, rather unfairly in my opinion, as total shit.

I like it better than Hail to the Thief.

I know Radiohead can do better. They have had one of the best 15 year runs in music history. So, is The King of Limbs on par with The Bends or Kid A? No. Not even in the same ballpark. But, I think it's a decent album with some catchy songs.

I can come to terms with the senseless violence, I understand that bad things happen to good people and that God doesn't intercede in mortal affairs in the way we might want him to, but what I don't understand is why he dyed his hair red. Doesn't the Joker have green hair? What, was Sally's Beauty Supply out of Electric Lizard Manic Panic or something?

I like it better than Hail to the Thief.

Whereas I really like Hail to The Thief.

If King of Limbs had a fatal-to-me flaw, it's that I found it dull. I respect what they were going for artistically but it did nothing for me. I felt much the same way about the most recent Spoon album and that's another one of my favorite bands.

I am hoping for a return to form not unlike the Decemberists who followed up an album I absolutely detested with one that I absolutely loved. I fear, however, that The Decemberists are a band at the peak of their creative energy whereas Radiohead might be entering into the unfortunate twilight that we see afflicting bands like U2 or Massive Attack.

Then again, you have bands like Dinosaur Jr and Superchunk that can go away for years after having petered out only to explode back on the scene with albums that rival their best output from earlier in their lifespan so, hope is never lost.

Whereas I loved Heligoland and thing the demo they posted a week ago was a very solid track!

Here it is again

Radiohead knows what it is doing. They don't give a fuck what you think. I suspect they will be back with another release that blows our mind. I have a feeling this was a radiohead for radiohead album that they just released. I thought it was very good, there just happen to be so much out there this year. Last year King of Limbs would have been top 3 for me.

Interesting story about how a guy selling his Mini Disc player led to a discovery of an old Elliott Smith Demo song that had never been heard before.

That is fucking awesome.

I can haz a question about this Spotify thingamajig.

Mike sent me an invite via email to the thing, but I have platform apps or whatever they are called set to OFF on my Facebook because I tried to set my Facebook to be as minimally invasive as possible.

Can I use Spotify without it being involved with Facebook or do they go hand in hand?

No, you can use it without connecting Facebook. I do that.

Though the Facebook integration is fun. It lets you view share playlists with friends and see what they are listening to (if they so desire).

You can also connect with other users and view their profiles without going through Facebook. https://www.spotify.com/us/help/faq/social/...my-people-list/

I think you can do that anyway without FB, but yeah, I like seeing friends from my FB list pop up on Spotify and see what they're listening to.

Spotify recently changed so that new users are required to use FB for their login, I think.

That sucks. And that will stop me from using it. While I do enjoy seeing what certain people on my FB friends list are listening to, Mike being one of them, I dont want to allow platform applications on my Facebook page. Damn.

Thanks for all the info, guys.

You have on-demand access to their entire library. So it's not limited to radio-style listening like Pandora. I love it because it's an opportunity to listen to new music albums multiple times without hassle to see if I like them.
