Has anyone ever gone to, or know anyone who's gone to Bonnaroo? Any thoughts? I generally dislike festivals, especially ones that big, and the thought of being in the middle of nowhere with a bunch of hippies really, really does not appeal to me. But so many people gush about it, and the lineups are always great.

I have friends that love it, but they're the perfect combination of dirty hippy and douchebag that was listening to the Black Keys in 2008 and calling them the best indie thing ever.

The lineups are a wet dream for an indie weenie like me. But the thought of camping out with thousands of other people in the middle of nowhere is less than appealing.

I would love to go this year.

I'm going to be in D.C. over the summer, but I would 100% be down to go. I'm trying to recruit friends right now.

That is a KILLER lineup.

In the meantime, here's some cool G-Funk

If you want to spend some money....I think you can rent an RV on site with all the comforts. You would also have to buy VIP tickets for anyone staying with you. At least I think you can....probably a limited amount of rentals that they would have.

I think I'll be passing on this one.

Also, meant to tell you and anyone else here who's interested - The Avett Bros. are playing Terminal 5 in May. Tix go on sale next week, I think on the 22nd if you have an Amex card. I'll definitely be going.

Michael, here's the rub on Bonnaroo. Its expensive as hell for some serious conditions of squalor.

If you really wanna check out one of these festivals, wait till the Austin City Limits Festival lineup comes out. It will be nearly identical to Bonnaroo, have that same out in the field type vibe, but be walking distance from a downtown area with a serious fuckton to do during a festival week. For my money at least..

Caught Sleigh Bells at Terminal 5 tonight. I was the oldest guy there by ten years easy. They tore it up though. Crazy energy, and when they played "Crown on the Ground" to close, the crowd went ape shit.

Is that show sold out? I'm going to see them on April 1st at Webster Hall, but have been meaning to head up to New Haven for a show. Some surprisingly big ones come through there.

Rock is the New Jazz

Article says rock music is going the way of the dinosaur in popular culture, but there are a lot of advantages to that.

I agree with him a little. Here's what I wrote in response:

QUOTE
I think you're right, but it will be just on a slower and smaller scale than you predict. Rock may not be the most popular genre of music anymore (though it really hasn't been for at least 10 years) but it's still rather popular all things considered and still fills arenas.

Here's one of the "problems" as I see it: There are very few interesting personalities in the rock world these days. Almost everyone is a humble, understated, scruffy young man in a button down shirt. Rock music needs the new Keith Richards, Frank Zappa, John Lennon, Keith Moon, Robert Plant, Ozzy, Kurt Kobain, Jello Biafra, Henry Rollins and so on. Nobody stands out at all. The music is still interesting as ever, but the performers are faceless.

I think the writer of this article is overblowing things. And as people point out in the comments section, he's a Jazz critic who sounds almost happy that pop and hip hop is doing to rock the same thing rock did to jazz in the 60s. But I guess the question is, do you care? We won't have less access to rock music in all its forms. With the internet, there's no lack of places to read or talk about rock music. Popular culture will ignore it, but rock was always supposed to be the dangerous one you didn't bring home to mom, anyway. But then that gets to what I wrote in the comments section: Most of the people who perform rock music these days are usually introverted, quiet, even boring.

The show is not sold out and I have a ticket for you if you want one. I really like Toads Place. Reminds me of an old bar venue I went to a long time ago.
And they really do get the occasional gem there.

State Radio's cover of Zombie by the Cranberries is awesome.

Also, I played a lot of pool tonight, but kept losing. But its all good since it was "punk" bar and the people I kept losing to were old enough to see the Clash Live, so I feel they deserved to win where we were.

Caught Mates of State tonight at Maxwell's - probably the best show I've seen there. Not sure if it was them, whether Maxwell's got better sound equipment, or both, but the sound was just huge, and clear. On some songs one of the vocal mics sounded a little weak, but other than that it was great. MoS are really fun and energetic, and really endearing and earnest in a way. I really feel so lucky that I live in a city where I can see stuff like that for friggin' $20 all the time.

Rocha, that article sounds interesting, will comment after I sleep for the next 13 hours.

Not sure if I get this Sleigh Bells thing. The chick is good, but I'm not sure I'm impressed by dudes in denim jackets playing Ibanez guitars to backing tracks. What am I missing?

Also, whipped out my Pinback records this week. Blue Screen Life and Summer in Abbadon are great records. I was a huge, huge fan until I did a gig with them somewhere a long the line and they were awful. Records hold up to time, though.

And speaking of 2005.. Also revisited Cripple Crow this week. What a great album. Devendra Banhart's voice crushes me.

I like the whole shrill, distorted, dystopian, noisy feel of it. It's not anything technically amazing, but it works. Plus like I said above, they were pretty amazing live. This clip is a good approximation of the show the other night, if you can sit through it without getting a seizure.

That looks more interesting that what I saw on SNL last night. Which I found lacking. I was shocked at how weak the lead singer was...and their at best... fair musicianship.
Maybe they toned it down and were limited by the studio, but that would be a mistake.

I think they played two new songs on SNL - I read that "Comeback Kid" was one of them. I don't like the new material that's coming out on their new CD. From what I can tell, it really gets away from the harder sound I was talking about above.

I checked out Sleigh Bells.

I was enjoying it, then I found out the one guy is from Poison the Well. I'm enjoying it a bit less now. True to their namesake, those guys taint anything they touch.

QUOTE(Rocha @ Feb 18 2012, 05:52 PM) *

Wait, another "Rock is Dead" article by a music critic? laugh2.gif Been wondering when another would pop up...it's been a while. blah.gif emot-jerkbag.gif I remember articles like this back in the early '90s - right before Nirvana hit. The rest, yada yada yada, is history. Besides, when kids pick up guitars today, they're not playing Django; they're playing Sabbath. Rock and roll is alive and well, thank you very much.

Having said that, I do agree with him a little too -- and I don't necessarily think it's a bad thing. The problem is he's missing the bigger point: rock doesn't need to be big, because it's already taken over. Veni Vidi Vici; it doesn't need to prove anything to anyone anymore. When Lady Gaga says that Iron Maiden is one of her favorite bands, when Rhianna employs Nuno Bettencourt in her backing band, when Mutt Lange produces country records using the same methods he used with AC/DC, and when Snoop Dogg is covering Metallica, rock's dominion is already established.

But for the sake of argument, suppose he's 100% right. Lemme revisit your comment for a sec:

I totally agree.

I've always been a fan of Kiss. The makeup, goofy costumes, flashpots, Marshall amps, etc. But I also like the songs, too. Sure, the lyrics are dumb, and the song structures very basic, but it's fun, and the overall effect - the songs plus the silly theatrics - is entertaining. This is what a lot of modern rock performers and the critics who enable them fail to understand. This is the entertainment business. Granted, the examples you listed didn't wear goofy costumes and shit, but they all had personality and charisma and weren't too concerned about appealing to the sensibilities of the general public (even if, ironically, this made them popular). They weren't afraid to do "unhip" things and even look/sound silly on occasion. Say what you want about Nicky Minaj, Gaga, Katy Perry, etc., but I admire the fact that they dont' mind looking crazy or stupid. That's more rock than anything Boniver is doing, IMO.

I'm not certain Rock is alive. Are there any non-college current rock stations left in this country? At best you get hits from the 80s and 90s with the occasional new Nickelback or Stone Sour song mixed in.
That's not alive. That's having some times worth remembering but needing to be brought around behind the shed.

There are great bands out there getting minor attention and filling small clubs, but the days of Van Halen and Bon Jovi filling arenas are dead. Well, Van Halen and Bon Jovi will still fill arenas, but new bands aren't doing it. In part that could be because rock went two ways: either sincere and earnest, which means low key, or in your face sold out desperate for attention, which means white trash and Nickelback. None of the former seems to garner much attention, and none of the latter has the ability to make a song that doesn't sound like everything else.

Fiona Apple announced some shows this March in the Northeast, including one at Music Hall, and one at Bowery Ballroom. This makes me happy.
