From the Marty Stuart Show:

Deke Dickerson jumps in for a song. Fun Old Timey Stuff. Kenny Vaughan was in Lucinda Williams band for a few years and he can play anything.

I keep coming back to the Heartless Bastards album, especially Parted Ways. Such a great song.

Yeah, that's the same one that caught my ear as well. It seems like every Heartless Bastards album has one great song on it. Last time around it was "Had To Go."

Perfume Genius and the new Shins. Perfume Genius is really pretty. The new Shins album is nice, yet not grabbing me to make me want to make it a top 10 or anything.

Oh and hey, meant to tell you, I saw the Joy Formidable last night. So great. They've finished recording their new album and just need to mix it, should be out later this year. They said they'll be coming back around with a more extensive tour.

This Chromatics album is pretty good:

Sythy shoe-gaze with an 80's vibe. It reminds me of the soundtrack for Drive.

New Lampchop album is quite good. Definitely has potential for top 10. Long, but not boring.

Teddy and I caught Wild Flag in New Haven tonight, and wow did they kill it. So tight, so high energy. I can't really believe how good Janet Weiss was.

Probably the only time I ever enjoyed a drum solo was when I saw Janet Weiss with Quasi.

As much as I want to I just can't get into Wild Flag. Carrie Brownstein trading verses with Corin Tucker? Great. Carrie Brownstein as lead singer? No thanks, especially when you have Mary Timony in the band. Does she ever do lead vocals?

It was about an even share on lead vocals.

The live show exceeds the album greatly IMO...but I've always preferred the dirty noise to a studio record.

Agreed, and as is often the case, enjoyment of the album will be enhanced after seeing the show. I blasted.it the whole way home, and heard it in a completely new way. And yes, they.blew the roof off with Racehorse.

Forgot to mention, Hospitality opened. Good sound, but the lead.singer's vocals.really.weren't strong enough for a.live show yet. Like the record, though.

I liked Hospitality. I think they could have fixed the vocals weakness with a good technician (or equipment?)....but she and both guitars got blown away by the drums and bass.

I saw them when they played "Music Midtown" which is Atlanta's only festival. None of my friends were into it, but it was so amazing. Would have obviously been better if it were a smaller venue not a giant open park, but gah they were so awesome. Can't believe you saw them and Wild Flag within one week, I am truly jealous.

Sadly, Of Monsters and Men sold out the day before I bought my ticket. It was my fault for not buying it early, but I found out it would have cost me 120 euro round trip to get to the city. Not even a 15 euro ticket justifies that. sad.gif

Seeing Foster the People (sorry Chris4 don't care if they've sold out too much) in June though had a friend already buy the ticket so that should be awesome.

I want to start listening to some classical jazz. Like stuff that would remind you of an early Woody Allen movie like Manhattan or Annie Hall.

I assume that's sufficient for you all to hand over some good suggestions.

Woody Allen loves old-timey swing-type stuff. Start with the Django Reinhart/Stephane Grappelli recordings, can't go wrong with those.

This looks like a good collection:

Have you guys seen the list of artist on The Hunger Games soundtrack:

The Arcade Fire
The Decemberists
Neko Case
The Low Anthem
Taylor Swift
The Civil Wars

and more. If you dig Americana, this is a great album. It's a little heavy on the mournful laments, which is to be expected given the subject matter, but there are enough up-tempo songs mixed in to keep it from becoming a slog. There are a couple of misses but most of the songs are good to great.

This is Taylor Swift's collaboration with The Civil Wars:

I didn't like the Arcade Fire song I heard, but will have to check that out, it is quite a lineup indeed.

It's always funny to me how albums can strike you in completely different ways at different times. I had listened to Eleanor Friedberger's solo album a few times before, never really registered, queued it up today, and I'm loving it.

Also getting more into Gonjasufi's latest album:

This is one of those works that toes the line between ground-breaking and weird, and self-indulgent sloppy bullshit, very precariously. Successfully, IMO.

Finally, Of Monsters and Men in Brooklyn tonight! I think it's one of, if not the first of their big stateside shows, so it should be cool. You can stream the concert live if you are so inclined: http://houselist.bowerypresents.com/2012/0...en-stream-live/

This post goes out to Leedsy....

Just returned from seeing Grant Hart at Café Nine in New Haven.
For those who don’t know, Grant was the other half of the creative duo who led Husker Du along with Bob Mould. They pumped out punk masterpiece albums until they broke up in 1987.
He's put out some great music after that time, but never reached the audience he had with Husker Du.

Grant is a long time addict and looks the part. His teeth are rotting and his once strong voice is weakened. He did have a decent haircut and looked a normal weight, but lots of wear and tear on him. Even for a 50 year old.
I counted about 35 people there and it boggles my mind that so few were there, but then I was lucky to find out about it myself. He promotes nothing.

The show was weak for several songs. Grants played electric guitar and sang a good mix of his songs....but a little more than halfway through he asked the audience what he forgot to play and we started throwing out songs. All of a sudden, he starts to sound better. His voice is hitting higher notes and becomes clearer. He’s rallying! His guitar work was good all show, but now his voice is matching and he’s singing his biggest songs.... Green Eyes, She Floated Away, Keep Hanging On, Pink Turns to Blue and a really sweet and beautiful version of Flexible Flyer. He played every song that was requested. And finished with a great version of Evergreen Memorial Drive.

I might have to cut bait next time, but at least I got to see him shine for a little while.

Sorry Sed...I had no idea. There sure was plenty of room.

Cafe Nine is basically a dive bar with a small stage. It appears they do some folk music type shows and have had some decent acts like the Felice Brothers. I'm gonna check their show list occasionally for stuff. This was a lucky catch by my friend.

I bought the Minibosses' albums this week at PAX East. People like rock covers of video game music, right?

RIGHT?!

I told Mike about this and I'm not exactly blazing a pioneer trail here, but I'm fucking obsessed with Austra right now. Ye goth-y synth-pop lady-vocals fans, go get 'em.

This song is awesome and video has ladies in underwear!:

I thought he actually cleaned up. Either way, good to see him still making music. Did he drum at all or just stick to the guitar? As much as I love HD, I always thought Grant was the weak link, whether it was his obnoxious drumming or insistance on punk-pop songs. But in retrospect he probably kept the band grounded and prevented them from devolving into a pure aggro band like Agnostic Front, which might have been their destiny. Probably my favorite late-era Husker song is one of Grant's: "She's a Woman (And Now He Is a Man)."

Just a man and his guitar. Up to about two years ago he looked pretty gaunt. His voice is not what it was, but he's not as young as he used to be too. His teeth were just plain nasty. I don't get why people don't fix them, but I'm not familiar with drug damage and what its effect is on the entire mouth and its ability to host dental repairs. He probably has the money...WTF.

He really hasn't done any drumming since they broke up. And it's a good thing because he wasn't very good. When they played live, he was fun to watch because he looked like Animal, but yeah...mediocre at best.

Grants songs were poppy, but also such a great vehicle for Bob's guitar. His songs were for me equally memorable. He gave them a balance. If it was all Bob at that time it would have been fun, but also not as unique to the scene at the time. He really was the first one to add something sweet, besides the usual themes to hardcore song subjects. It made them unique.

He didn't do She's a Woman, but he did sing "Charity, Chastity, Prudence, and Hope" and "You're a Soldier" from Warehouse ...both sounded good. An older show below...

Dr. John is someone who I just always took for granted as part of the "awesome American legend" group, but his new album is great. Dan Auerbach did the production and also played guitar. It adds a really contemporary sound to the traditional NOLA R&B/rock vibe, which I like but can be stale sometimes.

Dr. John is someone who I only know as a part of a Patton Oswalt shtick.

I think his debut Gris-Gris album is one of the 10 greatest albums of all time.

OF ALL TIME.

See! He is ubiquitous and yet, I personally probably don't know his catalog nearly as well as I should. I focus more on the piano-heavy NOLA classics, but he was definitely one of the first people to try and mix that kind of R&B with rock, and his stage act and persona was always great too.

I'm on such a Jimmy Eat World kick lately. I'll stop listening to them for a couple of months, they'll come on my iTunes at random and it's all I'll listen to for days on end.

My sister and I saw Pulp at Radio City last night, and they were great. I was never a huge fan (my sister LOVED them), but I went to hang with her and for the historical value. Jarvis Cocker still has a deep, powerful voice, and he still jumps around like a loon on stage. Good sound overall too, which isn't a given at Radio City.
