My sister and I saw Pulp at Radio City last night, and they were great. I was never a huge fan (my sister LOVED them), but I went to hang with her and for the historical value. Jarvis Cocker still has a deep, powerful voice, and he still jumps around like a loon on stage. Good sound overall too, which isn't a given at Radio City.

I hate you so much sometimes. That hate is pure jealousy just an FYI.

Finally listened to "Call me Maybe" for the first time.

I don't understand how this has turned into a cultural phenomenon (at least for college kids).

I don't get it.

After that fucking motherfucking shitfest of a hockey game, I hopped over to Maxwell's to catch White Denim, and then after that to Brooklyn Bowl to catch Shabazz Palaces, who went on a little before 1 a.m. Timing would have worked out perfectly if the dickhead Rangers didn't blow the lead. As it was though, I was still able to catch about 40 minutes of White Denim's set, and timed the start of the Shabazz show perfectly.

Maxwell's is a perfect venue for White Denim. Small, hot, sweaty, and I don't know what the hell they did to their sound system recently, but it sounds amazing. I can't get over how good White Denim are. They are just the perfect type of jam-band for me, meaning that they are high-energy, incredible musicians who use virtuosic solos to incorporate sophisticated rhythms and jazz chord progressions without extending into 30-minute long aimless and self-indulgent bullshit. At one point, they played five or six of their songs in a row without stopping for half an hour, and the crowd was in a frenzy by the time they came up for air.

Shabazz Palaces was cool, but not sure if they're they kind of act one needs to see live. There's only so much you can get live from a guy rapping over tracks from a laptop, even if he has a live drummer with him. But Butterfly really seemed to be enjoying himself and the crowd, and it was definitely cool to hear some of my favorite tracks on Black Up live. Especially "Swerve" and "Free Press and Curl". Plus, I have yet to see a show in Brooklyn Bowl that I didn't enjoy. Love that place.

Maxwell's is my favorite club ever. Even before I lived there we used to drive up and catch shows a few times a month for years. There's nothing particularly unique about it, they just have been booking everyone interesting in indie rock since the early 80s, the staff isn't surly or snotty like at a lot of clubs, the food & drink is good, prices are low -- it's just a cool, unpretentious place.

Yeah, it's pretty great. I like Brooklyn Bowl a little better because it's easier to get to for me, and I like the industrial decor inside a lot. I also really like the area around BB. But Maxwell's definitely has the advantage in terms of intimacy and vibe. The staff is so friendly and polite there that it's almost jarring. Big points for the bar right near the main floor and stage, too.

Yes! I like that album too. Especially "Ruby, Are You Mad at Your Man?"

Didn't realize they were on the HG soundtrack. I found out about them through their label's Facebook newsfeed, which I've recently found is a great way to find out about new artists. I never realized until recently how many of the artists I love are on the same labels. The Chocolate Drops are on Nonesuch, for example, which also currently has Wilco, The Black Keys, The Low Anthem, Bjork, and Dr. John, among others. Other great ones are 4AD (St. Vincent, National, tune-yards), Matador (Kurt Vile, Fucked Up, New Pornos, Perfume Genius), and Merge (Mountain Goats, M. Ward, Wild Flag, Wye Oak, Lambchop).

Do we have a collective opinion on The Alabama Shakes? They're one of those groups that I'm inclined to like at first, but are so clearly derivative without trying to do anything new that it's hard for me to fully give them props. One of their songs almost straight up lifts the opening riff to "Little Wing":

http://open.spotify.com/track/4g2zk7rmK8hIc8sEnxXMqJ

Other than that, it's basically a mash of Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Otis Redding. Great sound for sure, but if I wanna hear Otis, I'll play Otis.

Yeah, that first track off the album which you posted is so good, it just grabs you right away. The rest of the album I enjoyed but it was a little bit of a let down after that. It hasn't quite cracked my rotation but I need to give it a couple of more listens.

Despite my comments above, I currently have a strong urge to fire up the Shakes record, so I definitely think they have a great sound.

Are the Hives coming out with a new album? I know they're basically a modern day Kinks, but I love those guys. I happened to check my e-mail in the elevator on the way home, and they announced a last-minute show at Webster Hall next week. Score!

Sort of the same vibe as this track - another killer tune.

I don't think it's been mentioned here, so all those with similar tastes in music as mine (XC, Mike, Bug, Kusand etc.) absolutely should pick up the new Spiritualized album. It's fantastic and absolutely deserved the Best New Music it got.

This song has a much more "country" feel than the rest of the album, but it's probably my favorite track.

I can come to terms with the senseless violence, I understand that bad things happen to good people and that God doesn't intercede in mortal affairs in the way we might want him to, but what I don't understand is why he dyed his hair red. Doesn't the Joker have green hair? What, was Sally's Beauty Supply out of Electric Lizard Manic Panic or something?

I'm not sure I would categorize Rebelution as ska. They're pretty much straight-up reggae. Same with Slightly Stoopid. I can't get into the whole reggae thing. I do, however, like the bands that mix it up with ska and punk like Sublime first did and the way that groups like Pepper, the Expendables and, too a lesser extent, the Mad Caddies do today. That's good shit. I like to call it white boy reggae.

Nonesuch announced on their FB feed that today is the 10th anniversary of the release of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. As we discussed elsewhere, I am sorry that I was not a bigger fan earlier on, would have been great to catch them in a show back then. I love "Jesus, etc.", but I think that my favorite song on the album is "I am trying to break your heart". Really exemplifies the mix of sweet melodies and vocals with weird and dissonant experimental stuff that make Wilco so interesting.

Also, caught Washed Out last night at the Highline Ballroom. Good not great. I love Within and Without, and I really like that when he plays out he brings a band so it's not just him singing over recorded tracks. But the sound was pretty bad, could barely hear the vocals. Have tix to see the Vaccines tonight, trying to decide whether I want to see them or watch the skunt Rangers.

Meanwhile, it has unfortunately become easy to forget how awesome Courtney Love was:

Live Through This and Celebrity Skin are great albums (not familiar with their first). Was organizing my CD collection over the weekend, and completely forgot that I owned a copy of the latter.

Has anyone posted any Dry The River? A few songs into this new album and I think it's gonna be in my top 5 for the year. Folky rock from across the pond.

The songs on this album that are great are really, really great but about half the album does nothing for me. I suspect this is entirely due to my own personal taste -- I don't think they are bad songs, they just don't grab me the way that the album's highlights do. Still, those highlights are good enough that the album's worked it's way into my rotation.

Also, Fiona Apple's new song came out yesterday, didn't have the chance to take a good listen.
