"212" was jarring and amazing. Been meaning to give her new album a spin. She seemed like she wasn't dealing with newfound and sudden fame all that well, but hopefully that was just temporary.

1991 was a fantastic EP. She's dropping a mixtape later this summer which I'm pumped for.

"212" may be my favorite track of this year (I'm counting it as 2012 even if it was kind of released in late December 2011).

Got pulled into a conference call just as Gasllight Anthem tickets were going on sale, and by the time I came out 10 minutes later, they were gone. Bummer. Those guys really have a dedicated following.

Hate they aren't coming to Atlanta sad.gif

Also hate Azealia Banks has a show in 2 days in NYC and there are still tickets. Figured you might want to know Mike.

That was gonna be a tough call, but thankfully the decision is made for me, looks like it actually is sold out.

I heard this on Sirius this morning and ended up replaying it about five times:

CLASSIC instrumental metal. I hear a lot of Anvil's influence in early Iron Maiden. No surprise there though considering they both came out of the U.K.

I have a question for you guys. When you're at concerts do you dance a log to the music? Not like full on dancing but move your body and nod your head to the music "dancing". There were a lot of people just kind of standing there tonight not really moving around and I want to know If I'm violating more social Norms.

So yeah dancing at concerts ok or am I dumb for getting into it?

dance like no one is watching.Unless the music sucks.

I have a friend who goes all out geek...snapping his fingers, shaking his arms and makes whooping sounds that are poorly timed with the music...I admire that jackass so fucking much.

Anyone that doesn't move to the music just strikes me as uptight or completely uninterested.

Ok that's what I thought. I legitimately felt old at this concert, so did my friends. We were surrounded by high schoolers in the pit for Foster the People. They put on a heck of a show (the band not the lame high schoolers and their mom's watching), but the Kooks almost outplayed them as the opener even when 75% of the people there had no idea who they were.

I'm not sure if the new Metric album is any good but I'm definitely enjoying it.

Also, New Fiona Apple streaming on NPR:

Yes, was definitely excited to see that pop up in my news feed this morning. I need to listen to that when I have a good sound system to play it back on.

Here's a group I'm digging - Royal Headache, out of Australia:

Very much a garage rock sound, but what I think sets them apart is the vocals. The lead singer has a really soulful voice, which comes through nice in the distorted echo of the production. I also pick up a few notes of brit-pop or even shoegaze.

So, I just got back from Bonnaroo.

Fucking Bonnaroo. I'll do my best to explain it/review the shows I saw.

I saw a total of 32 bands play (I also spent 20 minutes at a "silent disco" which was surreal, but fun). Here they are. I'll describe a few interesting/good/fun ones, and feel free to ask me about others. The ones in bold I saw for either the entire show or a good portion of it.

In pretty much chronological order:

The Cave Singers, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr, The Dirty Guv'Nahs, Yelawolf, Kendrick Lamar, Alabama Shakes, Big Gigantic, Tune-Yards, The Avett Brothers, Ludacris, St. Vincent, Radiohead, Major Lazer, Black Star, Flying Lotus, Flogging Molly, SBTRKT, Childish Gambino (AKA Trey from Community), Mogwai, Dispatch, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Skrillex, GZA with Grupo Fantasma backing him, ALO, Gary Clark Jr. The Black Lips, Here We Go Magic, We Are Augustines, The Antlers, Ben Folds Five, Bon Iver, The Shins, and Phish (who wrapped the festival up.

So I'll do a few "lists" since it is hard to say my favorite bands. Some bands sounded great, but I expected them to. Others sounded just okay, but put on a hell of a show. Some people totally knocked me on my ass.

"Sounded good" department.

Radiohead: No surprises (pun totally intended) here. These guys are just incredible. Thom Yorke's voice sounded amazing, they had great chemistry, an awesome light show, and fantastic stage presence. It was interesting that they only played two songs from OK Computer (Karma Police and Paranoid Android) and none from The Bends. They have pretty definitively stated that they prefer their more electronic stuff. Not a perfect set-list, but still really good. Highlights were Weird Fishes, Everything in its Right Place, Reckoner (fireworks went off during it), and Idioteque (I legit had a moment during it).

Bon Iver: May have been the best show in terms of quality. They were perfect, no other way to describe it. The band sounded impeccable, his voice was great, they looked like they were having fun etc. Maybe not my favorite show because I really enjoyed some of the more upbeat stuff, but they really sounded as good as possible.

SBTRKT: I didn't know much about him/them until seeing this show. He is sort of "post dub-step." A little "wub" but also some interesting samples and instruments. He played in open tent, and it was incredible how well the sound filled the room.

Mogwai: I am a huge post-rock fan, but they surpassed my expectations. I sort of fell into a trance watching them, and they flowed really well.

The Antlers: Another band I had never heard before. Another band I went into a trance watching.

Knocked me on my ass department.

Flying Lotus: A good candidate for my favorite show. His stuff is pretty low key at times, so I was curious how he would play. He kept a lot of his original sounds, but played them totally differently. Lots of loud, fast paced, aggressive music. He was also clearly having a blast. He was dancing everywhere, chugging whiskey, and generally causing a ruckus. I got all the way to the front few rows danced my fucking ass off. It was unreal. He started at around 2 am and didn't get off until past 3.

Big Gigantic: I sort of stumbled on them by chance, I had never heard of them before. It's a two man group. They play electronic/house music from a laptop, then one of the guys plays drums and the other plays sax. It was an amazing sound. The saxist was really impressive, I thought he was going to blow a lung out at one point. I stayed for the entire show, and had a fucking blast.

St. Vincent: She was crazy. Rocked hard on the guitar while still sounding really tight. I got my hands on a watergun during that show and got into pretty rowdy water fights with other people during the show. It was amazing.

Yelawolf: I sort of saw him as a joke. A white rapper from Alabama who is supposedly Eminem's "prodigy" who raps about meth? Why the hell not. In reality, he put on a sick show. His rhymes sounded incredibly grimey live, and he manipulated the audience to perfection. The covers he did were amazing, and his own raps were pretty sick too.

Skrillex: Need I say more? Say what you want about his music (I don't listen to it outside of the gym) but the man puts on a hell of a show. It was late (from 1:30-3 am) but you had to be in the right mind-set. I moshed and danced with everyone, and it was fucking wild. Unlike any show I have ever been at or ever will be at. He also had an amazing stage presence. He was jumping around with everyone else. The light show that was put on was also unreal, very professionally done.

I'll write more about some other bands (RHCP, Phish etc.) later.

I'm glad I got around to doing this while I'm still young. It was basically a six day commitment (about a 12 hour drive from D.C.) and not everyone has that time. I got almost no sleep (3-4 hours a night) in a tent that was cold when you went to bed, and scorching hot when you woke up. There was constant stimulation, and staying on your feet for 19-20 hours a day is fucking tiring. But, it was fucking unbelievable.

It never got that hot (only mid 80s compared to 100s last year) so that was really nice. It rained a little Saturday night and Sunday, but it was actually nice since it cleared the dust away.

This is going to sound weird, but one of the best things about the festival was the general vibe. All of the Bonnaroo literature hypes it up, but it just sounds goofy until you get there. It felt like sharing something big with the 80,000 other people who were there. We all had something in common, even though I would never in a million years talk to some of them on the street. I had tons of random/wild encounters that I wouldn't take back for the world. I day drank and smoked some weed, but didn't take any other drugs. I'd say about 50% of the people there were tripping/rolling though during some of the shows.

What was remarkable was how I didn't see a single altercation the entire time. It wasn't just that I didn't see or hear of any fistfights, I didn't see anything even resembling an argument. When 80,000 people get together, and most of them are high/drunk, you would think there would be a lot of disputes, but there weren't. Everybody was remarkably chill. Whenever I stepped on somebody's toe, or elbowed them in the face (Skrillex) they instantly laughed it off and accepted my apology. It really did have a remarkable vibe.

I have no idea if I'll ever go back or not. I like to think I will, but this could be my last time with the opportunity to.

Great stuff Charlie, that will be a great memory for you. I think what you mentioned about the lack of sleep and mayhem in the tent areas would kill it for me, and I sometimes don't like festivals because the sets are shorter than headline shows, but man, that sounds amazing. I may have to just suck it up one of these years.

This probably doesn't suit too many of y'all's tastes, but I haven't been able to get enough of these guys recently.

I saw them at Bonnaroo, and the saxist was awesome. He really was an amazing performer.

Man, talk about a dream team pairing. After some enticing rumors and teases of a potential collaboration between David Byrne and St. Vincent's Annie Clark, we now finally have some substantial details about their long-awaited full-length album.

I'm not sure how anyone with even a passing interest in indie rock wouldn't be squealing about this.
