Just to make you even more insane, Clap Hands Say Yeah played right after them. I caught a few songs, sounded good, but had to run.

Their last show pretty much. Two of the band members are leaving. I think the band will continue on without them but it will be different.

Back to The Hold Steady, my recent listening bender has reinforced my impression that the loss of Franz Nicolay was significant. His keyboards are a large part of what made their sound epic.

Yes, it was huge. As much fun as their shows are, it's very noticeable live. They tried out a new keyboard player at the beginning of last year, but he must not have stuck.

Saw Roger Waters do The Wall on Friday at Yankee Stadium.

I know so many people who have gone to see this show!

It was weird. It's not a show I sought out to see. It was kind of, "Hey, let's go." I have a weird relationship with Pink Floyd. I love David Gilmour but think Waters is a pretentious overrated douche. But how do you turn down a show that recreates the album that formed your childhood? So, all in all, it was fun.

Fenway Park, in Boston, is a lyric little bandbox of a ballpark. Everything is painted green and seems in curiously sharp focus, like the inside of an old-fashioned peeping-type Easter egg. It was built in 1912 and rebuilt in 1934, and offers, as do most Boston artifacts, a compromise between Man's Euclidean determinations and Nature's beguiling irregularities. - John Updike

I was looking around for some last-minute tickets, and the only official ones available were close to $300 for the floor. I could have looked around on Craigslist, and am sort of regretting not getting to see it, but I just didn't want to expend too much effort for it I guess.

What did they do with Gilmour's parts?

What is funny is that Waters is very political, anti-establishment and a complete pacifist. Fucker has no problem charging $170 for face value tickets, though! laugh2.gif Waters definitely had back track vocals. It was clear. And his band just filled Gilmour's role. Gilmour was missed.

In continuing with yet another week of amazing music in this glorious city, I am going to see the Dirty Projectors tonight. Never really listened before the latest burst of publicity surrounding the new album release tomorrow. I'm really intrigued by them, if for no other reason than I can't tell if they are ridiculous and weird for weird's sake, or if they're pushing the limits of what pop music can sound like in truly original ways. The vocals are really wild, at the very least. Should be cool.

Opening track on Bitte Orca, from the last album:

New single:

Pitchfork of course gave the new album a 9.zillion or whatever, but after that heated discussion here last week, I see that as being just too much of a stereotype at this point.

Also hoping to catch Andy's band beforehand! Will depend greatly on what time I can get out of here tonight.

Love them, or in some cases here....hate them.

But it's still pretty incredible that The Lumineers are now the #4 highest selling album on Itunes, moving ahead of people like Adele and Justin Bieber this week.

There were some on here saying they refuse to listen to them now because they got popular.

Well, I'm sold. Really a good show. For me, it's the vocals that do it. Especially the jarring and elaborate three-part female harmonies that are alternatively bright, weird, and eerie. Coupled with some weird percussion and some guitar work that has clear jazz influences. They kind of remind me of some early-80s new wave at times, though I can't place exactly who.

And metalheads, I'm trying. I gave Dimmu Borgir's Death Cult Armageddon an honest listen last night. I didn't hate it, and I liked some of the guitar work, but it wasn't my thing. Way too string-heavy for me. I also just don't like the growling, unintelligible vocals.

But also screw you because Rock and roll McDonald's will be the soundtrack in my head for a week now.

So (somewhat) predictably Pitchfork gave Frank Ocean's album Channel Orange a rave review. I'm about to put it on, so I'll see what I think.

Meh, it's ok I guess. Then again, I'm not a R&B fan at all. This just isn't really my type of music, so I'm not the right guy to review it.

Yeah, I guess that could influence you in a big way. I dunno I really, really like it, but always liked his stuff with Odd Future too.

Plus I'm coming off a huge D'Angelo kick, which helps, since he is planning to release an album eventually and is touring again.

Heard this couple last night at Dreamaway Lodge music festival. This was written in 1947 by Woody Guthrie. The song was never recorded. They were asked to add music and record it.It's going to be on an album of Woody Guthrie songs performed by Dylan, Pete Seeger ,among others. The album is being released for 100th anniv of Guthrie's birth. There's a bunch of planned events this year in recognition.

Haven't listened to it in years, just did and I'm surprised how well And Justice for All held up.

Kill Em All > Ride the Lightning > And Justice > Master of Puppets > ugh

Alright guys, you know my musical tastes, got iTunes cards for bday, give me some must haves

From this year? Ugh. So little. My favorite album of the year is still Andrew Bird's Break It Yourself but it's definitely not for everyone. (It is an album that gets better everytime you listen to it though and I went from thinking it was just okay to loving it and thinking it's amazing over the course of a month. I.e., If you're not sure after a single listen, listen to it three or four more time.)

The new Fiona Apple is pretty damn good all the way through.

I also think Delta Spirit's self-titled album is pretty acessible and good all the ay through.

SATS, you mentioned earlier in the thread that you like the Lumineers and Japandroids, right? In the same vein of the former, you might try Old Crow Medicine Show's catalog (new album coming on in a few months, but I like their self-titled debut or the second album Big Iron World best so far). OCMS is touring with the Lumineers right now, in fact. The Head and the Heart, Blind Pilot, and Mumford and Sons are all considered kindred spirits of Lumineers too. For acts similar to Japandroids, try the Hold Steady, especially Stay Positive or Boys and Girls in America, or Titus Andronics' The Monitor, all of which I absolutely fucking love.

My top three so far this year are Andrew Bird, Fiona, and the Dirty Projectors album - I'm kind of flipping out about how cool the last one is, in fact. Killer Mike (R.A.P. Music) and El-P (Cancer for Cure) are #4 and #5 with a bullet.

Speaking of the last two, caught their show Friday night and it was great. They have a great stable of rappers going right now, with Mr. Motherfuckin Exquire (shut up, I know) and Despot. I was already digging Mike's album going into the show, and that guy holds it down live. Not too often that you see a crowd at a rap show chanting "Fuck Ronald Reagan". El-P won me over too. His stuff has more of a synth, ominous sound to it. All of them had a lot of energy throughout the show. One of the dudes from Das Racist came out to guest-rap on El-P's "True Story." Good time for sure.

You got that order mixed up there, buddy boy, at least if you meant chronologically. That's cause for the death penalty in some circles.

This may be sacrilegious, but I like Justice For All better too. I think it's more sophisticated. That said, on a list of my ten favorite Metallica songs. "Orion" is numbers 1 to 11.

Check out Mastodon's cover of Orion on the disc I made you. Also more of an RTL fan now but Justice got me into metal.

Have you guys heard of "And Justice For Newstead" which is a version of the album remixed so that you can actully fucking hear the bass on equal footing? I haven't heard the whole thing but the bits that I have heard are fantastic.

Just watched Halford - Live at Rock in Rio 3. Great DVD but it was awesome watching the crowd sing Breakin the Law for Rob. He just held out the mic and they took over, beautiful.
