Melody Gardot. She's got a good video on YouTube (which I can't get to here at work) for "Baby I'm a Fool."

Silversun Pickups 'Swoon' is available and so far (5 songs in), I will be looking to pick this up in either CD or Vinyl format..very good so far..they pick up right where they left off with Carnavas but a bit edgier. I heard one of their songs on the radio recently and it was the first time in years that I heard a song on the "modern rock" station and thought, "damn, this is good." I thought it had a bit of a shoegazey vibe to it, and then I watched the video and the drummer is going crazy like the drummer from My Bloody Valentine. Lately I've been listening to a lot of Xasthur. I just found a Rainer Maria CD in a box in a closet that I hadn't listened to in a good 8 years (the CD, not the closet), so it's been black metal and some pretty wussy indie rock for me lately. |

This album, to me, sounds like what the Smashing Pumpkins could have sounded like if Corgan stopped trying so hard to be an artist. Thank you! I think the only difference is that the Pickups exude modern cool (casual indifference) where the Pumpkins had early 90s cool (abject depression). They're practically a clone band. That said, the Pickups sound great, and that's all that matters. -------------------- Batman uses women for sex and tactical advantages.

You can download Wilco doing a cover of the Woody Guthrie song "Jolly Banker". It is free to download but they suggest a donation to the Woody Guthrie Archives. The song is great and very appropriate today. Here is the link:

To make an attempt at wrapping my head around some of the most ridiculous drumming in the history of the instrument, I purchased the first two UK albums this week.
UK from 1978 which featured Bill Bruford and than 1979's Danger Money which featured Terry Bozzio. Was never a real big prog-head by design of my attention span, but damn. This is some playing. According the Wiki page, UK was basically formed out of an ill-fated late 70's attempt by Bruford to reform King Crimson. Pretty cool. |

Just reacquired... This album came out in 1980 when I was....18. I couldn't have loved it more. Billy Gibbons at his best. What was surprising to me was how much I didn't like them after that. They added a bunch of synthesizers and came across as more of a Pop Band. Too bad for me, but they went and made shitloads of money. Good for them! |

I don't have that one, but all I know its Volta kicks ass. Is homogenic work checking out? Upon first listen, I have it ranked up with my favorite albums. There's just so much to it, and it's extremely well-done. We'll see how it holds up, but I have a good feeling about it. -------------------- One long pure beautiful road of pain

It's amazing how they haven't written a new album in years, given that they only have one song. I love it, slow, heavy and all about war but they only have one song really. I wish more bands used that guitar tone.

I have tried and tried and tried and tried and even tried some more - but I cannot for the life of me listen to bands whose lead singer growls like that..just cannot do it..the music is great though usually, which is why I keep trying. This. A perfect example of this is Slipknot's All Hope Is Gone. I always liked their "music" but the vocals just turned me off. Now I have the best of both worlds. I'm sure "real" Slipknot fans said they "sold out", but I love the album. See also Killswitch Engage The End of Heartache...Which begs the question: Is their latest stuff like End of Heartache? -------------------- ![]() |

Yusuf/Cat Stevens. He just released a new album, Roadsinger. He was on 'Colbert' last night and he did a beautiful version of this song. I hope it shows up on YouTube soon.
My father introduced me to Stevens' music. He sat me down as a child and played his records for me. Dad was right, tho'. His music has always moved me. His name may be Yusuf now, but this song is classic "Cat Stevens". -------------------- QUOTE When a man tells you that he got rich through hard work, ask him: 'Whose?' --Don Marquis (1878 - 1937) |

I'm not a fan of live bootlegs, for me the music is all about sound quality, and I find that suffers with bootlegs to the point where it's not really fun to watch them.

Dude, if you dig them, you really, really need to check out Tenhi. I've been plugging the shit out of them for a while on here, but people haven't really responded (probably because the rest of the stuff that I like is Satanic black metal). Tenhi is really similar to Sigur Ros in terms of general musical feel, and every bit as talented. If Sigur Ros were from Finland instead of Iceland, they'd be Tenhi, I think. Tell me you don't see the similarities, I dare you. -------------------- One long pure beautiful road of pain

Besides conventionally playing their instuments (Jonsi uses a bow to play his guitar, and in some songs the basist of Sigur Ros has actually used a drum stick to play), having lyrics in an actual language, and having an overall darker feel they are very very similar.
That being said, Sigur Ros, for me at least, has always been a rejection of modern rock principles. They are just off the wall. They will do anyting. I feel this has the same feel as in type of music, but they are much more conventional than Sigur Ros. There is no denying the talent between the two bands, but they just don't seem as similar as I thought they would be. Listen to Gobbldigook, Hafsol (on Hvarf not on Von) and Ny Batteri and I think you will agree with me that they seem similar, but in the end they are different. Again I will check out more of Tenhi because they seem awesome. -------------------- |

What, Finnish isn't a conventional language?
No, I definitely recognize the differences, but I think that Tenhi are sorta linked in the "rejection of conventional principles" aspect. And once you start hearing stuff off of Maaaet, you'll see how dark Tenhi can be. Either way, we're in for some really cool listening ahead. Tenhi changed the way that I look at music. -------------------- One long pure beautiful road of pain

Heh I listen to waaay to much Sigur Ros to know their lyrics are mostly in Hopelanic a language they made up Definitely want to check them out they seem pretty cool. -------------------- |

Just thought it was in Icelandic, or something. That's what I'm listening to now, actually. -------------------- One long pure beautiful road of pain

Nope. That and Von are completely made up sounds to form Hopelandic. Really crazy stuff. Just goes to show how little I care about lyrics if I can't understand them. Years of listening to metal, I suppose. I still despise the trite stuff played on the radio, so if I can understand the lyrics, then they have to be intelligent and well-thought out. There are translations of Tenhi's stuff around, and I love that the lyrics are as dark and intelligent as the music, not whining about issues with parents and girlfriends. -------------------- One long pure beautiful road of pain

The lyrics are meant not be part of the whole ensemble here not taken apart. They are supposed to be appreciated not picked apart. That is why I love listening to them because you focus on the whole not the parts. -------------------- |

Finnish is usually drunker than most conventional languages. Just ask Impaled Nazarene.

Yeah, that's exactly how they are in a lot of metal, and that's sorta the mindset shift that's needed to appreciate metal- many people say that they like (X aspect), but "can't get over the vocals." It's just another instrument, to me, as it has been for the past 7 or 8 years, so for the most part what is actually being said is irrelevant. It's just a bonus when there are actually thought-provoking, intelligent lyrics. -------------------- One long pure beautiful road of pain

For me (and maybe it's because I've been singing my whole life), I cannot ignore the vocalist or allow him or her to fade into the mix. For you guitarists/bassists/drummers out there, can you say the same, or is it just me? On Edit: RE: The language, and the "content" of the lyrics: I can ignore them and appreciate the singing. I don't care about politics...I mean Serj Tankian screams FUCK YOU, PIG! on "Mister Jack" and love that song... This post has been edited by Bavoo: May 18 2009, 03:05 PM -------------------- ![]() |
