One of the best things about being awake in the middle of the night is songs like this just don't sound the same in the daytime.

I love that song, but unfortunately can't hear it any more without remembering that it was used in a VW coomercial....a cool commercial, but a commercial nonetheless.

The flipside of that is that I had no idea who Nick Drake was until I saw that commercial.

There are plenty of odious examples of rock and folk songs being using in a completely inappropriate way for commercial benefit, to the point where it's almost comical. (See, e.g., the use of "Lust for Life," a song about a heroin addict, being used for Royal Caribbean) With that one, though, I think that VW at least tried to honor the spirit of the music. I remember seeing that commercial, saying, "I need to find out who that is," and then subsequently buying his music.

"Beautiful World" by Devo, for Target a few years ago, cracks me up in particular.

And there was that Metlife commercial with the retarded boy and his sister and the Cheerios that was on for years (especially during Rangers games) that used Nick's "Mayfair"

I guess that commercial was tastefully done, but still, he made three incredible albums which no one appreciated at the time while he was suffering from major depression, killed himself, then 30 years later everyone realizes what genius they were and he becomes popular and someone or other (his siblings?) sells his music to commercials. Kind of uncomfortable.

I think his parents are the ones who own his rights. I read an interview where they had attempted for years to protect his privacy from visitors to their home etc. I'm guessing in their late years, they could use the money.

I'm a big fan of British Folk music starting with Richard Thompson/Fairport Convention... and Drake is to me...a great mood... Pretty weird for a depressed soul huh?

I've always loved "Man in a Shed" Kind of folky with a Charlie Brown piano backup.

Edit: Couldn't Imbed the other version. This one is without Piano

Holy shit man, you just took me back to high school. I used to love DMX. His first two albums were really damn good. The third one...where that particular song was from...was good too but not on the same level as the first two. In my opinion, that was the start of the decline of hip-hop. There wasn't much afterwards that really stood out for me with the one exception of Jay-Z's 'The Blueprint'; which I still say is one of the greatest hip-hop albums of all-time.

WHOOOSH! wink.gif

I know the Arctic Monkeys. I love those guys. "Fake Tales of San Francisco" is teh shite!

I used that specific line from that song to illustrate, yet again, why being a teenage girl=crazy person. They're so blinded by how "cute" the Jonas Bros. are, they can't hear how much suckitude there is in their music. I'd love to see the Arctic Monkeys beat the crap out of them, just for shites and giggles. I guarantee that when those girls grow up, and go back and listen to the Jonas Bros., they're going to be so embarrassed that they used to love them so much. Not that I've ever experienced that kind of revelation. blush.gif whistle.gif

This is them doing "Fake Tales" live. All-some! Yeah, I'll be learning this one on my guitar.

Funny -- I've been on a Jane's Addiction kick since I got back from Death Valley where we sang Jane Says around the camp fire. Far and away the most awesome song of the night.

I'm listening to the new Dinosaur Jr album, Farm, and so far it's at last as good as their last album, Beyond. In other words, fucking awesome.

Also, if you have headphones on and want to listen to the awesome sound of your own death for a while, check out Svarte Greiner. Awesomely dark, surreal ambient music from Norway. As I was listening to it I thought to myself, "David Lynch would like this," then I looked down and saw he was one of Greiner's top friends so, there you go.

I would love to listen to that, sounds like it's right up my alley, but the myspace player is not working for me right now. I see they also have Paavoharju in their top friends. Their album "Yhä hämärää" is, as far as I'm concerned, the album of the decade. "Laula laakson kukista" is pretty damn great, too. So while you're over there listening to Svarte Greiner, click on Paavoharju and give them a listen.

Cool -- Will do. The other two recommendations that came along with Svarte Greiner, were Elegi and Kreng. I haven't had a chance to check either out because I'm really really digging the new Dinosaur Jr at the moment.

Excellent, Kind of ethereal music.

Dinosaur Jr. still sounds relevant after all of these years. Almost Ready reminds me of early Foo Fighters.

I never consciously listened to Janes Addiction until I saw them open for Iggy Pop at the Beacon Theatre. They were real freaky LA androgynous and a little too much for many in the crowd with this strange gyrating, half gay singer, but I couldn't believe the guitar style of Dave Navarro. The way he played was just outrageous. It was one of the best guitar performances I had ever seen live. You could barely hear Perry behind the richness of the sound. Just awesome.

Makes me wish that I'd gotten to see them - they played a club by my house about two months or so ago. They were great when I saw them at Lollapalooza in '93.

Finding untitled mix CDs from when I was a college DJ is hilarious. Among the "gems" we aired:

My co-DJ and I can still annoy his wife by bursting out into that song.

I gave in and downloaded the Flaming Lips Yoshimi album to see what the fuss was about. Let's see.

(Edit: Also, Dark Night of the Soul)

Wow, it took 45 seconds for me to start loving this album. I'm an idiot for not listening to this sooner. Is the whole album this good?
