I have been listening to a decent amount of the Replacements recently, mostly stuff from Tim and Pleased to Meet Me. I recently read an Onion article about the most memorable musical performances on SNL and the Replacements came in at number 5. Has anyone here ever seen that performance? It is not on the web anywhere. Apparently they were drunk (as usual) and cursing during the broadcast. For some reason I really want to see this right now.

Wow, it took 45 seconds for me to start loving this album. I'm an idiot for not listening to this sooner. Is the whole album this good?

It's pretty darn good although I do prefer the first half of the album. In the Morning of the Magicians is my fav tune on there. Just relistened to it and it's so good.

It wavers up and down. The first two tracks are great. Yoshimi 1 is weird in a good way, Yoshimi 2 is kinda weird in a bad way. The other stuff isn't sticking out in my head, and then I love Do You Realize? Dunno. I'm mixed on the album in the end, I think.

I loved Dinosaur Jr when I was in high school but stopped listening after Green Mind because they lost their sound without Lou Barlow. So in listening to the new song, I thought that was as well as they've sounded since Barlow left. The reason for that, in confirming with Wikipedia, is because it's the original band again on the last two albums. Now I have two albums to add to my to-get list. They really sound awesome.

For metal fans that don't actually like metal -- not sure of what genre they fall into -- the new Killswitch Engage album is out. I like the new song.

I've been on a 'Mats kick too lately. Yeah, I heard of the SNL segment in question....supposedly one of them threw or dropped his guitar mid song.

This might be me? I like hard rock but the majority of metal I listen to just makes me laugh. I checked out Mastodon (again) because everyone is raving about how amazing their new album is and I made it maybe 3 minutes before I started laughing and had to stop.

But, Silver Sun Pickups, Death From Above 1979, Dead Confederate, etc... All awesome. We need more hard rock like this.

Dino Jr. seems to fit the the "Alternative" description perfectly. Not as heavy as metal, but not "New wave" (Is that term still used?).

I'd put them into the same genre as older Pumpkins, Bush and oddly enough, The Black Keys (without the snarl and distortion...Keys Lite LOL)

You know, it's funny you mention the Sirius hip-hop channels because today I heard something that made me severly depressed. I had it on BackSpin...which is, as we all SHOULD know by now, the station for older, classic hip-hop. Well, on my way back to the office, I heard Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg's 'The Next Episode'.

...

I bought that CD when it came out in 1999. NINETEEN NINETY-NINE. Now, either I'm getting old or they're getting a little soft on the whole classic hip-hop thing. Granted it's a good song but damn did I feel old when I heard that.

Right now, I have Sublime's '40 oz to Freedom' in. Good shit.

With the news that Faith No More is back together (touring Europe this summer) minus the axe-wielder turned pumpkin farmer, Jim Martin, who is the record holder for having grown the 235th largest pumpkin ever, at 1,064 lbs, I have been digging through FNM and the stylings of Mr.Mike Patton. Here are a few of my favorite collaborations in which Patton was involved:

Awesome collaboration album between Mike Patton and the X-Ecutioners

An even better collaboration with many artists including Massive Attack, Kool Keith, Norah Jones, Rahzel, Kid Koala, Dan the Automator and Amon Tobin. Released under the name Peeping Tom,this album is an interesting trip-hop style record and really finds a way to use the collaborators talents. But leave it to Mike Patton to get Norah Jones to tantalize your ears with the following lines in her sultriest of voices :

There's one for every minute sucker, sucker
So keep it in your pants, will ya sucker, sucker
What makes you think you're my only lover
The truth kinda hurts, don't it mother fucker

and YAY, youtube has it

Happy Fourth!

I hope for the radio listeners, they cut out the first 1:30 seconds or so of silence on the opening of 'Since'.

Different. Different in the sense it that it has only one real rockin song. This isnt to say the others are bad.On a typical album, they'll have 8-9 rockers with 1-2 slow start/strong finish songs or even a ballad or something that resembles one for them. I'm still listening to it trying to figure out a way to really articulate the way the album sounds, but in layman's terms, it has quite a bit of slow start/slow finish or strong finish songs. Omar described it as their acoustic album. Not in acoustic in the sense we think of say, the MTV Unplugged Series but acoustic enough for them.

If you like 'Since We've Been Gone", you'd dig 'With Twilight As My Guide'. Most of the album, if not all is on Youtube as well as other places. If your a fan of TMV, I can't see you not enjoying it. Check out Cotopaxi (I think I posted the You Tube clips of these before, so check them out).Enjoy - let me know what you think.

Oh - and the majority of the feedback and ambient crap they play before and between songs is mostly gone on on this album - While some it is important to the music, on this album it's not missed. Omar's guitar playing is also much less experimental and much more straightforward but very effective.

You ever hear a song that you haven't heard in a long time, a song you once liked, and you now realize that it is such a truly awful abortion of sound that it makes you reevaluate everything about your life? How could I have once thought this was good? Who was that person? Was that really me? Is this who I've really been for the last 36 years?

Anyway, thanks for the weekend full of existential depression, "Just Can't Get Enough" by Depeche Mode.

Mercyful Fate's Melissa and Don't Break the Oath...

Wow...I had really forgotten how much I used to enjoy these two albums!

I like the Nuns EP too...I really like King's vocal range and the guitar range (being a huge Priest fan, that's not surprising as I find the sounds similar).

How is their reunion stuff? With all of the replacement players, I assume not as good, but you never know...anyone?

Listening to David Dye and the World Cafe right now, and he's rolling out so much good stuff that I'm having a hard time keeping up. He's playing the new Spoon, some Morphine, some Black Keys (I know that's older, but I never really gave their stuff a listen). Someone here is a Morphine fan, right? Anyway, The World Cafe is a great show, highly recommended for those of you who can catch it on your NPR affiliates or other public radio stations. It's carried on WFUV in the New York area.

And, just as I say that, he whips out "Hey Jealousy." Ugh.

I also saw that Son Volt just released their latest last week, will definitely have to give that a listen. They're on a fairly extensive North American tour, just picked up a ticket for their show at Irving Plaza in September.

Happend to me the other day as well as I was raving to someone in my car about how good a station 101.9 RXP is in New York. Of course, as soon as I tune in to prove my point "Too Much" by Dave Matthews is on the air.. but than Pinfield follows that with Iggy and the Stooges, the Smiths, and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Which proved my point.

He is in Philly, isn't he. Is it broadcast from your building?

You ever hear a song that you haven't heard in a long time, a song you once liked, and you now realize that it is such a truly awful abortion of sound that it makes you reevaluate everything about your life? How could I have once thought this was good? Who was that person? Was that really me? Is this who I've really been for the last 36 years?

Anyway, thanks for the weekend full of existential depression, "Just Can't Get Enough" by Depeche Mode.

On the flipside, though, "Never Let Me Down Again" is as awesome as it ever was.

Nah, but it's like 10 blocks away. I've driven past it a couple times.

I have been listening to alot of JD as well recently. I have the 180 gram vinyl re-issues of Unknown Pleasures and Closer and the mixes on these are dynamite. I do not know which of the two albums are better. Right now I am thinking Closer but that can change.

Personally I like Closer better but it changes about every week. Still is very good and deserves some recognition.

Still is not as cohesive as the others due to the odds and ends nature of it. Plus the recording engineer fucked up and missed the first few verses of "Ceremony" (which is an awesome, awesome song).

My personal favorite JD songs are not on any of the albums ("Atmosphere" and "Love Will Tear Us Apart").

I'm listening to Sufjan Stevens and enjoying it. I'm sure in the long run I will pay for this karmically.

Which album? Seven Swans was the first one I heard so I am a bit partial to that. The two state albums are pretty good too. Sufjan Stevens is the only person that falls into a kind of Christian type artist that I can really listen too.

Illinois. I'm only 7 songs in, and not entirely paying attention, but it's really pleasant to listen to.

I prefer Unknown Pleasures but only slightly. Disorder and Shadowplay get me every time. Means to an End on Closer.

"Shadowplay" is a good song. Have you heard The Killers' cover version? Not so good.

Did you see Control and 24 Hour Party People? I enjoyed both movies, 24 Hour Party People was a bit more fun to watch because it was kind of a comedy. Anthony Wilson is such a dynamic character. I have picked up a few used Factory records LPs and they are amongst the most beautifully packed pieces of music I own. My favorite Anthony Wilson story is when he was told that he was going to lose money on every "Blue Monday" single they sold and he responded that no one was really going to buy it anyway. It was the best selling 12 inch ever in England.
