I don't think it's scientifically possible to grow any bigger than it already is.

Day 6, 16lbs., 3" off the waist. Claudia's lost 12, I think. Insanely hard diet that we're stopping after tomorrow (7 days). Super-effective, but pretty damn miserable. I'm going to Atkins, which I've had success with previously. It's so tempting that if I just stuck with this the rest of the month I'd be done, but man, not eating food at all is really tough. I'll just consider this a great jump start to a slower, saner diet.

BTW, if anyone's skeptical of Atkins or severe low-carb diets, the New England Journal of Medicine has determined they're more effective and healthier than low-calorie diets. With caveats, of course. http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa022207

I have made a complete lifestyle change in the past year in keeping with this theory. Fat is a completely efficient energy source provided you're not a body builder.

Its nearly impossible to avoid carbs completely, but if you can avoid carbs with a high glycemic index (basically any and all processed carbs) you're doing great. Insulin spikes are the enemy and not something the human body was designed for nor is evolving for, hence diabetes and pancreatic cancers and such.

EDIT: Oh I meant to tell you Chris, I've finally gotten around to scheduling the free class at the Crossfit place by me. Going next Thursday. Got four more 1/2 sessions with my PT left and I'll be signing up for it after I'm done. My PT has been putting me through a lot of crossfit style exercises (kettlebell swings, dead lifts, push presses, etc.) and I'm enjoying it so far. Can't wait to see what this will be like.

I gained a pound this past week. But I'll be coaching soccer 3 nights a week for the next couple of months so I think the trend will reverse. it's nice seeing a 1 as the first number on the scale. Total weight loss # is 29lbs (was 30)

Not that lbs on the scale going down is a bad thing, but it shouldn't be your sole focus.

I don't do weight watchers or anything but I do play hockey 2-3, about 10 miles/90 minutes a week on the eliptical, and lift free weights 2-3 times a week.

After months of this I have lost maybe 3 pounds, but I've lost 2" on my waist and gained a good amount of muscle, and I at least feel like I have actually picked up a step in my game - a nice achievement when you're my age - and that's what I care about.

Excellent, guys! Keep it up!

I actually have seemed to lose inches and it's becoming rather noticeable. My jeans are getting very big on me, and when I was in Vegas I went shopping for a new dress at a store I'm a regular at. I always buy a large because that's what I fit into...it was TOO big! I haven't been a medium in this store in years, and it felt SO good. I lost weight with my stomach flu last week, too. Not that it's my ideal way of losing weight (or anyone's for that matter).

I still train Gi BJJ two days a week, no-gi submission grappling two days a week, and at least one day a week of kickboxing.

If you're located in Westchester, Fairfield, Queens or the Bronx, I can recommend an excellent school.

I've basically kept sixty pounds off since I started BJJ.

It is hands down the best work out regimen I've ever tried and that includes working with a personal trainer. Unfortunately as I was winding down the foundations class I caught sick and had to shut down pretty much all physical activity for almost 6 weeks due to two bouts of respiratory infection. I just went back today for the first time and holy shit it was brutal. Gonna take me a bit to get back into the swing of things.

Where's the school? My friend teaches jeet kune do at a school in Whitestone and he's been trying to get me to attend.

I used to be big into crossfit, but the injury rates for doing it are through the roof and sometimes pretty catastrophic (like severe rhabdo). It'll build muscle and endurance like crazy, but the long-term cost is pretty significant.

My latest kick has been Vinyasa yoga. It won't do that much for cardio, but it's been the healthiest way to build muscle that I've come across, and it does it very safely. It's awesome as a counterpart to jiu jitsu, especially, because it'll work a lot of the rolling-related kinks out.

I can see how that would be. There's a mentality to push yourself as much as possible and couple that with trainers who may or may not be experienced. Not sure what NYS requires for licensing of personal trainers but I don't think these guys have anything other than the crossfit certification. Personally, I'm doing the workouts as best as I can but I'm not overdoing it with weights. I'm not doing more than I can handle.

All that ever happens is my BJJ injury rate goes up. So much so that ultimately these days I roll like 2x a month. And what do I have for it all? A real nice cauliflower ear on the left side.

Seriously though as I get older I go to the gym a few days a week and try to walk. Am I in great shape? Nope but I keep the old heart pumping

Can anyone recommend a good doorframe pull up bar? I don't want to shell out for one of those towers but all the doorframe pullup devices I've seen have poor reviews from other users.

I have one that I bought at like a Sportsmarts, Dicks, Modells, or somewhere like that. It has no sticker with a name on it but i remember it being only like $30.00. I used for a while before it joined the heap of other workout stuff that I didnt use for very long.

BTW, if anyone's skeptical of Atkins or severe low-carb diets, the New England Journal of Medicine has determined they're more effective and healthier than low-calorie diets. With caveats, of course. http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa022207

So about a month and a half ago, I started thinking about Atkins and losing weight. I was 215lbs - heaviest I've ever been. I really wanted to jump start things so I went 3 days with little to no carbs at all - no fruit even. Just lean protein/eggs/bacon and salad (veggies actually do have some carbs). Then I started reading about Paleo/Primal eating, where you basically do not eat anything other than what a caveman could get his hands on. Fruit/veggies/meat/nuts/seeds and greek yogurt . No milk/cheese. I've switched to this method of eating. I have not had pasta/pizza/bread of any kind for a month and half - I have pretzels a few times but that was early on.

One thing I noticed is that I feel full quicker, eat less overall because I feel satisfied with the food I've eaten and I rarely get those strong hunger pangs anymore. Not to mention my energy levels are way higher - no afternoon tiredness. I used to have to eat first thing in the morning - that's gone as well. I make it to noon or so every day on coffee - 2 cups.

I really thought I would miss bread and pasta and cereal. I do miss bread once in awhile - but have withheld eating it. I try to ride my bike 3-5 miles every other day and just do basic push-ups/ crunches/reverse crunches and light dumbbell work on the other days. I've lost 16 lbs so far and feel great.

While I don't necessarily follow every theory or methos that Mark Sisson presents, but I have to say I like the approach he preaches.

I used to be big into crossfit, but the injury rates for doing it are through the roof and sometimes pretty catastrophic (like severe rhabdo). It'll build muscle and endurance like crazy, but the long-term cost is pretty significant.

Is Crossfit similar to the P90X or the related Insanity workouts? Is it about muscle confusion?

Yep - and when they opened the back of the truck, a woolly mammoth would carry out the pallets and say something to the effect of, "eh - it's a living!"

I think what it really comes down to is, the more actual nutrients (not "enriched" with vitamins, etc.) the food you eat contains, the more fuel your body gets out of it. Your body's more satisfied, so your more satisfied. The obesity epidemic we face is due (I believe-nothing scientific) to eating more and more junk--food sans nutrients. You eat junk food--your body digests it but doesn't get the nutrition it needs. Result? You still feel hungry. So you go eat more junk. And then more junk, because you're still hungry. Next thing you know, you weigh 800 lbs. and can't get out of your house. Happens all the time.

I don't think carbs, or cheese or whatever really matters. The higher the quality is of the food you eat, the less likely you are to overeat.

Glad to bow. That shit is fantastic.

My neighbor gave us a batch of homemade peach jam. I scoop a tablespoon of it into a cup of the Fage 0% and it is AMAZING. Still, the best way to eat the yogurt is near frozen cold with a tablespoon of honey and some crushed walnuts. Ooof. I could eat it all day.

Oh and if you like tzatziki (the greek yogurt dip with garlic and cucumber), the Fage 0% is great for it. It's already got very little water left in it so you don't really have to strain it anymore (I actually strain it overnight anyway because you're going to add moisture to it with the cucumber). Shred the cucumber and dry it between paper towels. Get as much moisture out of the cucumber as you can. Helps if you scoop out the seeds and the soft meat before you shred. Crush up as much or as little fresh garlic as per your taste. I wouldn't go less than two cloves though. I usually put in five or six for a medium sized batch, but I love the dip to be strong. Add some salt and chill it for a few hours. Then take a spoon and go to town.

Crushed walnuts is one of my favorites to add to any of them. We usually get Voskos, but have been meaning to try Fage. Have not tried it almost frozen but I may throw one in the freezer for a couple hours before lunch today.

And yes - I'll definitely try the tzatziki - thanks man.

Lately we've been getting Chobani just because it's what BJs or Costco has. But I do get local honey that's just phenomenal.

Yeah we got the Chobani case from BJ's once. I don't like it though because I prefer to add fruit or honey on my own to the cup. I wish they'd sell the plain yogurt at BJ's. It's great but expensive. Maybe I need to take a page from my dad's book and make my own.

Oh, we get the big containers - those are plain yogurt. I also prefer to add my own mix-ins.

If you come up for the Greek festival, I'll try to score you some of the honey that I mentioned earlier. Easily the best I've ever had.

I buy the Fage combos. I love the honey/yogurt combo but the honey is so sweet (I wait until it's room temperature) that a teaspoonful mixed with all the yogurt is enough. I eat the remaining honey because I hate to waste anything. So of course, it's obvious now, it makes a lot more sense to buy plain yogurt and add my own honey or whatevs. banghead.gif

I don't like any flavored Chobani. Maybe I should just go with the plain variety, too.
