So here is the latest animal my wife brought home. She almost hit this one by my in-laws. We currently have 2 in-house cats and 4 strays we take care of - she has had the females fixed. The two females are actually a other and daughter and the father is one of the 4. We recently had what appears to be a Maine Coon start showing up to round out the 4.

This guy is very friendly - wants desparately to come into the house and is great with the girls but we are hesistating with our two indoor cats. So in the garage he stays. To me he looks like he has some greyhound in him, but his bark would indicate some sort of hound.Maybe someshephard also.. We put out flyers today and spoke with some neighbors i the area where we found him. Hope we find his home soon. Jennifer, my 5 year old has named him Brownie.

Fenway Park, in Boston, is a lyric little bandbox of a ballpark. Everything is painted green and seems in curiously sharp focus, like the inside of an old-fashioned peeping-type Easter egg. It was built in 1912 and rebuilt in 1934, and offers, as do most Boston artifacts, a compromise between Man's Euclidean determinations and Nature's beguiling irregularities. - John Updike

Funny you mention his nails - I noticed that they look like they have been cut recently - all the more reason I don't think he was abandoned. We have alot of animals abandoned around here in the last year or so...

And yes Jen, he did have that collar, but no tags. We are using that collar as one of his identifying features should someone call for him.

Oh wow. He's adorable and so friendly-looking. I hope he wasn't abandoned. It's been happening to pets nationwide. I hope, for his sake, that his family comes soon. Sounds like his temp family is sure a nice one, tho. biggrin.gif

That may in fact happen if we don't hear anything after a week or so. Wife took him this morning to see if he had a chip, but nothing. Will be tough to let this guy go if we do.

Hardest part of keeping him would be integrating him with the cats.

Received a phone call this morning from someone who swore the description in the ad we ran in paper matched this dog. About an hour later, Lex (his name wasn't really Brownie???) was reunited with his grandparents. The grandparents were watching the dog for their daughter who is in the process of moving down here.

They are extremely happy to have him back as they thought for sure he had been hit and was in doggie heaven. Bittersweet ending for us as we were beginning to get attached, so it was probably best that we found his home rather than in a week when we for sure would have been attached.

Happy Days!!

So here is our newest member, Max. Max started showing up a few weeks ago with the other 2 strays we take care of. Max is a neutered dude who had to have been someone's pet. Super friendly and is great with the kids. He is living in the garage for now as he has ear mites. Once the mites are gone, he may move into the house depending on how well our other cat Charlie, accepts him. He is tired in these pics - this was after we took him to the vet to get checked out and to see if he was micro chipped. He wasn't.

But, we found out this morning that the Humane Society will accept him after meeting with him and verifying whether or not not he can truly be adopted. There is no doubt in my mind they will accept him, just a matter of when. So for now he stays with us. We are always happy to hear the HS will accept the animals we find as they are a no-kill shelter and he will stay there until adopted.

Hi Max! smile.gif

That's awesome dude! The wife and I rescued a cat last month and our friend took her in. We want to do this more often but its hard when the only place we can put the rescue is in the basement which we can't access from within in the apartment. Its ok for short term, but I wouldn't want to leave a cat down there long term with only a few hours of contact from me and my wife. We're eventually going to take over her mother's home and plan on totally gutting and revamping the inside of the house. Part of the plan include turning the basement into a romper room/family room with one of the back rooms being converted into a small cat shelter. Then the real rescuing can begin!

As a matter of fact we just got back from his new home. One of the volunteers at the Humane Society took him. She has a few other cats and she was happy to add him to her family. She gave us her number so we can check on him or even visit if we would like.

I love when these situations go easy like this. We love you buddy, take care!

When we brought a greyhound into the house we had 2 indoor cats who've had the run of the house for 15 yrs. and it worked out nicely. She will growl at them a little and nip at them if she feels they're in her space (the couch) but they're alone in the house all day and we haven't come home to find mangled cats. They co-exist nicely. I'll bet you won't have an issue.

Found this guy this morning walking around in the pouring rain. Wife saw him at 8:30 this morning but we had to get the kids to school. Found him a few hours later and brought him home. This dude is so laid back and mellow, if his owners don't turn up, we may keep him. We've called every number on his tags and even have the homeowners number and no contact with them yet. One of the neighbors said they thought the owner moved to St Pete - about an hour south of us. Would hate if they left him behind, but it may be for the best if the owner was really willing to ditch him. But my guess is he got out and got lost. His name is Frodo. Vet says he is listed as a Welsh Corgi, but I think I see some shepard in him. Sweet old guy no matter what he is and he's welcome to stay here. He followed me out to the garden and sat about 10-15 feet away just warming up in the sun after being in the cold rain all morning.

All kidding aside, there is enough of that going on around here as it is, I certainly don't need to add to it. Mostly pitbulls from what my wife is told. I could assume that they are being taken to be used for fighting, but there are people who hate that breed of dog and want to have them banned and/or euthanized and they could be the culprits as well.

As a pittie owner (check out twitter/FB), the breed prejudice is real and scary. I say I rescued my Lab from a shelter, but I really didn't as he would've been adopted in a heartbeat.

As far as my pittie, we REALLY rescued him. He was neglected by his previous "owner" and I think he was to be used as a bait dog.

With so many pitties being in the shelter system coupled with the prejudice/bait dog thing (people do adopt just to acquire bait dogs), he would've been dead in thirty days.

As for what you do/did, you rescued this guy from an accident, fight and/or kill shelter. If he had been brought in to a kill shelter with severe injuries (especially if he's an older guy), the future would've been bleak to say the least.

7 days here in the shelter and they get euthanized. Animal Services is going through an audit right now. As it turns out they euthanized a pit mix 15 minutes after being dropped off. One of the volunteers freaked and reported it and since then it's been a huge shitstorm down here since. All the violations are coming out in the audit as they find them and some of the items are just cruel and hard to imagine anyone could do purposefully. County blames the budget cuts. Its horrible.

We teamed up with a rescue group and we work with them on fostering and placing animals. I'd really like to get out of this house, get some land and build our own shelter where we can take in animals. Will need $$$ to get the 503c non profit status to be able to take in donations, etc. We'll see what the next year brings. It would be far more rewarding than being a corporate slave.

QUOTE(Puckforbrains @ Jun 1 2012, 01:44 PM) *

His name's Frodo? Awww. I'm so tempted, so very tempted to tell you to send him to me. For my sake and his, please don't take me up on it. So adorable. wub.gif

Good news. His owner's son came by and picked him up. He definitely comes from a family that cares about him, he just slipped out the door somehow. They had no idea he was missing, but happy he's back.

You're welcome to stay anytime you'd like Frodo! Take care buddy!

How does someone "not know" their dog is missing?

Someone leaving their dog unattended out doors in a yard? Not a good idea...

I've had almost 10 glorious years with my large Rottweiler.

As someone who grew up with Beagles, Brodie has been the most affectionate dog I've ever been around.

It's not the breed, it's the owner.

My wife spotted two kittens in the neighborhood last week and has been on a mission to rescue them. We've been easing into the whole rescue thing by slowly buying a large cage and humane trap. Last night we scored and got one of the kittens. Gonna take her to the vet and then start calling some of the local rescue groups.

Has anyone on this board ever owned a St. Bernard? I've pretty much decided to spend a year in ATL after graduating because the job market here isn't awful, and I am going to move into a house with two of my friends after graduating. They are all on board with me getting a St. Bernard puppy (I Love those Dogs), but really have no idea what I'm doing. Anything I should know before hand?

St. B's are adorable little puppies who grow up into gigantic dogs. I would think they need a lot of care AND training during their first two years. I think you need to do some serious research before you go any further.

Srsly, ATL may be a bit warm for that breed.
