My Firefox did that once in awhile, too - the Real Player plug-in was the culprit in my case.

Do other computers connect wirelessly and work correctly? It could be the access point. The cheaper ones benefit from being rebooted every few weeks. What kind of wireless encryption are you using? Some (mostly older) computers don't behave properly with WPA so try WEP instead. Also if your laptop uses a third party software to connect to wireless (Dell, Intel, etc tend to use their own software) try to set it up using the Windows built in wireless software instead.

Do you even use encryption? Lets put it this way, say a friend comes over with a laptop and wants to use the internet....can he boot up and use it or does he need to enter a "password" to gain access? That will tell us whether it is encrypted or not and we can go from there.

Alright Rick, here's on for you:

I tried to install Daemon Tools about two weeks ago. When it got time to actually install system drivers it reboot my computer. Just a nice hard reboot. No BSOD, no error message, the whole thing just shut off and started up again. I assumed it was a Daemon Tools issue and ignored it.

So I tried installing Virtual CloneDrive today, to see if I got a different result. Same deal - when it comes time to install system drivers it just reboots my machine. It finally worked in Safe Mode.

I used this to install Adobe CS5. I walked away the first time, came back and found my computer had rebooted. Did it again, this time keeping track of it, installed fine.

Over the course of the day I've discovered that anytime I'm away from the computer long enough for the power management options to kick in the thing reboots. After 15 minutes the monitors turn off. It had been that after 20 the HDD would, too, but I've set them to never due to this. No change, it still reboots.

Going about my business I tried to uninstall a game. Reboots.
I tried installing a Java update. Reboots.



No idea what could be doing this. At all. Haven't changed the BIOS. No other issues reading or writing to the HDD. Haven't installed anything lately.
Thinking I just need to reinstall windows. Need to back up the truly important files tonight and then just hope it doesn't overwrite the stuff I'm too lazy to back up.

Here's another one - if you have a good answer for this, you might prevent me from taking an axe to my work machine, setting it on fire, and throwing it out my window. I suspect that it is more a function of a crappy machine and/or a very slow connection, but I figured I'd ask.

Many basic actions take extremely long amounts of time to perform. This is especially true of opening attachments in Outlook, or even just switching between messages in folders. It will often take literally a minute or so to open an Excel or .pdf attachment, and it will lock up the entire machine in the process. Which isn't a lot in one instance, ofr course, but if I do it 30, 40, 50 times a day, it gets pretty annoying and makes me lose a lot of time. Also, if I leave Outlook on automatic send/receive, when it checks for e-mails, it very often locks up the machine as well. I've taken to closing Outlook while I'm working, and only opening it when I need to check e-mails, which seems to help. But even then, I still get lockups when switching between programs. What gives?

When I check the Task Manager, the biggest programs are Firefox when I have it open. The firm runs Symantec on all our machines, if you think that may be part of the problem.

Have you archived your old mail?

Unfortunately only about 10% of my company is on 2007 so I never know if someone can open a deck I send or not. The rest are on XP, circa 1999, which means their pivot tables barely work.
I've also learned that no one in my company knows what "track changes" is, making life so much worse.

Yeah, because while you probably have a 1GB limit on your mail server it's still pulling everything onto your HDD and just keeping it there indefinitely.
You may want to try just sorting your mail by size and deleting anything with huge attachments that you'll never need again and seeing if that helps.

When you have to save everything twice because your course management software has problems with the new Office file formats, it saves less room.

I'm really hoping that the latest edition of Blackboard resolves this problem in January.

Actually i think Symantec is 90% of your problem. I'm guessing it is scanning the attachment each time you open it. Try to disable the email scanning on it(Check the options. I don't know where to tell you to look exactly).

Sorry, guess I misunderstood, I thought it was only bad when you were opening attachments. What are the system specs? You might have too much running at once. Press ctrl shift and esc at the same time to bring up the task manager. Check the box to show processes from all users. How many processes are running? Spyware could always be an issue as well.

Anybody have any ideas as to why I can't view certain videos on YouTube and sites like NHL.com? The audio comes through okay but I get a screen-full of scrambled colors that blinks back into picture occasionally but never stays. It's pretty damn frustrating.

Generally that would be a codec issue, but youtube is converted to FLV so codecs are irrelevant. Interesting. Bandwidth issue perhaps?

I know you can get cheap KVMs but I'm not sure about DVI ones. Personally I would avoid the cheap ones though. They tend to flake out after only a short time. You can get decent ones in the $100 range. If you want to gamble with a cheap one I will look around and see what I can find. Ill get back to you later this afternoon.

Does your monitor have 2 inputs? Even if one is VGA and you convert it? If so, you could just plug both computers into the monitor, and then just get a cheaper KVM for the inputs (since you don't need one that does DVI now). It's not the best solution, but it would be cheaper.

As for DVI-enabled KVMs, I recommend the 4 port IOGear ones. They work pretty well, but they run about 130-150. I swear they used to have a 2 port KVM that was cheaper, but I can't find it anywhere.

Meh. Its for my work setup. I don't care if it ends up flaking out after a while. The problem is that I've got three flat panels on my desk along with two computers. I have one monitor dedicated to each pc with the middle monitor attached via KVM. Net result is I have a dual monitor setup for both machines with only three monitors. The problem is that I changed my main pc to a laptop and now I'm splitting the signal between a DVI for the one monitor and a dsub for the one connected via the KVM (before I had both going through a dual dsub video card on the pc) because the docking station only has one dsub port. So the issue i'm seeing is that whenever I connect my laptop to this docking station, my video settings get hosed and I have reset them every time. Its a pain.

I must admit I skimmed over as I was working with someone on the phone. Yeah I have a regular KVM now. I could do the setup you're suggesting, but then I gotta switch on two two devices...bleh. That's too much work. Right now I hit CTRL twice and I've switched. Laziness is a big factor in all of this.

Haha, yeah, my way is the sub-optimal way. It's definitely not as convenient as just hitting the key twice and being done with it, especially if you are doing it often. I generally use it on a setup where one machine is a server or something else I don't need to hop onto regularly.

I am unable to find any cheap DVI ones. Whatever you do, stay away from Avocent (not that they are cheap). We have run into all sorts of problems with them.

How did you get them on the touch if they weren't purchased? I mean if they're not already on your pc. If you synched them with iTunes you should have them somewhere no? There used to be some apps that would copy the songs off an iPod but the output was such a complete mess that it wasn't worth the time it would take to reconstruct the library.
