If they are ripped up they are going to fill up with water and sink. Even if they aren't ripped up, they don't have the intelligence to close their mouths and will fill with water through their mouth.

Once sunk, it will be incredibly hard for them to move, especially as their muscles begin to deteriorate even further then they already have.

Assuming they don't sink, they aren't going to swim, they are going to float and be a floppy mess.

Bottom line though, yes an island is most likely no good. A boat of some sort is the best bet. The problem of course is being able t cook the fish you catch for meals. Any form of starting fires is going to run out over time and you don't want to risk bacteria or anything from uncooked foods.
