I hate being told what music to like, but "The Royal We" is an absolutely perfect song. Even if it sounds like the Pumpkins.

I agree with this statement.

Also, shifting gears, I've been listening to a lot of The Tallest Man on Earth lately:
The new album, The Wild Hunt, is absolutely amazing.

What's the deal with this new Exile on Main St. release, anyone know? A new remix? Unreleased tracks? I know Jagger has been saying for a while that he wanted to redo it. Some of the songs on the original mix really do sound like shit.

It's remastered for the one CD. You can also buy a double CD that includes the remastered original plus 10 unreleased tracks, I think. And then there is some other ridiculously priced set that includes a book, postcards, a DVD, toenail clippings, and a pubic hair, along with the vinyl records.

That album has a lot of extra crap thrown in there already, can't imagine that I'd want an additional 10 songs. But it will be nice to hear some of the classics with a better sound. On the original, you can barely hear the vocals on "Happy."

Since it was Keith singing, I don't think that was an accident.

I've had some similarly weird experiences lately: I heard Echo and the Bunnymen in Walgreens and a Radiohead song from "In Rainbows" in the grocery store.
Another recovery from the Cassette Ark Of The Covenant in my basement. This album still kicks all sorts of ass twenty-something years after I first bought it.

Was this related to the WNYC performance at the Greene Space? I was there for that. Opener Das Racist did not perform "Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell" but did thankfully drop a song about White Castle.

Recently acquired "Rock and Roll Animal" again for the first time in many years. My LP version back in the day had been puked on (not me...I think), so that some songs could not be played after it was cleaned up. I kept it for a long time after and would just play Sweet Jane and Rock and Roll between the "scars".

Saw Mumford and Sons at the Music Hall last night, and it was pretty intense. The Cave was especially amazing, and some of their new material sounded great too. I'm officially on the bandwagon - that's another one I owe you, 'bug.

Anyone a fan of Isis?
Beamer
May 20 2010, 01:27 AM
I haven't been a huge fan of Isis since Celestial. I saw them four or five times before Oceanic came out, only twice since. I'm never a fan of their newer albums until I see them live (they, along with Neurosis, are the two best live acts I've seen. Converge is [or at least was] right there, too.)
Guess I only have one more chance to see them live. I'll be curious to see what Aaron Turner focuses on next.
I should clarify that by "huge fan" I'm pretty sure I have the largest collection of Isis test presses of someone not affiliated with the band. I at least used to. I don't know of anyone else with a Celestial or Red Sea test press. I also have a copy of The Red Sea limited to 3.
That's what the Hold Steady sounds like. They're trying desperately - oh, so desperately - to be some sort of generational savior of power chords and drinking anthems, but Heaven is Whenever is the sort of rote rock 'n' roll that people ridiculed Poison for making. And it's almost exactly the same album these guys have been making for years.
QUOTE
His "devil's midget" appearance and swords-and-sorcery themes opened themselves up to outsider mockery, but the keyboard-padded melodies and the easy-to-grasp, literally black-and-white nature of his lyrical dichotomies made it easy for Dio to convert anyone who gave him an honest chance.
Pretty hard to take someone seriously when they call drinking anthems rote on one hand, and praise a guy for his easy-to-grasp visions of elves on the other.

Despite my Hold Steady fandom, which I've gushed about here many times, I read the first part and thought ,"hmm, OK, never thought about it that way, those are some good points." And then he praised Dio for doing the same thing he took apart the Hold Steady for, namely for sticking to a vision and making "easy to grasp" music.

The man has been dead for less than a week, Mike. Have you no shame? I understand that you're too fancy-pants to appreciate the lyrical dichotomies of Ronnie James Dio, what with being raised on liberal textbooks and all. But to speak ill of the recent dead? So shameful. You know, Dio was in league with the dark forces. LOOK OUT!!!!
