Spent some time working on the computer yesterday evening listening to Thelonious Monk's 5 by Monk by 5 album. I need to do that (the listening, not the working) more often. Earlier, it was Stan Getz. Tonight, I'm leaning toward Charlie Parker.....but we'll see.

The casual dropping of "bitch" and "faggot" really bugs me, though. I'll have to listen to them a little more closely. Also, some of the tricks (like the obsession with vomiting) are a little juvenile, but I'll chalk that up to teenagers trying to be shocking. Still, the best new hip-hop I've heard in a while.

The one you posted name dropped Reptar in the first 3 lines. I don't know if I'm just that impressed or loving the cultural references from my childhood.

I've listened to this song about 5 times this afternoon...

Just a point of curiousity - do you like, dislike, or just plain not notice the loop in the background? That statick-y loop sound put me off, personally. Was just wondering.

Like, very much. I've always liked sound effects in hip-hop that set an ominous or even irritating tone, like early PE or Cypress Hill.

Wow. I just watched the video you posted. He is incredibly talented and creative. A little juvenile? Yes. He can mature, though.

It's not a matter of maturation. Tyler the Creator and his cronies have an entirely nihilistic outlook and as long as he knows that it's what makes him unique he won't change. I hope it doesn't. I personally love that type of humor and bleak brand of lyrics.

I'm not talking about the nihilism - I actually think he's very sophisticated on the subject of mental illness, at least from that one example. The puke and noose gags are forced though, and been done before. It comes across as an attempt to be shocking for the sake of it.

This. It's not even about the poor look on life, its the fact he can take a subject like being actually insane and make an incredibly deep and captivating song about it. It almost reminded me of Eminem's "Stan"

The new PJ Harvey album is supposed to be amazing. Does anyone know if it's streaming anywhere? Looks like NPR's feed was taken down.

Listening to Devotchka right now, pretty dramatic and wild stuff, never listened to them before.

The Tiny Desk concert version of this song is much better, I just can't embed it. I agree with you about no standout songs but its solid all around.

I like 'em, but yawn to the gimmick. I grew up with a bunch of teenagers in Fishbone with the same "We're weird and don't give a f**k" attitude. So.

Never mind this how did Felicia Day being on his show slide under my radar? She might actually make him watchable for fuck's sake.

The Cars have a new album coming out in May. Not really sure how to feel about this yet.

Understandable. There needs to be someone like this in music, rap especially, that can call out all the big artists and mock the status quo of the entertainment business.

I heard about this. I usually listen to listen to the 80s channel on Sirius and always catch Richard Blade talking about how some washed-up band either just recorded or is recording some sad new music. ("Oh, you haven't heard the new Duran Duran album?") So I'm definitely leery of this. But here's the worst part -- I think they're touring too. And I probably want to go see them. Which makes me the very person I spent a good part of my life making fun of: the old guy that goes to the show of the washed up band for non-ironic reasons. My inner hipster is dying a little.
Bleedin-Blue
If Iron Maiden has taught us anything in the last couple years, it's that just because you CAN "get the band back together" for a new album, doesn't really mean you should.

New Radiohead has been released to folks who pre-ordered!

Saddly, I did not pre-order as I have a problem paying $10 for a digital copy of an album that I'm going to buy on CD the day it's released in stores :/ I'd rather not pay for the same thing twice.

If anyone hunts down a stream, let me know! From what I hear it's excellent.

That video for "Lotus Flower" is pretty trippy. I assume that's Thom Yorke's face digitally placed on someone else's face.

Meanwhile, on Radiohead day, tix for a couple of good shows went on sale. QOTA at Terminal 5 (sold out in like two seconds), Florence and the Machine at Summer Stage (same), and PJ Harvey at Terminal 5 (taking a little longer). I am somewhat miffed by the practice of "pre-sales" where most if not all of the tickets seem to go on sale before the public date. Why even have a public sale, if that's the case? Seems like in this era, with fan and FB pages, the presale opportunities are so numerous that it eliminates the need for a public sale date.
