Just picked up Jack Whites 7" for Sixteen Saltines. B-side is a cover of U2's Love is Blindness, which I previously thought ,and still do, think its a great song. However Jacks version is pretty intense as well.

Do you guys actually take the Pitchfork reviews seriously? I'll check the score an album gets, but reading the actual review is almost painful.

I actually never check Pitchfork reviews. I tend to get recommendations for one of four places:

I take them seriously, but in context. I like reading reviews and criticism because they help me articulate what I like and don't like about music. But yeah, the reviewers at Pitchfork can really be assholes, and at times bizarrely incoherent. They give lukewarm reviews to anything they deem derivative in their own subjective way, even if it's great, and absolutely destroy anything they don't like (though in fairness, often to greatly humorous effect). I find that the A/V Club at The Onion strikes a better balance between selectivity and not being pretentious dicks. I get a lot of great new music suggestions from Pitchfork though, especially the Spotify app.

Thanks for the suggestion for Spiritualized. From what I heard today at my shitty internet connection in my Study Abroad center they were good!

Case in point on Pitchfork - in 2004, they gave a 5.2 to Hot Fuss.

I only thought to look this particular review up after they announced today that the Killers' saxophonist (yes, they apparently had one) committed suicide in Las Vegas. As one of the commenters said, way too may puns in that one.

Let's just take a break from how pretentious pitchfork can be and just remember how great a song this was

It means the lyrics suck, have no depth, and the music never really challenges anything below the surface. That the blogger hipsters pigeonhole the band into being some sort of manufactured pop music fad, never allowing them to dig deeper into their creativity and becoming the awesome band they really could be.

Or not.

I think that makes less sense than the Pitchfork version.

If you're being serious, how do blogger hipsters (assuming you could ever identify that demographic) pigeonhole anyone, or in Pitchfork's words, what exactly is lifestyle music for female professionals who "still" wear cool hairstyles?

Initially you, for even bothering to read reviews on Pitchfork. However, they do exactly what they state the 'hipster bloggers' do when they immediately compare a band to another. You pigeonhole them into being the next 'whatever is hot' band. I'm guilty of it as well. When someone says 'the next Smashing Pumpkins' or the next Zeppelin, you're drawing comparisons.

That said, the way I interpret or translate Pitchfork's review, I think its spot on about a band like the Killers.

To answer your question, about females who still wear cool hairstyles - I believe they are talking about the type of people who sit around the water cooler talking about their tan, hair, how sore they are from working out, the latest gossip from Housewives of NJ/NY/CA, etc. Think shallow people.

That's my take even if it makes less sense.

OK, not sure what that dig is for, but fine. I really thought you were attempting satire with that first post. Even assuming that's all true though, what does that have to do with the music? This is part of my problem with them. They slag off on anything that they deem to be too popular for reasons that are ultimately unrelated to the music itself.

As I said above, I like them because I learn about a lot of interesting music through their publication. I also don't mind high standards and snark. Kusand and I were laughing offline about how they eviscerated the Airborne Toxic Event album. I posted a link a few pages back to their "review" of Jet's latest album, which consisted of a YouTube clip of a monkey peeing in his mouth. At least, however, those are statements on the merits of the music itself, instead of some vague statement of animosity toward the people who happen to like it.

I can make the connections in what they are saying, I just may not be able to word it in an articulate manner.

The way I interpret the Killers review, they blame shallow people for liking the shallow music. Essentially, perpetuating crappy music and keeping the band from becoming a better band All because the shallow people supporting them are providing them with success, the band doesn't need to have to work too hard to be successful. Ultimately leaving us with a mediocre product.

OK, I see that, but I think that's a tenuous connection at best. Plus, it adds an extra level of subjectivity to an analysis that is already loaded with it. If that's their style, fine, know their biases, but I just don't like it. They like lots of acts over there that probably have a lot of shallow fans, so what's the difference there? When the music is good, the shallow fans don't affect it, but when the music is bad, they do?

I think we can agree we dislike Pitchfork.

I just dislike their biases sometimes. As I said above, I hear about a lot of great new music from them.


Anyway, moving on, fired up the Mark Lanegan album last night, and loved it on first listen. Bluesy, dark stuff, but with some weird effects, and his signature raspy vocals. I liked the Scream Trees CD way back when, and I knew that he had some highly regarded solo work, but had never really given any of it a try.

And the A/V Club and Pitchfork both panned it oh nooooooo!

Sirius XMU...they just did a block of classic 4AD stuff: Pixies, Throwing Muses, Cocteau Twins, Pale Saints.

As I said earlier, I've been paying more attention to labels for artists that I've been digging lately. 4AD is probably the best one going right now. Couldn't ask for more from an indie fan's perspective.

I often agree with Pitchfork's grades, but I rarely read their reviews.

Hey Jane is one of the best songs I've heard in a long time.

Yeah, was gonna say, thanks for the Spiritualized tip, liking that album more and more on each listen. "Hey Jane" is definitely the standout so far. Also "Heading for the Top Now."

Was wondering if anyone here had any opinions on Rocket Juice and the Moon - kind of surprised not to see any posts.

Sort of off-topic, but watched Gotye on (dvr'd) SNL and Kimbra was so 'method' that she actually appeared to be crying during "Someone I used to Know". That in turn made me google her and I found an amazing clip of her performing solo and outdoors at SWSX (I think) a la KT Tunstall with "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree".

I wonder if people know that your Spotify friends can see what you're listening to. I've learned a lot about some of my friends.
