Full Version: Old commercials
Rangerland Forum > Off Topic > Anything Goes

A friend and I started talking about commercials from when we were growing up. These two we find hysterical today, even though they were ordinary back when they were made (OK, we're old). The first I could not find the entire original from the 70's so, we used one from the 90's that did a flashback. What old commercials were your favorites?

I loved how dated this one is...from 1982...I didn't get my own "computer" until 1996.

and this one was on more than Giuseppe Franco is now.

Rest in Peace, Clara Peller.

This one's a remake, but it's still a classic.

This one was a Super Bowl ad a few years back, and I thought it was clever -- until the company won the bid for our Navy-Marine Corps Intranet, or NMCI -- which we now (not-so-lovingly) say stands for "No Mission Critical Information." rolleyes.gif

Awesome. I go looking for a commercial and accidentally wind up promoting one of my favorite (non-Rangerland) websites in the process. Score.

The singing pills are one of my all time favorite PSAs. But I've talked with friends, and I think it was really just shown in the tri-state area - most of my friends from the Boston area never saw it growing up.

The other one I loved was the one that talks about cheese as a healthy snack between school and dinner. "I'm so hungry I could eat a wagon wheel!"

Have you heard of the website Ashley Madison? They advertise on Howard Stern - they're a hookup service for people who want to have affairs. Anyway, the only reason that I mention this is that in their latest ad spots, they have a jingle at the end that's set to the tune of 'Lolly Lolly Lolly - Get Your Adverbs Here!' huh.gif

I still maintain that SMB 3 is the best video game ever. EVER.

Just some of the shit from my younger childhood days. God, that My Buddy thing was fucking creepy. Like a pre-cursor to Chucky.

It's not a commercial but it still brings back memories:

A year or 2 ago, I went and ordered the ENTIRE DM catalogue, based on how I remembered them as a kid. Sent the whole mess back for a full refund. God, it's fucking awful.

Really? Wow...that's really damn depressing actually. I was about four when it was on and it was the greatest show in the world.

yep. I couldn't believe how shitty it was. I sat there, with my kids (I, uh, got it for them, right?) and watched the total suckdom of the first DVD unfold. Took it back to the office, resealed the DVD case I'd opened, resealed the set-box of season 1 and called Amazon to report that I'd made a mistake. Looked new, so they took the whole mess back and gave me a full refund. Whew. That was close. It was pretty fucking expensive, so I'm lucky to have access to a shrink-wrap rig for just such an emerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgency...

Now that I think about it, I told them that somebody bought them for me for my birthday, so I didn't need the ones I'd bought anymore. Something lame, like that. Man, I couldn't WAIT to hear the little guy say: "Oh crumbs, Chief!", but oh, no, it was so shitty. So very, very shitty.

I would suggest never watching The Superfriends, then - particularly the Wendy and Martin years.

aw, Man! See? Dang. I can't have nuthin' good. Those shows suck, too? Damnit. The Wendy and Marvin years were NEW when I was up at 7am on Saturdays. I totally would have hit Wendy, too. Those white slacks were killer... What. I mean, you know, if I were a 'toon and all. What. She was hot.

You know what's funny...I can remember back when I was about 6 or 7 watching Howard the Duck on HBO or something and thinking it was the greatest fucking movie on Earth. Then, I saw it again when I was about 19 or so and it was the stupidest movie I'd ever seen. I guess it's all about perspective, huh?
Nilan 666
I'd probably still love Howard the Duck, but in a Rifftrax kinda way.

Totally disagree, Howard the Duck is still awesome. Perhaps awesome cause it's bad, but I still find it entertaining as hell.

I learned this, too (although it's "We the people of the United States") These bring back so many memories that I'm verklempt. Yeah, they're not commercials but I'm not sorry to say I learned a lot.

I better get out before this turns into a tribute to Schoolhouse Rock.
