I've decided that I've fucking had it with my Zune which has been totally unreliable since they upgraded to the 3.0 software. However I don't want an Ipod because the Itunes software is quite possibly the worst program I've ever attempted to use. It is openly user hostile it would seem, as opposed to the zune which is easy to use, it just fucked up my zune.

Any suggestions anyone?

Creative and Sandisk make some nice players, and they're software is really simple...drag and drop, although it's not a complete ecosystem like Zune or iTunes if that matters. Creative players sound really nice also. If you're looking for more of a media player than an mp3 player, consider Archos also.

What's up with your Zune? Mine has always worked fine.

I can't wait for the new Zune to come out this fall.

My 30 gig was awesome until they upgraded the software, now it locks up, takes forever to start and the battery craps out at random times in spite of it being full.

Can you download the software again? Maybe something was screwed up the initial time.
RedHerring
I've heard iRiver makes good stuff. I had a Creative Zen Micro. It was ok, it did the job, but the software both on the player and on the computer was meh.
Nilan 666
It's not worth the effort since I didn't particularly like the new software and you can't really go backwards since they force you to upgrade. All these problems just so I can play Tetris on the damn thing, thanks Bill.

That's very weird. Did you report it to them? There must be a way you can reset it from scratch, and uninstall-reinstall the software.

The only time i had trouble with my device (not the softtware though), was when we were on our way back from Atlanta and i guess it over heated in the car with the sun beating on it. The graphics were messed up. Miraculously, i left it on the border of my window, next to my bed, on a very very cold night (as if, but cold enough), and i didn't touch it for like three days or so and all the sudden the graphics were good.

I think something screwed up in the process with yours. When did you buy it? If it turns out they are to blame then i think they will send you another one.

I think the iPod is a better device, better quality, but you're right about iTunes. IT SUCKS. And actually, my brother has had a few issues with his iPod. I think sooner or later it will have some more issues.

It happens with such electronical devices.

I love the Zune because of the software, the point system, and the device is not as sophisticated, but i listen to the radio on it and i can buy a song then. The next generation will be all HD and touch screen (i think). That's definitely my Christmas gift!

If i were you, i'd try to let customer service know it's their blame and have them send one out to you while you send yours to them. I remember i did that with the old ..... Rio, was it? One of the first mp3s on the market. They sent a free one to me because the one i got was not working properly.

Picked it up on clearance over a year ago so I don't think the warranty is any good anymore, especially since they don't make the 30 anymore.

Or maybe when he points out the feature you're complaining is missing already exists, you'll tell him how no one talks about the annoying click sounds the Ipod click wheel used to make, and so iTunes is bad anyway.

I despise iTunes. It's an obnoxious piece of software that does nothing as well as winamp, aside from run background processes, try to sell you stuff, and try to install useless video codeces.

At least it doesn't use a points system, though.

Archos has the most technology, but also the least reliable. Zune is somewhere between. iPods are the most reliable but a bit bleh. You can run them without iTunes pretty easily. I never go near that crap, but I'm on my third iPod.

I've had 2 iPods. My first was the 2nd Gen mini that would only hold 10 minutes of a charge after 8 months. My 2nd was an 80GB Video which CONSTANTLY froze on me when advancing through songs. I was almost relieved when I lost it so I could justify buying a different player.

My 2nd Gen 8GB Zune...not one problem since October. I like the software better than iTunes also. It looks and feels better, and more modern. iTunes is getting kinda old. And I love the mixview feature, plus I like the fact that it watches certain folders instead of copying the file ( I think that's how iTunes works, someone please correct me if I'm wrong). On the hardware side, I like the squircle soooooooo much better than the scroll wheel, it's faster and more natural imo.
The Great Dane

Just got my first Ipod.
It's a 16 gb touch, and I have to say I love it.

I only use Itunes for keeping track of my music and have encountered no problems so far.

Anyone with horror stories?

If you have an iPod and you do not like iTunes, you can always use Songbird which is open source and free:

Songbird

It will even play stuff you downloaded from iTunes that had the old DRM stuff.

Why couldn't you? Convert it to the proper format, and you can manage it with iTunes. You could also use iTunes to load it onto an iPod or iPhone. Not that I've ever done that.
