The better debate is regarding the effect of PETA's attention-grabbing stunts.
It gets them recognition amongst the crazies, who give them money, but it keeps them fringe and irrelevant. Could they get more money otherwise? Maybe. But I think all these stupid stunts repeatedly prove that PETA has no interest in saving the world, as they have to know that these stunts will always prevent that from happening.
On the other hand Peta are to be commended for getting various female celebrities to doff their clothes in protest. That said, *blblblblbllblblblblblbllblblblblbllblblbl*
