The AHL is typically a proving ground for NHL rule changes. The shootout was done there first before coming to the NHL, for example.

The shootout rule change is interesting and disheartening to me because I had hoped the NHL would make it like the AHL. The AHL allows five shooters only to go in the shootout. It's not like the NHL where you have every single player go. I liked the AHL format. But now they've changed it to the NHL format.

5 shooters who cycle until 1 team wins?

I don't know, I think I prefer the NHL rules. It's awesome when a player you don't think would ever score does so on the shootout...ie. Malik

How about we just go to 60 minutes of 4 on 4 with one minute penalties? I hate playing OT totally different from regulation.

Down with loser points to boot.

We've gotten used to seeing at least one rule change per season that dulls down the action. As far as this case goes though, why can't we just get rid of the SO? Go back to ties after one OT. It makes it more exciting in the standings, whereas the majority of shootouts are just boring to watch. Save those for the All-Star skills competition. It will also make that more exciting to watch and something to look forward to, IMO. With the SO, we already see what these guys can do on breakaways.

meh, this was the nearest AHL thread, so I'm putting it here...

The Texas Stars AHL schedule just got forwarded to me. Hatfid does NOT play them this season. Fuck Bettman, as I'm certain this is his fault. I hate the Stars, and therefore their farm team as well. However, I will likely attend several games if only to root against the sumbitches. And to peep out the AHL hotties that should be around the shiny new arena that they just built.
That is all.

I think a shootout must require the winner as the team with the best group of players. Choosing five out of 18 players is lame, i think. Moments like Malik's SO winner make it historical. Everyone will remember Malik's SO goal. Had it been just five players and Jagr scores two SO goals, second one as the winner, then no one would remember that.

Okay, so, as it turned out, I still hate the Dallas stars but I love these AHL guys (they basically replaced my folded IceBats). Went to several games this season and, except for one night when they got stomped by Peoria (is this a damned urinary symptom?) they won every game. Well, they just bumped Chelios and the Chicago Wolves out in 7 and now head North to play the Hamilton Mustangs Bulldogs in the conf. finals. Muy bueno for the inaugural season, no? cool.gif

......... but you'd prefer changing the way the actual game in regulation is played instead ???? Makes sense! blink.gif

I dunno, I kind of like the shootout compared to going home with no closure.

If anything they should get rid of that point they reward teams with for just making it to OT. WTF is that for? Not to mention in a tied game it makes both teams get into a defensive posture at the end of a game so they can earn at least a point. Sucks.
