The AHL is typically a proving ground for NHL rule changes. The shootout was done there first before coming to the NHL, for example.
The shootout rule change is interesting and disheartening to me because I had hoped the NHL would make it like the AHL. The AHL allows five shooters only to go in the shootout. It's not like the NHL where you have every single player go. I liked the AHL format. But now they've changed it to the NHL format.
