Usain Bolt broke the world record in the 100 meters at 9.58

QUOTE
Usain Bolt proved again he races in a world of his own, winning a huge matchup against Tyson Gay in a world record time of 9.58 seconds Sunday at the world championships.
Running full-out in ideal conditions and against the toughest competition possible for the first time in his 22 years, Bolt blew away his own world record by a massive .11 seconds and made Gay seem like a laggard despite setting a U.S. record of 9.71 seconds.

It was the biggest increase in the record since electronic time was introduced in 1968.

VS and NBC are covering the event, and VS is having taped delay coverage tonight (it's being held in Berlin). I don't know whether they will show this race or whether NBC will show it next weekend, or both.

Interesting new training tactic for marathon runners:

QUOTE
Felix Limo, a Kenyan runner who has won the 2006 London and 2005 Chicago marathons, says U.S. runners rely too much on structure and scientific programs—the sorts of things described in those books in the 1970s. They fix their minds on certain speeds, he says, and aren't flexible enough.

"I don't need a mileage like the runners here," he says. "I can push myself."

One of the first Western runners to figure out the Africans was Great Britain's Paula Radcliffe, who has won eight major marathon events since 2000. She's got some structure to her training, but she's known more for her relentless attacking and competitiveness.

Ms. Radcliffe's emergence coincided with the 2001 founding of the Mammoth Track Club in Mammoth Lakes, Calif., whose mission is to advance the naturally aggressive "run first, ask questions later" style the Africans run with.

Long Jump World Record Holder Mike Powell thinks that Usain Bolt should try the long jump:

QUOTE
Jamaican Usain Bolt, whose dazzling sprints have seen him demolish the 100 and 200 meters world records at the world championships could jump nine meters, long jump world record holder Mike Powell said Friday.
Powell, whose world record of 8.95 meters has been standing since the 1991 world championships, said Bolt should try out long jump, a perfect fit for his speed and height.
"I can show him how to jump nine meters, for a small fee," he said with a grin.
"With his height (1.95m) he is the type who would scare me (as a long jumper) ... he is tall and fast. You cannot put into words how great an athlete he is."
Bolt is the only sprinter ever to hold the world and Olympic 100 and 200 titles as well as the world records over both distances simultaneously.
"We are dealing with a freak-of-nature athlete. He is off the charts," Powell said. "He goes to another level ... his pure athleticism is unbearable. He is destroying other athletes, making them look like kids."
