Just saw that the tsunami sirens are going to go off in Hawaii at 6 a.m. their time.
Stay safe, Giac!

First wave is estimated to arrive at 1119AM HST.

This is the fifth largest earthquake in the last 110 years. California may see some "unusual" sea level activity as well.

Hmm... I was going to run down to the harbor and back today, but since San Diego County's under a tsunami warning I think I'll pass.

I've scratched plans for runs for several reasons, but this one's new!

There could be waves around 2 feet (which is a 2 foot rise in the actual sea level) along the CA coast. Probably not destructive, but significant.

Should be some excellent documentation (video) if waves hit Hawaii later today.

2012 coming soon?

This is kinda scary.........

We're doing fine here, expecting a 1.5 foot "tsunami" wave here around 11-11:30 this morning (Hawaii time) -- Hilo (Big Island) is expecting an 8-footer, and Maui may get 6-feet. That may not sound like much, but it is. You can go to KSSK Radio, click on "Listen Live" and listen to the news coverage (yes, my wife Julia's at work this morning) on KSSK, the official civil defense radio station for Oahu.

My in-laws live in a low-lying area and will probably be coming over here this morning. Most everything 's closed this morning, but otherwise, I'm making coffee and doing laundy.

going to go down to Doheny Beach to photograph if anything actually hits. There is a nice perch about 50' above the beach. I'll put something up if there is anything to see.

They're now calling for 9-footers in Hilo.

9-foot waves forecast for Hilo Bay at 11:05 a.m.

This is the view from our balcony of the south shore, about a mile or so away. The shipping companies and marinas are advising all their customers to put out to sea -- they're safe in deep water, since the tsunami would literally pass right under them with no visible impact -- and many are heeding that advice.

I expect to see a lot more boats heading out in the next 90 minutes.

Didn't Japan just get a 7.something earthquake off their coast a day or two before the Chilean one? Seems to be a lot of activity along the Pacific Ring of Fire lately.
Giac
And I'm hearing Argentina got hit with a quake a few hours after Chile. huh.gif

Anyone else hearing "Shake, Rattle and Roll" in their heads?

Latest from the Honolulu Advertiser:

Hawaii braces for tsunami

QUOTE
Officials at the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center say this morning's tsunami wave should arrive at a height of 2.5 meters — or just over 8 feet — when it hits the Big Island at 11:19 a.m.

By the time it reaches Oahu 40 minutes later, the waves should only be a meter or less.

A meter is equivalent to 39 inches. But officials urged people not to be lulled by the relatively small wave heights in a state accustomed to monster waves.

"You're going to have some run-up and you're probably going to see some damage in the inundation zone area," said Victor Sardina, a geophysicist for the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center. "I would hope people don't stay around the coastal area. Just go inward; stay away from the shore."

The center warned that tsunami wave heights cannot be predicted and that the first wave may not be the biggest.

Where do you live Giac?

I'm in an area called Makiki, between downtown (business district) Honolulu and Waikiki. We're about a mile (maybe a little more) from the south shore, just north of Kewalo Basin boat harbor, about a mile or so from Ala Moana Center, the state's largest shopping center.

Got that video camera ready? I guess not expecting much in HNL, but should still be a neat thing to see.

This may be the most prepared for recording of a tsunami ever. I cannot wait to see footage and what info we learn from this.

Waves should be hitting California now.
Giac
All coastal City & County roads were closed almost ten minutes ago. About an hour before this hits the Big Island, and about 90 minutes until it hits here (whatever that means).

Here's a link to the state's Live Surf Cameras, in this case for the south shore.

Wow that's the 1st time I've ever heard panic in his voice.

It's amazing how many after shocks have occurred and how frequently! In the first hour, here's what happened:

The earthquake occurred at 06:34, 8.8 mag
The first aftershock occurred at 6:52, 6.2 mag (18 minutes after the last shake)
The next aftershock occurred at 7:12, 6.0 mag (20 minutes after the last shake)
The next aftershock occurred at 7:19, 5.4 mag (7 minutes after the last shake)
The next aftershock occurred at 7:33, 5.6 mag (14 minutes after the last shake)
The next aftershock occurred at 7:37, 6.0 mag (4 minutes after the last shake)

and it continues. Since the quake there have been 50 aftershocks!

I'm kind of surprised this big mother waited so long to leave the harbor (taken at 10:45 a.m.), but he's making good time heading to deep water.

Sirens going off here again; about time for whatever will hit Hilo to hit.....listening to KSSK Radio, the wife's station, and their GM is on the Big Island watching the ocean and he says it's very calm, no sign of any impending disaster - hoping this all turns out to be for naught.

I heard sailboats sailed out to sea. How far out do they have to go to be safe.

It's past the time it was supposed to hit Hilo on the Big Island, and no reports of anything. *fingers crossed*

Paul, they just have to be in "deep" water - the tsunami travels in deep water and its imapcts are only felt when it moves into the shallow water and the wave energy comes ashore. I don't know what qualifies as "deep water," but the drop-off off the south shore is pretty good, and most of these boats are at least a mile or two offshore, so they're likely in good shape. I know the harbormasters and Coast Guard are advising them how far out they need to go to be safe.

Been watching that feed for nearly 2 hours, there's been a dramatic change in water level in the last 15 minutes. Looks like it's done sucking out, waiting for the 1st wave to come in. Not seeing any evidence of tsunami on the cnn and msnbc feeds
