It is well known that it is highly disrespectful to the Muslim religion to show an image or "voice" of Muhammad. Death threats are retarded, but they knew what the reaction might be when they decided to do this.

Well fuck it. It is well known that it is highly disrespectful to Catholics to treat the Pope and sometimes Jesus the way they do, but we either a) don't give a shit, b) laugh at it because it is comedy and should not be taken seriously, c) get upset and denounce South Park d) don't watch it.

It is well known that it is highly critical of Jewish people as well, but any death threats there? NO.

These crazies, in the USA, where it is under the Constitution to be free of speech and expression, are basically telling this country to shove the Constitution up its ass. Fuck that. Complain about it? Fine. Protest? Okay! Death threats? Unacceptable. To hell with these assholes.

They usually reserve that stuff for Planned Parenthood clinics.

An-nee-way ... all you're doing is flipping the middle finger and singing the "America, Fuck Yeah!" song to a group of people that hate America and disprove of our way of life. Al Queda is supposed to care about the Constitution and freedom of speech? They try to murder people for drawing pictures of their prophet. It's like trying to reason with you dog as to why she shouldn't pee on the carpet. Look at how your excrement has changed the color of the fibers. I know you can't see color, but if you could, you'd agree that this particular rug goes well with the curtains, which I also bought at Ikea too by the way." As my father once advised me in dealing with an ex-girlfriend, you can't reason with the irrational.

Besides, these idiot clowns in their little internet chatroom didn't threaten Matt and Trey directly, but pointed out an actual fact that there are insane and hateful people in the world that are willing to commit murder for an offense on this level. It's nothing more than a coward's threat, and I credit the South Park guys (and not their network) for putting themselves out there to show that you can't let fear or paranoia dictate your creative and artistic expression. I'm with you. Fuck those assholes! But let's not fall into their trap of trying to reason with them and giving them any credence by recognizing them as worthy of even a moment's consideration.

On topic, this isn't the first time South Park has shown Mohammad, and IIRC, it was Comedy Central who were the pussies here, not Matt and Trey. The proceeded with the episode and Comedy Central decided to "bleep out" every time they said "the prophet Mohammad" or something like that.

If those "converts" want to act like terrorists, they should be treated like terrorists, tbh. Ushering death threats because of a TV show and wishing "Allah would kill" the creators of the show would "burn them in hell" sounds like terrorism to me.

So, you're telling me that a Catholic group will go to bomb a Planned Parenthood clinic and slit the throats, in public, of PP employees? .................... not sure whether to laugh or get angry.

This is a group of Muslims that live in New York. They should be in prison for this. You make this as if it was nothing, but they had an impact. They forced us to increase security from any terrorist threat at Comedy Central's HQ. If anything, they win just by having that happen and that is what i want to stop. We need to show balls, not fear.

Within the past year an abortion doctor (Dr. George Tiller) was shot through the eye and murdered while he attended services at church. This was the second time in his life that he had been shot, in addition to having his health clinic bombed. The individual responsible for this had connections to the anti-abortion terrorist group Army of God. Another affiliate of that group is David Trosch. I don't think the family or Dr. George Tiller would distinguish between him being shot and having his throat slit.

Every religion has factions of people that become fanatical and extremist about their beliefs, including Catholics. Sorry but our religion is not immune from the crazies.

Its not like that has never happened before...

I get that you oppose censorship in this context, but there is a line and South Park tried too and succeeded in crossing it. Now I love South Park, but honestly some of the shit they say inspires people to say more shit about me because of my religion. Some people don't know when to stop, and if someone takes offense to that they have the right to speak out.

As for the death threats, they are excessive and completely and utterly wrong, but when you are deliberately trying to go over the line to piss off a group of people then sometimes it deserves to be censored. I really thought the episode could have been hysterical as a reference to the Family Guy episodes, but Matt and Trey were basically like "lets just make a show about showing the image of Mohamed to piss people off!"

I learned something today by the way, talking about this only gives their cause legitimacy, and it shouldn't have any because they are a splinter extremist group. But no, we feel the need to exert our ideals on others and continue to bring their cause up over and over again. Oh well.

This is what I meant by my "Osama is smiling" comment. By making a big deal out of this, we're giving them what they want. The whole point of terrorism is to get people to change their behaviors in response to a very negative stimulus, usually threats or violence. It's to get people to become scared, to always be looking over their shoulders, to make them afraid to express themselves for fear of retaliation.

Not necessarily but based on history I would say, maybe. At least there are some fringe groups that see themselves as under the umbrella that well... All religious groups have them. The nut job zealots.

Do not operate from an assumption of purity and piety with the Catholic Church. You can't know where you are going until you know where you have been. To be sure I am not railing the Catholic Church as much as I am pointing out a sketchy history. I would say it is fair and reasonable to exhibit that the church has "evolved" into something heading down the road towards fulfilling on its true intent. You can't tell me however, that there are some real freak sideshows operating under the umbrella of Church. Just ask Mel Gibson.

And maybe that is the point. No you don't see thousands of Catholics marching in the street in protest to some incendiary picture of Jesus but you don't see thousands of Muslims taking to the street either.

My views are extremely liberal when it comes to freedom of speech and the first amendment, but have you actually read the words in the first amendment?

QUOTE
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

No one is violating any first amendment rights here because no one is passing a law saying South Park can't do what they did. And a company has the right to self-censor their own shows, although I may not agree with it.

People can express themselves and say what they want, but they also have to understand there are consequences that goes along with it. Other people have the right to come back and respond to what you're saying and doing because that's well within their rights to do.

Now violence and hurting/killing someone is illegal, of course. But to say "hey, you're a bunch of assholes and our God should kill you for this and burn in hell" is well within their rights.

Wow.

First of all, Trosch was kicked out by the Archbishop. So....you have no point there because islam clerics that openly promote violence are untouched, in fact, they are praised and followed.

Tiller was not killed by a Catholic group. The Army of God is not supported by the Vatican. It's just a group of retards that have managed to kill like one guy in a decade.

Terrorism is not a crime? Hmmm......... And, i think a death threat and promoting a terrorist attack on civilians is categorized as illegal if you do it in the US.

And again you make it as a "no biggie" issue. So if tomorrow a plane crashes into the building that has Comedy Central HQ, it was no biggie in the first place, right? What you're basically saying is that, ..........let's say 9/11 never happened, and South Park studio was located in the WTC. With those people releasing a threat, and encouraging that they should die in the name of Allah.... you'd say exactly what you said now. No big deal! Pffffffttttttttt...........these idiots are everywhere, even from other religions! You can't arrest them for this. It's not a crime to terrorize innocent people's lives. The day after, 9/11 happens.

Good luck explaining that case again to the people that lost their loved ones.

I wouldn't like it, but is well within my employer's rights to do such a thing. It's their newspaper/website/whatever. Not mine.

Freedom of speech goes both ways. South Park can write whatever they want, following the FCC guidelines, and they know/can deal with any public outlash. People that oppose said show can protest against it all they want as well. YOU may not think they are right, but they are just as free to bitch and moan about South Park as South Park has to make fun of them.

Obviously death threats are not protected, but to go through this whole "We're America fuck you if you dont like what I say!" routine is almost hypocritical to what freedom of speech is.
xcheck24
I had a hard time saying it was a death threat per se. It appears as one on the surface, but one could also say it was a prayer to Allah. They're wishing for Allah to kill them and they may burn in hell. Not that they're going to kill anyone themselves. But it also could be viewed as yelling fire in a crowded theater, especially if someone should act and try to kill anyone.

The government needs to create a law where if you, as an American citizen, promote or express support for terrorist activities (even if you don't actually hurt anybody), you are subject to treatment as a terrorist, including arrest and imprisonment. Sometimes draconian measures are what's needed to shock people into behaving. Really? He's pointing out the ridiculousness of the radical muslims because Jesus is being depicted and Comedy Central isn't pulling the show in fear of death threats.

It really does show Comedy Central's hypocrisy though and if I were Matt and Trey I'd be pissed. They greenlight this show, but TWICE censor them in ways they did not wish to be censored because of fear.

Apparently in the eyes of Comedy Central, it's ok to make fun of certain religions, as long as they don't threaten to kill you.
SorryaboutthatWhoa
The more I think about it, the more it infuriates me. One of the reasons why South Park is so funny is because it targets EVERYONE. No on is free from ridicule. The difference now between South Park and Comedy Central is that Comedy Central has drawn the line on what is ok to poke fun at, and what isn't.

Now that they refuse to allow Matt and Trey to poke fun at the absurdity of the viewpoints of a certain minority of Muslims, but allow entire tv shows about a catholic religious figure, they have opened the door for ridicule and don't really have a defense if catholics and other religions start calling them out and boycotting them for being biased.

I'm a Catholic, I have a good sense of humor, and movies, tv shows, etc etc etc don't bother me. Comedy Central saying poking fun at one religion is ok and not another absolutely DOES bother me.

Me too, and precisely for the reasons you mentioned. I don't care about the mocking of Catholic/Christian religion in the least, and the literal interpretation of the religion is absolute ridiculous and deserves to be mocked. But to do it in the wake of recent news mocks of hypocrisy. Either they censored South Park out of respect for the Islamic religion, in which case it's insulting that they'd somehow find it okay to disrespect any other religion. Or they censored South Park out of fear, which makes them both cowardly AND disrespectful for somehow thinking that Christians might be a better sport about things. I don't care how you mock my religion. You can shoot a "Two girls, One Jesus" poop video and I wouldn't be offended. But don't mock my religion simply because you think you can get away with it.*

* I guarantee that the response to this will be "But we're not mocking the religion, we're showing Jesus is a very positive light and fictionalizing the very struggles he likely dealt with in his own maturity toward messiahdom." No, you aren't. You're satarizing the religion, you goons. And to take it further, this is the type of useless and unfunny shit that empowers tools like Glenn Beck. So just stop it and focus your attention on something people might actually want to watch, like bringing back The Dave Chappel Show.
